I just fear this will be another Cartier Santos situation where I kind of fawn over it in photos, but when i get it on wrist it looks potato. The medium santos looks nice, but the large size just looks obnoxious, and sadly that's the only size the blue dial comes in.

Random question for you dudes. Apparently my grandmother has a Vacheron Constantin watch that was a gift from some French steel industry execs who were trying to buy a patent off my grandfather. Probably from the 60's and looks like jewelry, but a gold flower opens to a mechanical watch.

–> WTF do we do with this thing? Get it appraised (how/where)? I can't find anything like it on the interwebz….

Will try and get some pictures….

Anything with that octagonal design just screams it to me. More so than bracelet.

Was there something that triggered this? From what I've read back before 2018 it was pretty easy to get ahold of these models? Seems like there's a resurgence in people wanting watches for some reason. Not sure if it's more people wanting them, or if it's just limiting the supply. Or both.

It started off here in the UK around 2016/2017, things like Rolex GMTs and Subs started to get more difficult to find at ADs. I think just in general wristwatches got a lot more popular thanks to the likes of Instagram. Once people started to have to wait a few months for a watch it pushed them towards buying from grey dealers for a small markup, which in turn pushed grey dealers to obtain more watches at retail and it’s a vicious circle with more and more models becoming harder to source as people are pushed towards in stock less desirable models.
All this combined with the nature of people wanting things that they can’t have and you have the crazy market of today

If the dial and movement are decent, could be worth a good chunk. Whether or not you'd want to sell it, would be sweet to get some background and understand an insurance value etc

Nobody in the family knew my grandma had it cause she never wore it - so there isn't any real sentimental value. Nobody thought it was worth much until I saw it and told them what they had. My guess is it will get sold if we can figure out the best outlet or WTF this thing is.

I've seen the dial - it has no flaws. pretty sure its sat in a box since the 60's. Not sure about the movement….didn't want to wind it.

The Breitling is a gorgeous piece, but it’s fuarkin massive (wrist genetics of piss)
That omega is my dream watch, I hope to have one coming to me January/feb. I want it on a leather strap but dam it looks good with a blue one

Yeah that's cool stuff man. There must be a model / movement number on it somewhere that would help with identification but might need to open the back or something

correct - I couldn't find any identifying info on the caseback or dial.

My honest opinion-have it appraised, insured, serviced, and then hold on to it. It should only be used when a family member wants to wear it for a special occasion. Family heirlooms are in their own category when it comes to value.

Edit: I’m also interested in seeing the dial on this one.

Even if I end up with the JLC, I just can't imagine myself parting ways with the Omega. I hunted it for a long ass time for one in it's condition, and it's been my most complimented watch. I have the SS band, a really cool grey-ish leather band, but fell in love with the blue band and haven't taken it off since lol

anyone know how what to do with something like this?

Did a little searching, and this is the closest I could find. It's a lot more elaborate, and doesn't have the Vacheron association though. OP of this thread might know something as he deals in vintage watches.

It seemed like when the ceramic Daytona came out, the hype was so insane that it tricked down to some of the other models. That's early 2016, deliveries started mid-late 2016. It seemed to snowball up until late 2017 or so when all of the sudden everything started disappearing. SS is the cheapest, which makes it the most in demand, which in turn raises its status since its hardest to get. Sort of like "anybody can walk in and buy a gold one, but you have to be special to get a SS." Backwards logic, yet it somehow makes sense. Add to that the instagram hype, and the Chinese buying up anything and everything, and I think that's how we got here. My best guess anyway.

thanks for looking - that website says they do free appraisals, may shoot the pics over to them.

EDIT: Well it looks like the box is worth $500, so that's encouraging….

This. The AD that sourced my AK shoed me a pic from 2016-ish. Every GMT in the case plus most sub color combinations. Exp 1 in view as well.

When i got my AK it was 4 months to get in. And when i came down to VA and started talking to the AD here, he said they hadn't seen one in months. And had a couple people interested because it all trickles to other product lines.

A little history I came across by a poster in another forum:

“Commencing in 1937, Longines-Wittnauer became the distributor for both Vacheron & Constantin and LeCoultre in America (FWIW, LeCoultre was the American-market brand for Jaeger-LeCoultre up to 1970, while JLC was used in the ROW). This was a distribution and marketing arrangement only for Longines-Wittnauer. To comply with existing US tariff laws, importers were required to mark all their Swiss ebauches with an assigned identifying code. L-W's code for both LeCoultre and Vacheron & Constantin was VXN and it appeared on movements imported to the US up until 1965. For a brief time L-W tried joint marketing, using both brand names together on their ads, literature, and boxes.“
