Ehhhh yes and no. I don't make 500k a year, though not terribly far from it. Most of us here realize with rolex in particular it's more of a storage of money not a splurge of money.

it's not like just running out and buying a $60,000 new mercedes that's instantly worth $40,000 after you leave the lot. Or buying a $2000 pair of designer sneakers that are worth basically fukall after you wear them a handfull of times. I have a "undesirable" rolex model and I could sell it tomorrow for 90% what i paid for it.

This. It's totally different. Im a car guy but still meh about buying a stupid expensive (to me) new car. Bought my GTI new in 2012 and it's been paid off for years. Nice not having a payment. I make a a modest living (nowhere near 500k) but save a lot, single, etc. and dump all my money in excess into stonks. Dropping 14k between a speedy and air king wasnt much sweat off my sack. Just had a little less in my stonk fund. It's all relative.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I can understand that a bit more for sure. I handle my money like twovalvekid but I'm even less of a car guy.

I was just thinking of how stupid I'd look buying a hyundai tucson for $30,000 (because I'm financially conservative /cheap) and having $15,000 on my wrist rather than buying something a bit more prestigious to drive around. I would put a luxury vehicle higher up the scale than a watch. Or skipping a family vacation to buy a watch. I could just never do it.

@2valvekid, I guess that's why they say never get married huh.

Still enjoy stopping by to live vicariously through you guys.

Been married….had a pretty amicable divorce. I always recommend NOT getting married now until youre late 20s. Get out of college (for example) and in the real world a solid 4-5 years first. But since it was an easy divorce, i got the house in it. I ended up renting it out (for a loss) since about 2011. Actually JUST refinanced, and putting about $900 a month in my pocket on that rental because i got it to 75% LTV, got rid of PMI, and got a ridiculously low interest rate. Plus someone else putting about $600/mo in equity in my pocket too.

For watches, i want a BLNR and DJ41. So what i did was basically keep the Cash for those two in my checking account, plus around 10k for emergencies. The rest, 100% goes right into my TDAmeritrade account. I use personal capital app and have a spreadsheet that tracks my cashflows, so whenever my cash goes over the 2 watches + emergency fund in said spreadsheet, i deposit the excess into TD.

I’m glad the divorce worked out fine in the end and it didn’t end messy!

I do very similar in terms of my watch money, I keep my emergency fund + a buffer incase a new watch or an opportunity arises. The rest goes straight into a few different investments. I’ve personally never lost money on a watch so it definitely allows the total watch budget to snowball slightly.

New house will be next on the cards for me when the right one hits the market so will see how that plays out lol

speaking of a storage of money, what would be a recommendation for a $10k (or lower) price target for a piece that will store/appreciate value? I took a fat L on my breitling, but BigRangs made a very good point that it's worth even less if I never wear it. oof. My Omega has gone up in value (well, from where I bought it), but that ain't going anywhere.

I was looking at this as a poverty version of a Rolex Day Date, but kind of feel silly now that I say it out loud, and am concerned about value:

Spoiler!

Also, as a genetically cursed small wristed *******, I would like to go no bigger than 41mm.

If i didnt have my house rented out and collecting equity, watches would NOT be on the table. Clearing up debt and getting equity started on something should be priority.

1)I wouldnt really say thats a poverty day-date clone. Omega makes good watches (own a speedy myself)
2) If youre looking to hide some money, your best bet in my opinion is to just go start chatting with Rolex ADs NOW and look for the standard "lower end" models. Air King, Explorer I, Explorer II, and i would say an oyster perpetual, but god knows how long that would take. Rolex will hold value, and in most cases increase. Hell, my Air King now is just above MSRP + Tax gray market. Take the tact i do. I flat out told my AD i have more than enough to buy both gray, multiple times over, but thats just so cold to me. If it takes 10 months to get a call, guess what? Thats more money that i save.

With the exception of a handful of watches these days, you're probably always gonna lose money if you ever need to sell. You and I aren't well known sellers, so even though we see listings from guys like Davidsw and think that's how much our watch is worth, we'll realistically probably get 10-20% less than that ourselves. Just look for the best deal on something you actually want to own and enjoy. MSRP on a DJ41 is like getting 30% off on an Omega. You won't lose too much if you need to sell.

