Anything that can reliably go through and through is good enough, shot placement and capacity is what matters. 22lr is obviously not recommended due to magnitudes smaller muzzle energy and likelihood of missing CNS due to ricocheting or curving off trajectory by tumbling after impact. Bigger bullet is certainly better for hunting since the bear will bleed out faster, but for defense, you're dead if you only hit a charging bear in the lungs, so it doesn't really matter unless it's a cannon.

but i would imagine that having a bear charge at you would be stressful and you could easily miss with a pistol. something like a semi auto rifle would probably work better

I’d rather have 17 rounds of 9mm then 6 44 mag tho

If you're out hiking or backpacking and need to defend against a bear, you probably aren't going to have time to empty the magazine

Well, Farles . . . I finally got some karma payback on someone shipping me more than I ordered by mistake. It wasn't N95 masks, though. I had ordered and paid for a 3/4" ball valve for a plumbing project (qty 1) and the supply house sent me the box of 10 that was the added option (about $120 more than I ordered).
So, I guess that's great . . . although not sure what I'll ever do with 9 spare 3/4" ball valves. LOL.

So, I've got a line on some defensive ammo. Can basically as much 147g Ranger T ammo as I want for 45 cents per round. I don't even know if it's decent ammo, and normally I'd never carry 147g. But for that price in this market, I'm tempted to just buy a couple thousand rounds.
