The growth will certainly slow but the more time you can dedicate to perfecting every variable the more likely things will move in a positive direction.

There is a big difference between moving weight with a movement and getting the proper contraction out of a specific muscle group during that same movement.

A lift like the squat or deadlift doesn't matter because you can just focus on moving the weight and targeted muscles WILL get worked. A movement like the benchpress or lat pulldown though is another story entirely. There is a difference from doing a lat pulldown and grabbing the bar with some weight and pulling it down to you. And grabbing the bar and flexing the lats/contracting the lats fully.

Some people have good genetics and can just screw around in the gym and put on size/muscle. Others need to find what works for them. It took me YEARS to appreciate machines/cables. I haven't used a DB or BB for chest in quite a long time and my joints are loving me for it and my chest is better then ever. I'm not sure what I bench but I don't care. My shoulders feel amazing. I never felt I could hit chest on machines until I really learned that you have to focus on the contraction during the movement and if don't have to use the machines entire ROM because you'll lose tension at certain points. As for arms I don't lift heavy at all. High reps + super sets. No more tendonitis + arms look great.

I can get a better workout in with lighter weights, higher reps, and super sets.

it's idiotic non natties like you who spew this garbage

bad form on barbell lifts = bad muscle recruitment and more of a chance to get injured. Man lands on moon.

However PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD is the key to building muscle no matter the medium.

Stupid ideas like the "mind muscle connection" only serve to send the beginners on a wild goose chase.

When any trainee builds a decent amount of muscle, he or she WILL experience a pump in their chest granted they are benching with proper form.

When you do a pullup, its basically IMPOSSIBLE not to use your back muscles. When you row with good form, it's basically impossible to not use your back muscles.

Instead of focusing on "mind muscle connection", you lot should be focusing on PROGRESSING with good form.

It's like focusing on the 1% over focusing on the 99%. Completely idiotic

NO CHIT they shouldn't handle weights they are not capable of and then cheat with them.

Excluding warm up sets

Smith Machine Incline
4 sets 10 reps
1 set 3 partial reps (from chest to half way up) - > 1 full rep repeated 3x
Drop set for 20 reps
Short rest -> 5 pause reps

Flat Hammer Strength Machine Press
4 sets 10-16 reps (don't actually count and rest kept short)
1 set iso-lateral alternating left right (scheme is 3 reps done on left, right held under tension, 3 reps done on right, left held under tension and repeat til near failure)

High Cable Flies
4-5 sets short rest between sets and reps between 10-16
Used varying angles on the high cable flies

Dip machine superset with Overhead Cable Pullover (similar motion to lying DB pullover)
3 sets on each, no rest between sets, reps 10+
I use a basic bro split:

Chest, Back, Shoulders, Arms, Legs, (offday or repeat split).

Alternating each round through with a heavy focus or light/moderate weight focus.

There's just so much I change week by week it would be impossible to list a routine for any bodypart and say that's representative of the majority of the lifts I do for that day/bodypart.

I'd agree with you OP, there is certainly a role for it. Not to mention the research showing that specific intent on a muscle group while it's being worked increases fiber activation so there is some scientific backing for your statements.

It's a tool in the toolbox. Some use it exceptionally well for their goals. Others have different goals or mindsets and thus will require different methodology. Doesn't make OP wrong but it doesn't make you right either. Respect the differences in opinion and be willing to look at other options with an open mind, you just might learn something.

Pretty sure you are either "sumplimenting" or just a natty freak of nature. ANY routine would probably work for you.

I'll stick with the progressive overload with free weights and good form camp.

"heavy" is relative. as long as you are feeling your muscles work you are doing it right, regardless of the weight

My form is pretty much perfect on everything and so are my contractions but I do prefer to start with a heavier compound movement at every session. After that I do machines, cables, etc.

Best of both worlds.
This is the post I relate with most in this thread. Every workout I'll go totally balls out on one set of my main compound sets. If I'm doing a triple on bench I could care less if my ass comes off the bench a little on my last rep. The next time I attempt that lift I'll be stronger and my form will hold up better. Of course after this I'm doing isolation work.

People on this site are so bought into the idea that the only way to progressive overload is to add more weight. Dont waste your time. Tell them to control the weight or change the tempo and they lose their minds.

With that said though i disagree slightly. I think people need to find what their body responds best to. For legs and shoulders I feel that a little "ego" lifting like on behind the neck ohp or some squats is actually beneficial, but obviously i build up to that and then follow it up with dropsets.

I agree but I personally avoid machines at all costs. Working those stabilizer muscles are extremely important. Sure, if you are on a ton of gear you can just go in the gym and mess around on machines and see decent results, but not natural athletes. Since most people are talking about chest, I usually just stick to the main compound movements but to do 10-12 reps with good form. Barbell bench press, incline bench press, incline flies and cable crossovers to finish. I just use a pyramid system. Since I've cut out machines and added mostly free weight stuff my physique (especially my core and shoulders) has gotten significantly more aesthetic.

Completely agreed with OP,

Been natural for the last year now, and am sitting around the current weight of my peak(when I was on) 265ish...

Tons of volume, slow reps, light weight. Took a LONG time to recover but finally been feeling amazing the last 3-4 months.
