never owned a rolex before, but went to two local ADs a few weeks ago. first one basically laughed at me without laughing, said that they don't have any availability and didn't even offer to put me on the waitlist.
second AD was super nice, sat me down and asked me what watches i was interested in and gave me a rolex book and his card. i'm on the waitlist for an OP36 and explorer 36 (depending on what is ready first) but he said it could take up to a year lmao…oh well

Sent out an email to my AD inquiring what the lead times are on the 126715. Asked her if it's closer to a 3 month or 6 month wait. I'm hoping all the hype of high networth dudes is still concentrated around the sky-dwellers and day-date configurations. This watch is pure sex and i need it in my life.
But the reality of the situation is, no one spends over $1,000 on a watch without some ego involved. So if you have $6,000 to $20,000 to spend on a watch, you want your ego scratched. And the aforementioned brands just don't do that. So you first have to scratch the Rolex itch which could be 1 watch or 4. Given the scarcity, it could take a decade or longer to get the Rolexs you want.
Yes you could snag a glashutte or blancpain in the interim but as someone who was schitting on Rolex hype for a long time. It's one thing to type it, it's another thing to be standing in an AD with your card out ready to sign away $8,000 for a watch nobody is going to recognize by you.
They know they have 100 buyers for their 3 BLNRs, and a thousand buyers for the Tiffany OP. The trick is getting them sold to the client that has a wife/bae they'll also come in and get an engagement ring, random jewelry, or an undesirable datejust 36 for.
After my AD realized i wasn't a tire kicker or flipper, when i came to pick up my DJ41… man they were bringing out all kindz of schit fromt he back i thought i'd never see. precious metal sky-dwellers, a daytona, and that 126715 which i had never even seen before and it was actually that moment when i realized it was my grail. That rose gold high polished center links, brushed edges, against the vintage-ish black/brown bezel hits fuking different in person.

The full rose gold GMT or Root beer is hnnnng. I'd still love a BLNR in jubilee over it. Actually got on TRF and watch recon this morning to look at prices and just lol'd at how they keep creeping up. The DJ41 combo i want (blue, baton, jubilee, fluted) still is actually about what i could get it for after tax. Makes me wonder if it's worth it to start a relationship with the other AD in town. But theyre super full of themselves from what i hear.

Question for you guys. If you're a rolex owner what kind of car do you drive? Do you care about how it looks driving something cheap despite having/wearing a rolex?
Cars that are well-engineered, reliable, hold their value, and fun to drive are the goal IMO. I am not a huge fan of the idea of buying a new car and then paying the depreciation on it. I just like putting my money into things that will hold onto their value (G63 AMG would be my ideal DD for this reason, but the Raptor is basically a poverty version of the G Wagen for me)

Im saying this as a car guy (other car is a 2002 vette i've dumped way too much money on and it's ridiculous), but cars do absolutely nothing for me and ive noticed most people who actually have a little scratch arent impressed by cars anyway. It is absolutely the WORST investment you can make.

I have the vette if i really want to have fun, but the GTI is still a fun little go cart to drive daily and ive had it almost 10 years. So why go out and spend money on another vehicle. Thats $$$ i can put towards a vacation, new stuff for the house, going out regularly, etc. Do i WANT to buy an RS-5? Yes. Can i afford one. Yes. But…it's just dumb to me right now. I still have fun with the GTI and it needs minor repairs here and there.
You dont feel any sense of incongruence owning watches that are probably a substantial or greater intrinsic value than your car though?.
Smart financial decisions are what allow you to really be able to afford the nicer luxuries in life. You can get into a VERY expensive vehicle with little capital to your name and actually buttfuk yourself in doing so. Not buying a "new" car as at least put 25k in my pocket over the last 4.5 years, let alone NOT buying a new one and taking on 50-75k in debt. If you think you can afford the 56K audi, my general MO is buy the next size down from what you think you can squeeze.
I remember chris rock making the joke back in the day about driving a camry. "You know what the difference between me and jay z is? He's got his ferrari, and i got 200k in my pocket"

That Ford Raptor or amg c63s are what I’d like if the car market wasn’t so fkd right now. Hell a c43 is selling at the same cost of a new c63s a year or two ago.
But no I don’t care what people think. Some of the richest people around where I live drive beater cars when they could afford whatever they wanted. But I’m a car guy so I’d prefer to have something a bit nicer.