Pretty much this. Also if your wrists are as small as you say, you may even be able to get away with DJ36 rather than a 41. If you want a great watch but value retention plays into your decision I would explore the extensive configuration options of the DJ.

I had never done it myself until this year and it really opened my eyes to the versatility of it. Smooth bezel, fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet, oyster bracelet, two tone, stainless steel, stick indices, roman indices. And they don't start really swinging above 10k unless you start doing precious metals or diamond indices. A fluted bezel, oyster bracelet dj41 comes in @ $9600

I realize some of these look potato in the photo, but a simple SS config with a fluted bezel in virtually any dial color is a sight to behold.

Alright need some opinions.

I've had a great year and want to splurge on this watch that I've wanted for a long time but told myself I didn't wanna buy it until something good happens and I can use it as a reward for myself

I loooove this watch, dnt really want the metal bracelet though, I'd rather a blue strap which I think another miscer in here has on the same watch and it looks amazing.

How would I go about getting the strap that I want? I'd be better off going through omega yeah? How much would a blue strap set me back ?

Also opinions on the value of this watch? I've seen it float between $4000-$5500 AUD for a while. I havnt seen it as cheap as the below examples for a long time.

The first option is this one:
This ones $3856AUD with free shipping but it has slight signs of wear as shown in the pictures

https://www.chrono24.com.au/omega/se...id17912387.htm

This ones $4156 +$114AUD for shipping but is in much better condition.

https://www.chrono24.com.au/omega/om...id17663469.htm

Thoughts?

Maybe I should hold out and go for this one in the blue or the white face and grey strap combo. Both are hnnnng

I was getting some food yesterday and I saw a guy with a BLNR jubilee. I normally have to control myself not to say something because most people have no idea what you're talking about if you bring up their watch, but this guy obviously knows something if he was able to get one of them. Regular Sub is a roll of the dice, new BLNR, not so much. So I tell him "hey that's a nice watch." The guy is super nice and says thanks and what's that (Hulk). We start chatting and he's using words like cerachrom so I know he's deep in the rabbit hole. He says he got his BLNR from Geary's, (the boutique on Rodeo Drive), and how great his relationship is with them. This is probably one of the most difficult places to get anything on Earth. Spoke about how we feel about the new OPs etc. Nice to find somebody who doesn't look at you like a fukin retard when you make a comment to them. /dear diary

- Omega AquaTerra is a great watch. Value retention is decent if you get pre-owned or negotiate at least a 20% discount from an AD.

- Strap acquisition is a negligible effort. I would concentrate on getting the dial configuration you want for the price you want and then hunt for your strap preference after.

The fact you said "my rolex" and not a specific model, let alone a reference number tells me several things.

It's likely a hand me down you didn't have to work for. So it wasn't even an aspirational piece for you, and you likely didn't even know what you had.

Since it was a hand me down "that wasn't getting compliments", it was likely an older sub or vintage datejust.

You're perfectly at peace wearing some aliexpress made in china watch, rather than a respectable cheapie such as seiko, casio, or gshock. That means it's likely some costume jewelry looking pos.

Due to the above you're neither a rich snob, or an average joe enthusiast. Thread isn't for you m8.

Edit: Costume jewelry confirmed

Double Edit: My bad, the ethering wasn't called for. Have some reps.

Can confirm. I would go as far to say that 50% of rolex owners not wearing a daytona, GMT, or president have no idea what's on their wrist. I remember mentioning ITT that I was seeing my doctor and saw the fluted bezel poking out from under his shirt cuff and asked "Is that a skydweller or a datejust?" and the motherfuker had to reach for his glasses and read the dial to figure out what model he had. MFer didn't know if he had an annual calendar gmt or just a date complication, i just sat there watching him trying to read the dial like

All this aqua terra and dj41 configuration talk has me eyeing up the DJ41 in stainless steel with rhodium to replace the sundust.

The one criticism i have is that you don't get to enjoy the "sundust" colors in direct sunlight. The dial gets washed out entirely to a very bland silver.

From the above image, you would never guess that the dial has tons of blush/pink hues to it, but that's exactly what it looks like whenever you're outside. You only get the fun sundust hues when you're in restaurant lighting but it's fuking stunning when you do.

