2/5 NL 9 players

UTG opens for $15, UTG+1 calls and folds to me in MP which I come in for a raise with AK of diamonds for $50, it Folds to the button who makes the call and the initial raiser calls. we go 3 ways to the flop

flop: As 6h 2h

UTG checks, I bet $55 into a pot of $180, the button check raises me to $200 and the UTG folds.
The player on the button is a local reg at the casino, he's a very good aggressive player and is capable of having a wide range of hands with a $55 pre flop bet in position. I have a very tight image on the table and he knows I'm not leading out with anything less than AK in this position. If I flat the flop I know there's a very good chance he's going to jam all in on the turn regardless of what comes out, so I figure I have 2 options, either to fold or jam on the flop. I give it some thought and ultimately come to the conclusion to fold, I'm getting just a little over 2-1 to call and I just can't see how I am ever ahead in this situation.

He shows me Ah 9h, and said he would have snapped called me if I jambed my $650 stack on the flop. I was basically called an idiot at the table after revealing to them I had AK.
But with a little over 2-1 pot odds and essentially being at the very bottom of the range for calling the flop I dont' see how I could have made the call, even the flush draw. what are you thoughts? thanks
First thing when making a thread like this, don't tell us the villains hand. Its very easy for everyone to give you advise already knowing that. Also, did you call the 15 and raise 50 on top(I'm assuming this) or make it 50 total(too weak) also how did the button check raise you when he's last to act? Yes your flop bet was weak and opened you up to a lot of different lines by an aggressive player with position..honestly it smelled like a big under pair and yes, you can flat here, depending on what you put him on..you don't need to fold or jam. You're both still deep enough to play post flop. Depending on the player, I might just check raise the turn all in to any non heart, depending on his betting size/general feeling, etc. Obviously everything Ive said is 100% player dependent, which dictates every line you take. Next time you find yourself in the same position and fold etc, and everything gets shown down like this, ask him what he thought you had.....thats very telling as the hands over and players tend to be honest in those spots. I ask this a lot after show downs/folds etc, you'll be surprised what people put you on, because obviously what they put you on is more important then what you actually have..

When we talk about what we should do in poker, there's two way of thinking about what to do -

#1. What's the correct play in theory? (No one knows for sure, but we have a roughly good idea).

#2. What's the correct play given the fact we know how to exploit our opponent.

Keep in mind that to exploit an opponent, you have to open yourself up to be exploited.

In this case by folding, you're going with #2. You're trying to exploit your opponent by making a tight fold, in theory you should not fold this hand, and i'm pretty sure in theory you should be just calling his raise. So you fold, and in doing so you opened yourself up to be exploited.

AK in this situation is among the very top of your range, folding here would be making you exploitable.

But ask yourself this -

Do you want to be exploitable and make $50 an hour.

Or

Do you want to be unexploitable and make $10 an hour?

No one in this thread can tell you if folding or calling or shoving would make you the most money in the long run, because no one in this thread has played with the player you played with or has a good enough idea about how that player thinks.

If you think for example, that at worst this player has a flush draw, and most of the time he has two pair or better, and assuming that is true... then you made the right fold. But that's assuming that is true.

Now by showing your hand your opponents may try to push you around a little, but this is where poker gets interesting and the level wars begin... he thinks I think, and I think he thinks...or I think that they will try to push me around because I showed that I folded AK, therefore I will not fold...(or from your opponent's point of view) he thinks that because I seen him fold AK, that I will push him around, but i'm not actually going to do that because I think that he thinks I will do that so by not doing that he will level himself and pay me off every time I have it... and that's where poker gets fun.

What you didnt mention is how much he had on the table. Would you have had to risk your entire $650 or was he shorter than you.

At any rate, AT A MINIMUM I would not have showed my hand. There is no upside to that because now everyone knows you are playing scared and they can just push you around.
The guy is known to be aggressive, you stated that. He raised you on the button, which is a typical place to do it. If he hits top two on the flop, he made a bad call pre flop.
If you had him on pocket aces, then you made the right fold but you would think he would have re-raised your pre flop raise.

Any rate, you seem like that guy who plays for the set or a made hand. Thats a dangerous place to be in no limit poker unless you are willing to gind it out all day every day.

