I'm going to India in 5 weeks. A few days in Goa for a wedding, then just under a week in and around Delhi.

Can anybody tell me how it compares to the chitty parts of Vietnam? I think that has been my biggest culture shock so far.

Very similar to Vietnam, but even worse air quality than Hanoi. Similar or greater density of traffic in Delhi (Compared to Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi). Similar or better in terms of petty crime. Check out the zoo in New Delhi - Probably the most beautiful part of the city.

i am indian and let me tell you, being indian is actually a great thing. we have beautiful people and we have ugly people. just like any race. I for 1 am a great person, have great friends, and i take care of every one that is in my life and i am glad to do it, and for that i have people that love me around me. also, indian parents are one of the best parents you can have. sometimes they can be really strict, but they will take care of you no matter what, and they will buy you what ever it is that you need. as long as your not a selfish ****head. Also, we all have great jobs, lots of money and a family that we all love and take care off.

If you travel in March and April it will be very hot. It's the premonsoon season and there's little rain, and also a strong westerly breeze that carries dust from our desert. This, coupled with pollution in major cities makes one prone to sickness. Carry wet wipes and try stay cool. It's best to avoid northern cities during this time of year if you are a tourist.

My advice is to finish the Taj trip within 2 days of your arrival, and then carry on with the rest of your itinerary. I think your trip is a good one and you should enjoy yourself. Goa is very nice and you should enjoy yourself there especially. Heed the advice of the German bloke who posted earlier.

I can tell you with some authority that the South, North East and northernmost Himalayan regions are great to visit. A lot of culture and friendlier people.

Finally I would also avoid street food. Five star hotels are cheap enough to enjoy, and quite frankly have better chefs. In Goa you should be fine eating at most beachside restaurants. A good tip is to find where most other foreigners are eating. That should be safe for your stomach. Also most beer there is 50 rupees (less than a dollar).

Don't listen to a lot of the hate on here. You can see where it's coming from, but mostly it's from people who have preconceived notions that fits in with the stereotype of the third world. That being said, those stereotypes exist for a reason. It won't be as in your face as people on here make it out to be though.

Summary:
. You can wear shorts no problem.
. Drink bottled water exclusively
. Best to keep wet wipes on you
. Carry a nice shirt if you eat at five star restaurants
. If you want to try spicier dishes, be aware to not try too many things in one go.
. If you have kids cramming around you to take a picture make sure you check your phone and wallet are still on you.
. Staring isn't impolite here like it is in the west.
. Travel and live comfortably. Even air travel is cheap here and can make all the difference to your trip.

I wouldn't go if I was given an all inclusive trip for free. People in my work sometimes have to travel over there and every single one of them spends their stay pissing out of their ass after eating the food. Not to mention most of the country doesn't even have indoor plumbing.

I got cholera on my last visit & unintentionally cut so hard I almost died. Took months to recover. Stay away from fresh veggies & fish & learn to love carbs for the sake of your life, mind, & angus OP. Srs.

Any thoughts on Bangalore/Bengalaru? I could have an opportunity to travel there for a few weeks/a month for work. I'm honestly leaning towards turning it down, as it's definitely not high on my list of places I'd like to visit. But would it be worth it to take advantage of the paid flight/hotels and food?

i spent a few days in delhi this year...
i met up with a tinder girl, hit it off, and hung out with her a lot. She brought me weed and hash.


are you a white guy? be prepared to be hounded by beggars. Its an awkward situation, 90% of the places i went to in delhi i was followed by beggars.
I was so incredibly out of my comfort zone, the culture shock was real, good experience.


You also have a lot of time off, I would consider spending a few days in india and exploring other areas in the region.

That's sort of how I'm thinking as well. I just don't want to be stuck there for a month or more if I'm not enjoying it. Basically if I say yes to going, I'd be working during the week and would probably have the weekend to do whatever I like. I'll have to get more details from my boss to decide if it's worth it.

I'm Indian and let me tell you....

That I live in Bangalore and its a lot better than the cities up North when it comes to weather/pollution, poverty and crime. There really isn't much to do here though and if you want a raw experience (which is the only reason I can fathom someone wants to come to India in the first place), then you'd have to venture out into the rural areas and the jungles (which are relatively closeby) to check out tigers and ride on elephants and chit.

The city itself, does have a decent clubbing/party scene so if you want to pickup Indian girls (upper middle class ones can be quite hot and they definitely do gravitate toward white guys), it'll be a pretty good experience.

What you need to keep in mind, when everyone talks about the dirt and pollution, is that there is a HUGE disparity between the poor/lower middle and upper classes. There are parts of the city, especially the muslim areas (no racist) where you really can't differentiate the sewers from the streets, but on the flip side, the areas frequented by the upper class are relatively clean and quite fancy. Yes you will have leprosy ridden beggars with limbs falling off pawing at you for money, but two feet away you'll have some dude cruising around in a 2 mil $ (we pay double the price for luxury cars due to import duty) phantom with no fuks to give. Some ******* just spent the equivalent of 200 million dollars on his daughter's wedding last month.

My extended family is white and they always love coming here (especially going to the jungle). I don't think they've ever fallen sick but they do seem to find the food very spicy and on occasion, have had bad experiences when eating 'street food'.

I think its all a mental thing. You white brahs are a bit fragile when it comes to immunities, sure, but ive seen white people adapt quite readily to the conditions.

Bottom line is, you'll either hate it, or love it. There's no middle ground. There are, like many people said, much nicer and cleaner countries to visit, but if you want something off the path then give it a try.






y extended family is white and while they seem to love coming here (especially going out into the jungle for safaris and chit)

I went to India in 2012 for 2 weeks, started in Mumbai then down to Goa and from there down to Kerala. I was with a group of about 6 people. I didn't get sick however 2 out of the group got fairly sick in that they had to spend multiple days in the room because they were so sick to their stomachs. Other than that though India was a great trip and I can't wait to go back. I took as many precautions as I could: didn't drink the water, constantly wiped my hands with alcohol wipes, never ate street food, etc.

It's definitely a culture shock and every once in awhile a smell will hit your nose that will make you want to throw up. But overall the positives far outweigh the negatives. I will say that India is more for those brahs that have traveled before (and I'm not talking to Cancun) but places like SE Asia. The shock won't be as bad. If you've never left the country, I wouldn't recommend India.

For sure, if you decide to do it, ask around various travel forums etc on how to make the most of it. Check the .gov site for warnings for US citizens, etc. A month is a long time to dislike where you are. No place else you can get them to send you?

My job requires that I travel to India once a year. The very moment the plane lands back in the US is the moment that I start regretting the next trip (srs). It would require 20k for me to "vacation" in India (srs again)
