ok thanks NinjaKix, do you use matrix metering for the background? then -1 / -2 ev (i normally just use -1ev)
ive been using a Godox es600 for outside stuff, but having to use a variable ND filter to stay under the 1/200 shutter sync rules out using the meter for the strobe.
this leaves me metering the strobe power by whats on the tiny screen & the histogram (not ideal)
do you use high speed sync for overpowering the sun?
anyway thanks again heres a couple examples of my latest work.. i am pretty happy with:

No HSS, Just use filters and adjust flash metering based on the amount of light stoppage the filter im using at the time applies (If Im using a 3 stop ND filter and shooting at f/1.6 I meter the flash for f/4.5). I wouldn't use a variable ND filter because you never truly know EXACTLY how much light its filtering. You can make a close guess and sometime even get it spot on, but I prefer to know the exact number i need to set flash for.
If I'm reading correctly, it sounds to me like you dont have an actual flash meter. If that's the case, definitely get one. All you do is input the ISO and Shutter speed your camera is set to, put the meter to the subjects face and press the meter button. It'll then tell you the Aperture you should be at for the light from the flash to be properly exposed. Raise or lower flash power until it's at your desired aperture. Perfect exposure 99% of the time.
Your photos look like you are doing a damn good job. Only problem I have w/ them is over saturation in certain parts of the frame. But that's a stylistic decision.

i do have a meter but theres not much point using with the variable ND.. as you pointed out you never know how much light its filtering. I might have to invest in a 3stop ND
anyway thanks again appreciate having someone to bounce ideas off
oh and what other ND do you find uselfull other than 3 stop?

Im thinking wildlife/nature/landscape mainly. I want to get into Night/Star photography but I think its too early for that yet. From what ive gathered that is a bit more money for proper lenses
Any recommendations?

Getting up there in price ($795) but the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 would be a good choice. On crop at the wide end you've got the field of view of a 27mm on FX. Not bad. You can always shoot a quick 2 or 3 shot pano if you need more than that.
The Nikon 20mm 1.8G is a around the same price but obviously won't be as flexible as the zoom.

For landscape and star photography you'll want a wide lens, the wider the better especially since you'll be fighting the 1.5 crop to go wide.
in both cases get the widest aperture you can(lowest f/#). You can probably get a 2.8 for the wide end and down to maybe a 4 or 5.6 on the long end. Vibration Reduction also helps for handheld shots. Shooting night photography you might be better served with a nice prime at f/1.8 depending on the particular application.

The biggest thing is always metering everything. It's easy to get lazy and say "Close Enough" but if you dont have the right balance, it's hard as hell to bring it back in a natural way. I underexpose the background by anywhere between 1-2 stops depending on the scene or mood I'm going for and meter flash at perfect exposure.
I really felt like I turned the corner once I decided to keep it simple. I used to roll out w/ 2 Einsteins and a Speedlight for rimlight, but that **** is so unnecessary and just leads to overthinking EVERYTHING. Just one light in a complimentary position to the sun and a reflector is all you need.

Anyone looking to make a trip to the Detroit area anytime soon? I am looking for people to shoot with because I moved there and dont know many people. I know some cool spots.
I apologize for not posting as much as I planned on. School finals were getting in the way as well as shooting some city work.

I have been trying to get some rooftop access to get some night shots of Detroit. One spot (which yields amazing results) is the Book Tower. The building is closed because they are doing some maintenance work to remove the lead and asbestos and whatever else is found to be potentially harmful.
I went to the company who owns the Book Tower, and the lady was a total jerk. She told me it won't happen in a snarky response.
What did I tell her after that? I told her to check out Instagram with the hashtag #BookTower and she will find my view

Flickr search for Samyang 14mm: https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=...4mm&advanced=1 You can see there's lots of great milky way shots, as well as landscapes/nature stuff - though it might be a little wide depending on what you want to shoot.
For wildlife you will need a zoom (most likely) it's pretty hard to get up close and personal with most wildlife. Something ~200-300 on the long end should be fine but I'm mostly a canon shooter so I don't know much about Nikon lenses.

Move things around, move lights, move the item, change the angles.
If you have a polarizing filter you can cut down on the reflections.

Alright fellas, think I finally found the one: Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM. Its on Adorama for $399 and found it on eBay for $295.99
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sigma-17-50m...gAAOSw2XFUkHW0
I plan on just getting this one for now, seems like a good general purpose lens until i decide to get a zoom for better wildlife photography (and while I just learn the basics of photography)
Do you fellas think I should buy it on ebay or adorama? Anyone have experience with this lens? Putting it on my d7100