Or be aware that you are underbetting the pre flop and when your card hits come strong, which means your move if the ace hits is to move in if raised or bet in front of.

You did the right call. Before reading the last part, I had a feeling he had trips or a flush draw. If he's an aggressive player he would of shoved no matter what, there was a straight draw, casino play is not like you see on the TV where they'll throw away an A2 or A6, trips could be out there and there was always a flush draw. I'm a defensive player so I would of limped in pre flop with your hand. With the flop being A 2 6, I could see a Q on the turn and an 8 or 9 going on the river. You may have lost that hand but at least you picked up some information on that player I hope.

With that logic, it would actually be correct to bet a small 25%-33% pot again, wait for the villain to raise, call him, and let him bluff off into you

If it's an aggressive player, I'm calling there. AK is a dangerous hand though, people would pretty much always suck out on it online back in the day.

If he is putting in 400 additional to win 1150-1200 depending on what exactly was in pot it would be correct for him to call even with a 35% chance of winning. Not to mention the odds that his opponent folds to a reraise. Not even including chance of fold, he is in an impossible to fold spot. He will be against a flush draw or weak ace 9/10 times and crushed 1/10[22,66,AA ((you can discount AA due to card removal and the fact that the guy didn't reraise preflop))].

His bets pre and post flop indicate KK, QQ, JJ. Very weak bet after flop with A showing. This strongly increases likelihood that the other player would raise with A2-AQ. Giving that OP had AK and is usually in this situation against a flush draw or weak ace, he should never fold. The big mistake was betting so little after such a strong preflop raise (10x blind lol) Had he check-raised flop, or Cbet the flop 3/4 or total amount of the pot he wouldn't have put himself in such a tough position.

If you fold every time you don't have the nuts you are never going to win money. Without crunching numbers I'm sure the best EV move in this situation would be to reraise all in. 1/6 max youre going to be dominated, 1/3 its gonna be a flip (but with money already in the pot this is advantageous) 1/3 he is going to have A7-AJ and call off his stack with you dominating, and 1/6 he is going to fold.

First of all, the way you wrote this out is cancer. Look at this thread for a more readable format for this stuff.
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/32...lysis-1240609/

Anyway. I would have jammed. Most 1/2 and 2/5 players are **** and only doing this with Aces and flush draws.
Sets and two pair are the only things that beat you right now. Maybe straight flush draws are ahead, but since its a gutshot I'm not sure (Prolly close to 50 50)

I feel like most of the time a set/two pair will want to see if the flush gets there before they go crazy (These players treat flush draws like they are the nuts)

Any ace you dominate. Flush draw? Meh. Get it in. You have amazing odds. If you lose, you lose. I think its profitable in the long run to be willing to jam top top on the flop ESPECIALLY with a flush draw out there.

Does he have a set or two pair sometimes? Sure. Does he have a flush draw more often than he has a set/2pair? I think so. I think way more often.

This is cancer logic. This is emotion. Don't do emotion.

with 50% of more to win, you should always be willing to shove/call all in. ALWAYS.
There is always some dead money in the pot, so its always +EV.

If your stack is really that big of a % of your bankroll, play a smaller stake.

jam flop, 3bet bigger pre, A6s, A2s is only 4 combos and we block those so we're only crushed by 66/22

#9 on earth on what website? Did you receive rakeback?

I know one thing, I made over $70,000 in 2 years online (2006-2007) and blew it all gambling (not playing poker) I tried a comeback 2 years ago and games are 1000 times tougher. The HUDs and bot influx have made online nearly unbeatable without rakeback. Live poker still beatable, but nearly impossible to get enough hands in.

1/2 whole different animal than even .25/.50. Good times back then, did you just quit outright?

LOL as an experienced player for sure as a bait. For a beginner (? no disrespect op) who may fold to a raise... no way. Different levels to the game. Cookie cutter is best until you have a strong understanding.

What in the fuk. How do you fold top pair top kicker? He is doing that with all his top pairs, his 2 pairs, and his sets, which you have a blocker to the nuts. I don't think you're flatting $50 with A6 or A2, all of which you have blockers to.

Mind is numb. Pls OP.

Then again I am a 1/3 player so wtf do I know.

