Lol right? Almost like grey dealers stretched the prices too far, and now are dropping the prices 5% and claiming its the TIME TO BUY. The hulks are the worst

I've been looking at hulks and they're just stupid expensive. I'd really love to find a starbucks submariner, but they still seem to be like $17k.

The sad part about all this, one of the channels (i think watchfinder?) was talking about how many actual units Rolex supposedly produces in a year. And when you compare it to other large "luxury" watch manufacturers, it's not that far off. Which makes all this stuff pretty nuts.

~$31 Trillion printed globally in the last 2 years. There's lots of $$ floating around out there.

Yup. Definitely is. They could easily double the amount they put out and sell it all, would just mean a 10.5K BLNR might sell for 12K on the grey instead of 22.

I think they gave the numbers from Omega and Rolex in the number of units sold, and they were not that far off. Crazy to see the $$ difference in grey though.

just wait or make a cash offer and you'll see how much the market has dropped.

the spread between bid and ask prices are very high right now; you'll be lucky to get a cash offer of 60% of the list price from dealers if you were looking to sell.

Is the market actually coming down now?

Does anyone follow A. Lange & Sohne prices? Had they ripped with the overall market or what are they doing

Back in January, I was trying desperately hard to buy as many subs and gmt's as possible, only to not find a single one in CA. I called hundreds of stores, reaching out of state, and struck out. What's interesting is that other states would comment on my area code and straight up say that Rolex doesn't permit non-locals to purchase… Started in 2021.

Anyways, I had an interesting conversation with a dealer who said for the past 6 months he has received a minimum of 100 calls every single day asking about Rolex availability. And then said "There are a lot of people who either made good money recently or already have money, and they want to protect it. Investors and money savvy people know how certain watches maintain value and/or appreciate, and are scooping them up to preserve their wealth. Sounds like you're trying to do the same…" fuark.

Yet on the flipside, spend 100k to have the "opportunity" to buy a hard to find piece.

All of this experience the last few years has really made me wonder if Rolex gives a rip about grey market as much. Sure, it's nice to know i buy a watch and it doesnt depreciate like a car, but like i said above, i'd be happy buying a GMT even if i'd break even on grey. They could blow their supply to ADs out the door and all it means is those watches sell on the secondary market at like 1.2x vice 2.2x. In both cases, rolex makes the same $$$.

Also heard a lot lately from various sources (like above) to just go in and low ball TF out of the greys with cash and see what they take…..and that i'd be surprised.

Yep.

Jan 2021 was in Vegas and visited numerous watch houses. Not a single one even had a Rolex to look at that wasn't women's size. Jan 2022 watches were available to see, but were clearly labeled "Display models not for sale".
For some reason, this lack of availability is only effecting Rolex. Could find and purchase anything else out there. There might have been some shortages of certain models of other brands, but nothing compared to Rolex.
Not sure if the demand for Rolex is just that much greater than anything else on the market but it was/is night and day difference in availability.

Kinda crazy.

When i got my AK from the AD in Saratoga in 2019, even it was about 4 months, and the AD showed me pics of the case from early 2018 where there was almost every color of GMT *in the case* and a sub date and no date next to them.

Visited my local Rolex AD this weekend…wasn't even planning talking watches tbh, I was just there to pick up some cheap earrings for a retirement gift. There were quite a few pieces on display (Day-Date, BLNR, Sub, DJ, etc) "Exhibition Only" of course.

Ended up chatting with the sales associate for a little bit, just talking Rolex/Trying on a few. I told her I did have interest in a Submariner and she asked for my information, but I declined at first and told her I wasn't ready. I explained I would hate to get the call and have to pass. She again insisted on getting my info and assured me that even if I were to decline that I would remain on list. We chatted a bit more just about the market/grey market. Ended up giving her my info. We'll see

Also, my buddy recently bought a James Cameron Deep Sea from them…waited about 9 months…I brought that up to her and she replied that the JC isn't a watch they frequently get…perhaps hinting at a much shorter wait for the Sub.

Spoiler!
0% chance I decline if I get a call

went to the store to try on a couple watches I've had my eyes on for a bit

Omega world timer with blue rubber strap. Was so hnnnngh (srs). The blue rubber strap looks excellent with the way its center lug integrates the case and the bracelet. Open display caseback as well to showcase the iconic Omega co-axial movement.

Breitling Datora B25 in Rose Gold with Parchment dial. Was such a hnnnngh watch, easily my favorite Breitling available today… but it is also ~$25k (srs) which I think is insane for a Breitling, but I would buy one for half the price if it were possible. This one also has an open caseback showcasing the in-house movement

The world timer is gorgeous. The Breitling is awesome as well. The style is classic, and I really like it. Blancpain also does a great job with moonphase calendar watches like these.

Doesn't the center lug mean that you can't ever switch to a generic strap?

I love the couple of Oris watches I own, but damn, propriety lugs suck when you want a change.

I love the couple of Oris watches I own, but damn, propriety lugs suck when you want a change.
Nah that's just part of the strap itself…no issues changing the strap

Seemed like an appropriate strap for today.

Tried to make it as a thread but misc only wears apple watches. lol

What do I do? I like both designs. The Bathyscaphe seems more modern, but I'm sad it doesn't have drilled lugs. Wearing a $10k daily, having screws would make me feel better. I've lost a watch snagging the strap before.

Other than that, there's obviously a big price diff too.
