Anyway, back to Australia.... that kind of judgement happens all the time. The term "tall poppy syndrome" basically comes from this country.

Aussie brah here.
Firstly, when us Aussies go overseas, pretty much every girl gets wet the second we start speaking, 100% srs, no matter where we go, sloots want that Aussie D, so that might be why we act loud and obnoxious, we're just aware that we're phucking awesome in the eyes of all your women.
Secondly, as someone else said, you might have met predominantly tradies. Many tradies (not all) are absolute *******s who act like teenagers that never grew up, getting into fights, doing stupid gross chit, absolute cheeky kunts that can get on your nerves quite quickly etc. Aussies who go to university generally grow up by 22-23 and are generally good guys.
Pretty much we're all cheeky kunts that will get straight into banter and shut you down and think its a laugh. It's only a problem when you run into some hard kunt tradies who get pissy and try to fight you when you throw some chat back at them.
Hope that helped boyo.

On the subject of racism, two points people not from Australia can't know which contributes to the loads of people saying racist stuff.
Number one is our media is very concentrated (70 per cent owned by Murdoch - my hometown has *one* paper, which was Murdoch's first ever so aren't we special). This media is incredibly racist, I'm guessing because Rupert is. Disgustingly racist, all the time. This gives racists in the community the false sense they represent the majority, and they are out and proud with it. The rest of us are just quietly not racist, and nobody hears from us. Media sets the national tone, it's just how it is, and our national tone is entirely in the hands of Rupert ****ing Murdoch so you do the math.
Number two is a bit more subtle - a huge part of the Aussie national character is handing out chit. Having a lend, taking the piss. Anything about a person which can be seized upon is gleefully ridden into the ground - fat, redhead, Pakistani, whatever. It's not meant to be taken seriously. Take a fukin joke mate, etc. I have a mate Joe from Kenya (yes, that's his name) and he just cannot adjust to it, doesn't anymore but used to get his back up all the time and this was just general chit, nothing racist. It's a small part of how you know you're among friends, is you can say outlandish chit and it's all in good fun.
Racists are definitely there but these two points make the place seem more racist than it actually is.

However they're not even on the same plane of "loud, obnoxious, fake and just generally annoying" as their American counterparts

The "Aussie commentators" were laughing their ass off during the Gayle interview and it was the TV execs that told them after the fact to apologize etc. Hardly anyone in Australia actually cared about that non-incident, it was just a ridiculously out-of-proportion media response that made it look as though people cared. It has actually been the British media that has given Chris Gayle the biggest hard time.

I've got a group of mates in my dental course, and there is virtually no political correctness when we chat. Misogyny, racism, you name it lol.
However, when you have complete strangers making sutble or even overt jibes at you, over the colour of your skin etc... that's just not cool. Nothing has been established between both parties about the boundaries of what is OK and what isn't.
One time when I was walking in the middle of Perth CBD, heading to a surgery to get some shadowing experience of a dental surgeon... a 35-50yr old bogan sitting down (in his "hi vis" tradie clothing) says to his other mate (who looks like he hasn't showered in weeks, nor was born near power lines).... "Hurr hurr! Look, an ethnic getting higher in the world... hurr hurr".... you know, that typical bogan chuckle that makes them sound like they are missing a chromosome?
I felt embarrassed for them.
I was wearing a 3 piece suit, hair styled, nice leather shoes etc. I brushed it off at the time, but I knew what the situation was all about. It's a familiar story for ethnic groups in this country. Walk a mile in my shoes, and you will see what I mean. This surprisingly has NOT happened in Sydney yet, as I gather, it's much more cosmopolitan than Perth. In Perth however, it could be so bad, that I would expect it to happen at least once every 1-2 weeks (if I used public transport... or even walked down a fkn street).
I could list quite a few other examples... some quite hurtful (more than the story above). It's funny, if they were to hear me SPEAK, they would hear a very strong Aussie accent, and someone who is quite thoughtful and articulate.
With the greater amount of people in Australia being 1st generation (British, Chinese, Vietnamese, whatever)... skin colour shouldn't mean chit. Unfortunately for some with very small minds, it does.

Lived in Sydney for years - it hasn't got a fuk to give. It's one of the better things about the place. Race and sexuality especially are just not interesting topics of discussion, also the bogans are far enough out that most of Sydney is bogan-free.
Good luck with dentistry.

Well the thing is that the difference between seeing someone and NOT seeing someone in the Aussie outback is 110 square kilometers. That's a lotta land, and not many people. Depending on where you are within that land. If you're in a town, the numbers go right up.

Yeah, thing is... Australia still a very young country coming to terms with its identity. As such, some small minds don't really understand the "bigger picture". And by taking part in pathetic, tall poppy syndrome attacks against someone that looks foreign, they are detracting from the general ethos ofsoldiers who died in WW1, who fought for mateship, and the fair go. It's a real shame. These are the same kinds of fukwits that drape themselves in the Aussie flag each Australia day, get hideously drunk and cause problems in various places (assaults etc). To me, that's desecrating the flag and just fkn disgraceful. Anyway yes, racism occurs just about everywhere, but some people gotta wake up and stop perpetuating something really unnecessary... to strangers.
Yep totally agree. Perth was such a contrast to the big European cities I visited in 2014. Perth like I said before has a small-town mentality. People reject others outside their group, there is cliques very apparent etc... more so than Sydney. This is part of the reason why I moved to Sydney lol. I always wanted to be in a place that was a bit more ahead into the future and more in tune with the world.. rather than a place that felt backwards at times.
And YES, bogans are quite far out of here (Newtown where I live). They are mostly in the far Western suburbs etc, and they can stay there, breed their toilet bowl gene pool etc (lmao), and leave normal folks like me alone.

You think you've got it hard, just be thankful you're not a muslim living in Australia

Speak to a Wog (European's) and you get the truth.
- tell you exactly what they think, they don't give a fukc if it hurts your feelings
- you will know if they like you or not from the get-go
- stick to traditional chit that they BELIEVE, not follow bull chit trends
I haven't had ONE Australian friend in my entire life, my current group of mates are made up of;
- Greek
- Italian
- Macedonian
- Serbian
- Lebanese
I intentionally avoid associating with Aussies, coz they're just different people - weird interests, attitude, etc.
I am by no means racist or hateful of Aussies, we've assimilated with them and treat them the way we expect to be treated.
We respect there way of life, haven't pushed for a "European Takeover" or anything, we just tend to do things our own way I guess.

- Australians aren't of European decent?
- People born in Australia that are of Mediterranean decent are not Australian?
- You've 'assimilated' yet have no Australian friends?
- Wogs do not follow bull**** trends? I have watched Superwog, the accent is a ****ing trend itself.
Check between your legs for a pair of balls dude, you're not making much sense.

very difficult to make friends, as has been said people are fake, standoffish and generally won't welcome you in
the worst part about sydney by far is the women, holy chit it's so bad, the most stuck up pretentious boring basic kunts you will ever meet, nowhere else in the world comes close, and i've been all over
the standard sydney girl has the personality of a cardboard box and thinks the world owes her everything for doing nothing except being born
i can understand hot girls having this mentality even though i hate it, but even the ugly girls act the same
it's mind blowing how bad it is
luckily there are a lot of foreign women here as well so you're not stuck with these kunts
edit: i should probably add that i moved to the north shore which apparently is the worst for it
