Been there dude. And not much you can do writing off hours for a for-profit. I find it best to put family and friends through the same process that I use for regular clients. I let them know up front that they will save money, but nothing is free.

I ensure requirements are fully defined and display both actual prices and their price and send them the quote. They'll get a set amount of enhancements or feature requests after launch, after that, it's full price for support.

I don't think people inherently set out to get something for free from friends or family, but if the opportunity is there, they'll exploit it. I just think it's important to put a dollar amount to your time and skills for family and friends. That's tangible to them and I find they respect it. That's really hard to do for a people-pleaser like myself

So I come back into the house after smashing Bi's, 'Tri's and some light shoulders last night
Walk into the master bedroom where my wife is watching tv and patiently waiting for me to finish up my workout…
she turns to me and says "You're on the verge of being too wide". Keep in mind I'm nice and pumped. She said your shoulder are getting too big and it's starting to look weird.

…I smiled and said "that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me"
then showered and smashed hard like a boss…didn't hear her complaining then

Lake was nice, paid for an hour with a kayak for me and an hour for a paddleboard for Jr. She Bando. Got a little shoulder cardio and sun then decided to drink on shore while my kid paddleboarded some more. Went to pay for the extra time with the paddleboard and the lady wouldn't take the money, which was just enough for dinner for the 2 of us.