Thats my only gripe. I placed an order for an audi @ $56k but am thinking if I got something for $20k it wouldn't feel right, being an owner of a few rolexes. Not like I flaunt things but it feels off. Like wearing an expensive suit but pairing it with cheap shoes.

They are totally different assets. In 2012 I bought a used submariner for $6500 and an f150 for $48k. Sold them both this year for $10k each.

that's interesting though, because i didn't even know it existed until my AD brought it from "the back" when i picked up my DJ. I was floored. I thought the "rootbeer" only came in the two-tone variation which i happen to think is lightly to moderately fugly. The full rose gold piece though… it's a sight to behold.

All of this. I don't even have a car right now. Work from home, live in the heart of a major city, and i'm not currently traveling. Most stuff is walking distance and spend about $500 a month on ubers. Parking alone is $375 a month in my building, add gas, insurance, mechanical schit. Yah i'm sweet until i start that family life.

Then there's the entirely different asset point. I barely look at these watches as an expense. I think of it illiquid cash basically, especially when you realize the appreciation on most rolexes now out-earn any savings account you'd keep the money tied up in. That is assuming of course you don't wear your watches like Enforcerbrah lol.

How long have Rolexes been appreciating? It seems like a fad to me, I'm old enough to remember Rolex wasn't chit and even Omega was viewed as a more of a man's watch than Rolex.
With today's tiktok generation and the shortest attention spam in human history is Rolex one fad away from going back to irrelevancy?

To answer your question though, steel sport Rolexes have always gone up in value. Between extreme luxury status and regular price increases over the years, they simply hold their value or go up. Combine that with the fact that they look just like the same watch from 40 years ago, there is a high demand for older models that people can possibly save a few bucks on. It's not like buying a 20 year old car that is unreliable and looks completely outdated compared to a current model.
As for the current madness, it started around late 2017 when SS sport models started disappearing from the cases. And one thing leads to another and now there is absolutely nothing left.

I don't have a full set of data to respond to the bolded point in your post, but I do not believe that is true. I believe it is only in the past decade that Omega has encroached on Rolex's market share (and that is globally - mostly driven by Asia - the US is still far more Rolex-oriented compared to Omega and it has been that way for many decades)
You'd be pretty surprised by the business model of Rolex and how genius it is in regards to maintaining brand value. Rolex does not think about business strategy several years down the road - they are thinking decades and centuries down the road, how can they preserve and maximize their brand value. Rolex definitely is not "one fad away" from irrelevance, but I do think the trend of social media has drawn more eyes and attention onto luxury goods, and Rolex is the #1 most recognized luxury brand in the world, so that helps increase demand. But this behavior has been taking place for a LONG time and there is a lot of industry history that you can read on the subject. The Rolex story is taught in MBA schools because there is so much to unravel and learn from in terms of strategy and marketing - it is not a fad.

Rose gold is the only "colored" (inb4 rasis) gold from rolex i like. It's very understated and muted. Yellow gold is like…..LOOK AT ME IM COLUMBIAN DRUG CARTEL….
And youre statement about liquid cash is spot on. Hell even my Air King right now. It's scratched up to all hell and i love it. I could get it polished, and probably unload it for at least what i purchased it for in…2019.

How long have Rolexes been appreciating? It seems like a fad to me, I'm old enough to remember Rolex wasn't chit and even Omega was viewed as a more of a man's watch than Rolex.
With today's tiktok generation and the shortest attention spam in human history is Rolex one fad away from going back to irrelevancy?

the only yellow-gold rolex offering i like is the two-tone datejust with the black dial. The stark contrast between the black and yellow is pretty sick. when i'm mid 40s and have 5 or more watches in my collection. I might circle back and get this one, if for nothing more than datenights in miami with the lady. Miami is good for that, no amount of tacky or gaudiness can draw attention to you because its par for the course down there lol.

honestly, it may be the explorer 36 given how hot the OPs have been flying off the shelves. If i was a skinny dude, i'd definitely be interested in the explorer 36.
