Been spending some more time looking at the two watches I want to buy.
This one I can get for MSRP, wouldn't mind paying that. I like this more than the plain blue dial one, and also because I'm more interested in a blue dial skydweller, below, with a blue strap.
Problem is, this one is apparently $10k above MSRP because they're hard to find.. can't fukkin believe it. I do really want a blue dial watch though.
I had really thought about either a black or black/gold with black strap submariner, but the black one just looks bland. Not sure about the black/gold with black strap, I think that looks nice and relatively understated.

Daytona with the black face is also very nice

I'd probably never sell my black/gold sub on black strap, because it's my first luxury watch and has sentimental value behind it. But my next one's gonna be an all stainless sports model.
One thing I've noticed is the two tones look much better in person than they do in pictures.
If I was gonna spend up to 25k on a Rolex it'd be between Daytona, Hulk, and BLNR because I'm a basic bitch.

I think two tone looks amazing in person. Gold is shiny and grabs attention (srs) even on a small watch like a sub or daytona, the color combo is simply eye grabbing
For the times I don't want to wear gold and be more understated, I feel like the AP ROO Diver would be perfect srs, I wish I could see one in person but they look beautiful in videos.

TugOfPeace, you can get a GMT Master Pepsi for roughly the same price as a black stainless steel Sub. Jubilee bracelet, black face, pepsi bezel looks awesome. The one on the left is $11-12k iirc

I looked it up and it has a Breitling 10 movement, which is an ETA 2892.

What do you guys think of this? I want one blue dial watch and since the skydweller is pretty much $10-12k over retail, thought this looked nice. Only thing is I don't know how it retains value relative to something like a Rolex. $18.5k.
For blue dial watches one of my favorites is the Nomos Worldtimer nachtblue it can be had for only $4k and is stunning

I've already decided on an everrose sundust DJ41 and figured it would be a waste to get a blue dDJ41 in the same model. I'm trying to build a diverse (no liberal) collection that retains value. What do you not like about the Blancpain I posted?
If I were to nitpick it I would say to remove roman numerals and I'm not too sure about expression of the eyes/mouth on the moon.
Edit: Ehh if I really like the skydweller and I know I could get it one day.. may end up just getting it now. Just feels stupid to pay so much over MSRP. Do people commonly do that?

How about a blue dial Glashutte Original Panoramic Lunar? I've been eyeing the green dial one
That blancpain wont retain its value either, if its 18.5k I bet you can get one for $8k. Also if you are going to spend 18k you could probably also get a blue dial Vacheron Constantin Overseas unless the price has jumped up recently

I had the Leman Grande Date a long time ago (non-Aqua Lung). Bought it and sold it without ever wearing it. Beautiful watch, but I preferred the Aqua Lung but couldn't get a similar unbeatable deal.

I need to find out if the Nomos Worldtimer blue face is the same tone as the Nomos Orion blue. My wife bought me a Nomos Orion last year and I wouldn't want to get the same color in the Worldtimer. The white one with the subdials does pop a little more so maybe I'll get that one.

Called a rolex dealer just now and they said they usually only get one per year. Is it possible that they will eventually manufacture them more which would drive the price down resulting in a loss if I pay so much over MSRP?

Having owned the watch now for 3 months, I still really enjoy it. The one annoying this is 80% of the time you don't get to experience the "sundust" color at all. The vast majority of the time, the dial just looks like the neutered-meh silver dials, like this:
The blush-sundust color only really comes out in restaurant, elevator, yellow lighting but it is a treat. I was like you where i loved the sky dweller, particularly since i was doing international travel twice a year pre-covid. Paired with the blue, i thought it to be a grail. The more i've asked about them, and the more i've heard stories on line… just absolutely abandon the thought of getting one at msrp unless you have a quarter million dollars of purchase history at your AD.
So for me personally, i've slowly felt my desire for the blnr dieout the more i realize the skydweller is within grasp. So my situation now is that i'm currently waiting for my AD to get DJ41 in blue dial again but this time with the blue dial and fluted bezel. I would then sell my Sundust, and my next watch would be the sky dweller with black dial. Retail is $15,000 but grey market premium is only $5000 instead of the more egregious $10,000 for blue dial. Plus if i think about it, if i had sky dweller WITH the blue dial too? I'd never wear any other piece.
So blue DJ41 fluted jubilee, and black Sky-Dweller, and green aqua terra as the beater is what i'm thinking my collection will be by the time 2021 wraps up. But we'll see. As to the bolded, you sound a little too concerned about after market pricing. If you got it, you got it. Prices go up, they also go down.

Most people donโt really care if the price goes down abit, because most people have no intention of ever selling.
If you pay grey market pricing youโre probably gonna lose a lot if you decide to sell. I was offered 10k by crown and caliber for my black 2 tone with box and papers excellent condition 2018 model. They would have listed it for 13-14k probably.
Itโs possible you can get more selling it yourself and not thru someone else. But thereโs a lot more risks involved. And god forbid you ever accidentally knick your watch and scratch it up, that's probably a couple thousand dollars off right there. Basically watches aren't a great investment and you shouldn't view them as such.
as far as if one day they will start producing more which would drive the price down. I sure hope so, but obviously their business model is working for them or they wouldn't continue limiting supply.

Interesting. Would you rather buy the skydweller on the greymarket at MSRP, or used? Kind of tricky in this situation; if it was being sold at retail I would definitely pay retail, but given the fact that it's so far above MSRP and it will drop in value once I start wearing it, I'm torn on that. Seems I would take less of a hit buying it preowned. But then again, spending that much money on a preowned watch seems criminal.. may as well buy new if I'm planning to own it a long time.
And the price of a used skydweller online probably isn't gonna be much different than buying an unworn one. Still gonna be well above MSRP. I don't mind buying used as long as it's in excellent condition with box and papers. Of course if possible an unworn one would be ideal.

Question: Iโm torn on what Rolex to buy. I have always loved the date just. However, the idea of getting an explorer to match my grandfathers original explorer seems like a really cool thing to do and would be something cool to show my kids and their grandkids one day. What would the mwc do?
Not an imminent plan as were working on some other financial goals first, but itโs something I think about.

First Rolex boyos, DJ41 in everose gold + sundust dial (keep in mind, I have a 6.17" wrist lmao):
$13,550 + tax, bought from an official dealer. Wasn't aware that paying with cash could potentially yield a small discount. In hindsight, I find that hard to believe in the current market since these watches get scooped up so quickly.
Also kind of regret not buying from a place like WatchguyNYC.. could've gotten it for $13,800 no tax if I did a wire transfer, but then I believe that's not an AD
Edit: I found a tiny scratch on the bottom of the clasp. Worth making a fuss over?