Will do a casual visit to my AD and ask if they have any rhodium I can try on. I know I love the blue but I want to save that for the day i'm able to buy the sky dweller. In a perfect world I would be able to keep the sundust for dinner/cocktail nights, and the rhodium as the daily but i can't allow myself to be that reckless yet so I would have to sell the sundust. Oh well, in my ADs eyes that would just mean that I have 24k spend with them instead of 14. Inb4 watch flipper accusations.

idk about 50% although I wouldn't be surprised. There's probably a lot. Especially females. Rolex is a fairly common watch to gift someone as a graduation gift, or wedding gift. So if someones not a big watch guy they probably don't pay it any attention. lol

lmfao i know what you mean. dusty-muted colors are all the rage these days, probably 50% of the reason I was so drawn to it because it goes so well with my wardrobe… and i've always wanted to plow kim and khloe in their prime.

God dam this is hard, my first real watch buy and I'm torn

This one looks amazing, bit more than I wanted to spend but it looks expensive/classy af

Or this beauty for $1000 less minus the cost of getting a nice blue strap

What do you guys think about buying from chrono24 vs a store to save a little bit of money

I think that outside of a vehicle or a home, there are few things more dependent on experiencing in person than watches. My first watch buy was blind, but that was a $1200 Oris. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised with it.

At the bare minimum you should go tire kick an Omega AD to see how you like that rubber strap in person. Those are a love/hate thing you have to see and touch to understand fully. And yes a thousand dollars is a lot depending on who you talk to, but when it comes to luxury purchases you always ALWAYS go with what puts the stupid smile on your face vs saving a few (relatively speaking) bucks. Just my two cents.

I fukking hate this site. Had a nice long post typed up.

1) Go to the AD and look at all the omegas. You should be able to get a discount on any of them pretty close to what you can find on chrono 24 for a *new* watch. Keep the new part in mind.
2) On strap, dont sweat it. Get a steel bracelet and go from there.
3) This is the best AT in my opinon:

4) Will, jakes on you, that doctor bruh was trying to be modest.
5) Would sukk BigRang's friends cawk for the BLNR. Semi srs.

6) Go donate to the barstool fund for small businesses. Regardless of what you think about barstool, this is some awesome chit.

What's the secret sauce? Quite frankly, I'm tired of getting sassy looks form AD's anytime I inquire about a timepiece. God knows wtf they're thinking but their overall body language and facial expressions are "**** off". A new store opened up in a mall near me, I walked in to see what they had. Typical plethora of DJ's. Once again, the guy looked hella sleepy like they all do unless it's the owner working there. My lady recognized him from an older store which shut down. Masks help hide their faces now. All I could notice was the giant mole on his head… The first guy "Charlie" from Bellagio literally began mocking me through text with sarcastic jokes on the first piece I bought from him.

36mm DJ, jubilee bracelet, stainless and 18k gold, green face, diamond bezel…

I always tell them, "I'm not a flipper, just an enthusiast" which brutally true… I agree with not trying to compete in the Vegas market, too rich for my blood. They just happened to have two unique pieces at two separate times that my girl ACTUALLY wanted and had configured online… I mean at least we got some rolex swag with that deal. I walked in and said "that one" right away.

Living in AZ, my brother's hook up is saying California is coming in and scooping up everything… He was two watches in before he got hooked up with a Hulk a few months ago. That was nice.

On a side note, I know this is misc but I agree with slooty sloots being materialistic brain dead sloots… It's so rewarding being with an wifing up a competent classy woman. It's even more rewarding for the both of us (especially me) when she's walking around with my decked out in nice things and nice watches which she earned with her HARD WORK… Sloots with all that **** on them only because they open their legs are easy to spot and they get no respect over here.

All I want is an 18k gold Daytona with a green face… Too bad some ******* named John Mayer ruined this watch for me… If I got one, I'd be wearing that **** to my grave and 6 feet under.

Im not gonna read this fukking war and peace essay on how annoying ADs are if youre not gonna post cliffs.

Just go in. And talk to them. Like fukking people. That's all i do. You cant go in one time, and throw a hissy fit cause they dont suck your cawq and give you a BLNR.

I went to one AD in town when i first moved back to VA and from the get go i could tell they were snobs. So i moved on. The one i talk to now, actually talks, chats, and seems to WANT TO. Every time i go in. And the more i dug, the more i found the other AD in town was chit. When i go, im usually there for 2 hours and have to be like "ok i need to go…"