I don't get how you fold there, or why you would even show. Being at the bottom of your range for calling the flop? I'd like to know what your range is there if top pair top kicker is at the bottom of your range. Wtf do you call flops with then? Sets only or something?

Would have shoved after that raise on flop. Sometimes over analyzing gets you in trouble and missed opportunities. You've got top pair top kicker. Force them out of the hand is the goal of the game.

I understand that. I'm talking from OP's POV. Playing in a card room as a relative beginner asking if this is a good fold. Highly unlikely he understands range or expected value at the level you do (assuming you are an experienced player.)

Given that information at least in the near future, he should prioritize bet sizing and stop putting himself in positions where he has to make decisions. Betting 55 into 165 is great if you are trying to entice a raise. I don't think OP was. He even folded the hand.

Out of position i like a shove more. Plus the fact that the extra player makes it that the raiser is almost never bluffing with air (if he was we would want to call to let him continue with his bluffs).

So due to the raise being almost all value/strong drawing hands and us being out of position, i like a shove more.

There's no place to play until we ever get stars back. Then go ahead hit supernova elite and retire. Just break even and make 100k.

I was on tilt stars bodog. Hell yeah I made rake back and watched for every promotion while grinding up my roll.

Started with 50bux free rolling and playing penny's. Then 1 and 2 buck 9mans just kept grinding up. I had 1800 on stars and 225 on bodog and 5800 on tilt.

Probably made 25k at the micros all in all.

I am still blown away at OP saying he is at the bottom of his range.

So if AK is the bottom of your range on a rainbowed A62 board, you're saying your range is Pocket pairs and AK,AQ,AJ only or some chit? lmao strong everything.

$200 I am assuming he is on a flush draw getting loosy goosy and im ecstatic to shove, and would cream myself when he rolled over A9. Legit they would have to drag me away from the table I'd be seizing out blowing loads in my pants the second I saw that.

If he had 66,22, or even unlikelier AA, It was just your time to pay him off, but in the long run, you would be winning, especially against a known aggro player. He is paying you off with ALL weaker aces and pocket pairs.
Belief without evidence is a fools game.

There are times in tournaments when you don't want to take a flip with 51% equity, or more than that

In cashgames, you always want to... well, unless your bankroll is an issue, then you'd want to pass on a it... and assuming you have quite an edge

It's live 2/5, again it shouldn't be assumed that the guy on the button is good at all, he cold called A9 with the original utg raiser still to act. He could turn over A2s, 22, or 66 here. Best case scenario he has Axh and you're flipping, at worst you're almost drawing dead.

ahh yeah sorry i misunderstood your first post.

definitely shouldn't be sitting at 2/5, i'm sure there's a 1/2 game going somewhere - i agree he doesn't understand ranges, EV or even pot/implied odds

i think given our hand strength/perceived range, his flop bet size is really good, we're happy facing a raise and it allows us to set up a turn/river bet to get the money in however if OP doesn't understand these concept's and why the bet size is good than none of it matters as he's just clicking buttons

Didn't read hand as it's hard as phuck to read due to not being converted into a readable format.
Didn't read thread to avoid inevitable cringe @ misc poker experts

Open Face Chinese is the only game worth playing these days IMO. Anybody play?

Perhaps I am confusing you with someone else, but haven't you started poker related threads in the past?

Best case scenario? He bet 1/3 pot after a reraise to an UTG 3 bet raise! If that doesn't say KK,QQ,JJ or IDK what I'm doing... nothing does. Best case scenario is villain folds or calls with Ax and is dominated (this is the most likely given previous information stated)

You're ignoring the context that OP plays tight (probably TAP) reraised 10x blinds, then bet 1/3 pot. Given that information no way villain is reraising with a made hand, he is either drawing or has a dead ace... and you want your money in against either one of those (not to mention potential fold equity). This is a relatively easy spot (but definitely could be confusing given OP's poker experience)

For example, let's say I'm playing with op and have 10/J spades UTG and make that first call. You bet 55 into 165 I'm going to fold 75%, squeeze play 25% based on his bet size. You bet 140 into 165 I fold 100% of the time. Of course this is all dependent on what type of player these people are etc. etc.
