2016. Time to get a camera. Most likely going to be doing portrait/architecture, possibly some real estate photography. Also really interested on doing some videography and travel videos.

Anyone got advice on what to cop? Looking to spend around $1000 for the camera and a lense or so to start me off. Have heard good things about the Canon 70D but wondering if there's something similar but cheaper that would be worth getting?

Thanks.

Bit of a confession,

I just started using instragram, I've decided only to post some of my best photos and I gotta admit that some of the filters on there give some of my photos the POP they were missing….I don't know how I feel about this lol.

Are any of you guys writers by chance? I was thinking about investing upwards of $2k in a nice camera and learning photography so that I can create some visual content to complement my articles.

I would mostly be taking pictures of different consumer products and landscapes. So far, I've only researched the Canon 6D, Canon 5D mark iii (would have to buy used), GH4 and Sony A7s.

Thanks.

I would love to be able to do both, but I know I probably can't with a $2k budget!

Here's how I would rank what I'm after in order of importance:

1. (really, really sharp focus to convey detail in the best possible light - I would be writing about features)

2. (maybe landscape wasn't the right term? by that I meant the kind of shots you'd see in national geographic or TIME. so scenic shots, but with a subject in focus, I guess?)

3. (icing on the cake for me - but by no means a deal breaker - would be the video capability to capture what I'm interested in doing for #1 and #2 - so up close on a subject, telling a story, if that makes sense? I would edit in final cut pro x)

Thanks a lot man!

Shots like that are 90% lighting.

You could have $60,000 worth of Phase One gear but without the right light you're not going to be happy with the results.

Look around at what other wedding photographers in your area are charging for the same hours and final product (e.g. disc of edited images, album, etc.) and back yourself to deliver the same results.

If you get a reputation for doing work for peanuts then you'll probably find it difficult to raise your prices later since everyone referred to you will be expecting a similar deal and probably lose interest when they discover you're charging more.

I had someone do some 10 hours of work for me for $400. Product delivered was very good. When a friend asked me about it I told him what he charged but mentioned it was just an introductory offer because the guy was getting his business started. When he quoted him $1600 for the same job, even though it was still a good rate and he had the budget for it, my friend was no longer interested. "F**k that" was his reply to me. Why? He only called him because he knew I got a good deal. If a similar deal wasn't on offer then he wasn't interested.

Unfortunately photography is one of those jobs a lot of people expect done for peanuts, friends or not. If your friend was a lawyer he'd probably still bill you the same rate he charges everyone else for his services but when he asks you to take photos he'll most likely expect it to be free or dirt cheap.

Have you ever shot a wedding before? Seriously consider if you'd be comfortable doing this because there is a LOT of work that goes into it unless it's a small one room ceremony or something. What kind of gear do you have?

Looks like you already got a great eye for it. I particularly like your last shot it would be a great print, it looks like you have already figured out rules of the third.

Your first picture could have been better if it would have been a better time of day, either right before sunrise or right after sunset.

Keep it up!

I asked because the 3 cameras you mentioned are know for their video capabilities (when you use Magic Lantern with the 6D)

You can get an olympus omd-em5ii/panasonic g7 + either 12-40 (35 with panasonic) which would give you the best all-around lens plus you'd still have the money for some manual flashes.

Stills + video right there

I like the idea of the portability of the 13 inch and realize the 15 isnt much larger but I'm looking at the budget too. And, I could always add an external monitor down the road at home if I wanted to.

I do have a GoPro (non 4k) and do very minimal editing of personal home movies and holidays etc.
I was using a 13" mbp and got a 15" in July. difference is night and day, but mainly bc my 13" was from 2010 and my 15" is from May 2015. of course the power, the Retina screen, and the size are incredible to me. i love the 15" size, cant really imagine being on the 13" anymore.

First time out shooting Northern lights, needed a wider lens thats as fast as my 30mm 1.4. Also gotta figure out how reduce noise with out softening the picture so much.

Took a 2 1/2 hour drive to the Salton Sea today. Here's a little background because it's pretty crazy.

"The Salton Sea, California's largest lake by volume, exists entirely by accident.

It was created in the early 1900s after a heavy rain caused the Colorado River to burst through the banks of an irrigation canal, sending millions of gallons of water into a previously dried out lake bed in the California desert.

In the 50s and 60s, it was a booming tourist attraction. Marketed as a "miracle in the desert," it became Palm Springs but with beaches. It would regularly attract over half a million visitors annually.

The sea quickly became something of an ecological nightmare soup. The Salton Sea is surrounded by nearly half a million acres of agricultural land, and water from this land runs off into the sea, taking with it salt and fertilizers and pesticides. By the 70s, the water was becoming too hostile to sustain much of any kind of life, and the shoreline became littered with thousands and thousands of dead fish."

All of the "sand" is actually crushed up fish bones.

My wife talked me into spending the extra and getting the 15". I'm glad she did, it's not too big and I'm happy to have the extra real estate and processing power.

you're right, but in my opinion i think the photo would have a stronger impact if the white balance was altered so as to have overall cooler tones.
I think the yellow tones in the foreground (on the green leafy area) clash with the visible blues of the sky

Haven't posted in awhile because after wedding season got over I needed a break (and last semester kicked my ass)

But the aurora was out the other night so I went out quickly and snapped a few (it was like 5 degrees out)
