Also got some pics from the VC/ALS/Glashutte catalogue up on the walls but the JLC ones just work better since it has the same composition with the black background. Might take the technical pages from ALS though.

When buying used, buy both the watch and the seller. On high $$ transactions you might want to roll by an AD with the watch to get a second opinion.

even if you yourself dont believe they have any REAL value you would still pay less for a watch if it didnt come with box and papers, if you had a choice of 2 watches in the exact same condition/year/location/distance/color and both were the same price
yea it doesnt guarantee anything but it still affects the value of a watch

in some cases the box and papers, or absence of, should be a red flag. i got a story i really want to share. ill edit this post once i get home
edit:a few things to consider about papers.
- everybody generally knows that you are supposed to keep your box and papers. the more expensive the watch, the more likely the owner is to keep his box and papers. this should be kept in mind when purchasing an expensive timepiece. if you are looking at a 30k watch and the owner doesnt have box and papers, wouldnt you agree that something is fishy? unless you are looking at a 2nd hand watch from a "trusted seller" and the piece was purchased from the original owner who happened to be a tourist (and therefore wouldnt have his box papers). either way id try to avoid it
- when i was visiting *****, the AP boutique told me (straight from the horses mouth) that they sell dials and will offer to redial your watch to any color you choose. also all color dials are the same price. why is this significant? well AP generally has 3 staple colors for the royal oak. white, black, blue and each has its own unique reference number. black is 01, white is 02, blue is 03 for the royal oak chrono. blue is only available through boutiques as AD's are not allowed to sell blue dial royal oaks. blue also has a market value 2-3k USD higher than white or black. the retail is the same but blue dials are given small discounts compared to white and black. the box and papers would reflect whether the watch was originally a black white or boutique blue dial. so if you ever bought a blue dial ROC and it didnt have box and papers….kind of fishy….
the boutique also disclosed to me that this was the most common way people obtained the blue dial. straight from the horses mouth

Just got this beauty back from my watchmaker, a 1914 solid silver Omega trench/officers watch.
More pics: http://imgur.com/a/ky6Vq
Buying background
I bought this watch a couple of months ago, it was in pretty poor condition; It didn't work, the crown and stem were missing, and the hinge of the back plate was broken, but the dial, hands and case looked to be well-preserved so it looked like a promising project… and it was!
The service
Now it's back from a session at my watchmaker's place. He completely overhauled the mouvement (a good start), turned a new stem from scratch - which he also blued for the fun of it -, made a new pinion for the hinge, and made new silver plugs as well for the ends of the hinge. To finish it all off, he left the pristine dial untouched, but reblued and relumed the hands. I knew this watch could be pretty, but now it's hard to take my eyes off it.
The history of the watch
It's a gorgeous solid silver trench/officers watch from ca 1914, so from around the start of WWI. That's not the only cool thing about this watch, because if you open up the back lid, you see Depos N 9846, which is French for "Registered Design". That's the first known actual wrist watch design, with wire lugs, dating back to 1903. I've got (and had) cushion case Omega wristwatches that are older than this one, but they didn't carry the Depos (since it's a different style than the actual registered design).
The watch itself
So in short, the watch has a ton going for it; it's very well-preserved: everything is original (apart from the crown), the dial is pristine (while most porcelain dials from that era are cracked or chipped), the hands are also original (usually it's pick one; either the hands or the dial will be intact), and the new lume has a pleasant glow to it. The 24h dial is rather rare, and also more suitable for use in the military (given the materials, that would be by a higher ranked/officer). It's got a very high grade movement as well, in beautiful condition too, keeping perfect time, and the dimensions are also very, very cool; 35,5mm diameter without crown, and 44,5mm lug to lug.
All in all, I'm very happy with the watch, the only downside is that I don't have any 12mm nato's (yet), so I whipped on a super sexy 6mm ladies nato for the wrist pic. Those who are acquainted with my Instagram know that isn't really an exception for me though…
The second watch in the pictures is also a trench watch, this one from the end of WWI (ca 1918-1919), in steel with flexible lugs and some very cool lume.

New announcement from Hodinkee: Comicon for watch collectors.
They started well with their announcement then it just went down the drain asap.
These guys are delusional, they are getting filthy rich but gotdamn they are delusional. Even coming from the guys who claimed their average reader nets 200K USD per year this is just ludicrous.

The HODINKEE Collectors Summit is all about discretion, and a mutual respect between collectors. As such, what goes on at HCS will remain amongst attendees. No press will be allowed inside, no guests, and we ourselves will
not even be recording most presentations.
The goal here again is to encourage the most honest and open feedback
for true collectors only.
The ticket price is $3,500 per person.
And consider this:
for less than half the price of a decent matte-dial Sub
, you will be getting invaluable information and access to some of the most knowledgeable minds in the watch collecting world.

Limit available quantity, make it secretive and undocumented, knock the price up so that it's one of those out-of-reach-for-lay-people events and youre guaranteed to sell out every last ticket. you're absolutely right. And if the average reader is making 200k, though that's plenty money, I don't think it's enough pocket change to throw away 3,500 on one night. which leaves only top tier readers.

So my Hamilton and Seiko quartz watches have both died (not the battery). Only a few years old. Meanwhile the Armani watch I have had for 2-3 times as long is still ticking away. Paid about the same for each of these.

I am getting a free quote to repair the Hamilton (probably around $100usd, watch sells for about $370 on amazon). The Seiko is a solar chronograph, don't think it will be worth the repair cost associated with that.

My dad bought the Apple Watch for his cousin's husband and chit came out to $1200 with tax. strong wtf…. They live in Bulgaria where they can't get it as it's only sold in the States and UK so that's why, but I really don't see the appeal of it. What a waste of money.
