Bought a Canon Rebel 5i a couple of days ago. It was one of the package deals on Amazon. It's my first time having a DSLR camera. So far having a blast with it. Bundle included several lenses.

Alright, so now i was looking more into a specific lens for astrophotography to go along with my Sigma 17-50. Schlangemann earlier recommended a Samyang 14mm and I have found the Tokina AT-X Pro 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II. To me both look very good for astro and landscape and are similarly priced. Any reccs? Appreciate all the help by the way fellas

Yooooo! I use to be pretty active in this forum a few years ago, I have been taking my photography a little more seriously lately and have been looking for a place to get some constructive criticism and some healthy photography discussion and I thought what better of a place to return to then the Photography Crew.

I am looking at getting a nikon D750. The only thing really holding me back is reading some recent reviews that say that "shutter shock" is a big problem with this camera. Has anyone heard this or have any thoughts on the D750 in general?

People will always find something to complain about and steer others away just because they've been unlucky. It's not going to stop you from taking amazing images. Shutter shock is an integral part of the process of taking a picture with a DSLR. Each user will have their own experiences and in the end part of it is knowing your tool, what it can do, what it can't - and working around it or using it to your advantage.

I know people that have dropped their D800s for the D750.

Exactly. Just look at the images being captured with these cameras and then decide how long you plan to avoid buying one because a few pixel peepers complained about something on a forum.

For years Canon crippled the 5D's AF and frame rate and Nikon saved higher MP for the $8K D3x. That didn't stop photographers from capturing incredible images with those cameras in spite of the inherent limitations.

Bottom line is get out there, develop your skills, and shoot.

Why is tokina better on dx and samyang better on fx?

Thanks. That's what I figured, I just wanted to make sure. It's amazing how many people spend so much time on the internet complaining about little details about cameras that most people will never notice. Meanwhile these same people probably couldn't take a nice picture if their lives depended on it.

Just received some metal prints from Adorama I picked up over their cyber weekend sale in November and decided to do a youtube review. Always wanted to get into youtube but never have anything to talk about so figured i could try this lol.

Hoping this convinces people to print their work since I haven't for years and just kept everything on my pc. Lately I've been printing a lot and I find a different type of enjoyment when I look at the printed vs. on screen photos.

Anyway let me know if I left any questions unanswered or if you would have done anything differently…trying to absorb any and all constructive criticism. I have ordered a sample wedding album which I'll be able to show potential clients so I'm thinking of reviewing that too.

It's all about knowing the tool. I'm sure there's something we all own that we've had for ages, and while it's "outdated" or "old" we keep it around because we know the feel of it, imprinted in our bodies. Like a blacksmith keeping an old hammer. Hell, I know a rather prominent illustrator that still use Photoshop 3. I remember someone mentioning in this thread series that they knew some people in the Royal Photographic Society and they were taking amazing shots with some ruddy old bridge camera.

ISO12800 on the 5D3 always amazes me with how usable it is. Lit by a single dim street lamp here.

Wondering if you would be interested in doing a tutorial on your pre printing workflow?

I ordered two metal prints from Bayphoto, They were beautifully done, tack sharp but they came out way darker then I was expecting or what I saw on the screen. These are the first two prints I've ever ordered and now i'm reluctant to order more (specially since getting them up to Canada was expensive) before I know exactly how to get my prints to turn out exactly how I am seeing them on the screen.

I should mention I have zero experience with printing period, not just metal prints.

Any advice would be appreciated.

same here honestly. This was the first time i ever ordered prints so i didnt know what to expect. Hoped for the best with the color calibrated monitors that i have. I printed these same photos on a Canon printer we have at work as 11x17 and while they came out more grainy than in these metal prints, they were more accurate in terms of color/contrast and that was with default color settings being handled by the printer.

Seems like with bayphoto you had the opposite problem i have which is they are a bit on the brighter side.

I'll consider the pre printing video thanks

Ya, I realize now I should probably get my monitor calibrated before going any further. I guess for me I find printing overwhelling as people talk about having to know the printer profiles and each printer is going to look different etc.

I live in a small town that doesn't offer any printing except walmart so trial and error isn't really a option.

I got myself a colormunki display calibrator and to be honest not only did it take like 6 tries to get it what I think is "right" but in the end the profile i ended up with was basically identical to what I had previously/by default. I think calibrating makes a much larger difference if you print yourself at home and can compare test prints to your current color profile/adjust from there.

In! Had no idea this thread existed - excited to read up!

Are any of you guys writers by chance? I was thinking about investing upwards of $2k in a nice camera and learning photography so that I can create some visual content to complement my articles.

I would mostly be taking pictures of different consumer products and landscapes. So far, I've only researched the Canon 6D, Canon 5D mark iii (would have to buy used), GH4 and Sony A7s.
