I dunno if this helps OP but I worked in the neuro ward at the hospital once and all the men but one were in their 20's and 30's were brain damaged or brain dead because of motorcycle accidents.

I crashed the 2nd day I had my bike. Crashed it into a fire hydrant (didn't turn hard enough and slid on rocks and went down). My front tire/suspension hit the fire hydrant luckily, had I been 3 feet back my head would have been decapitated off by it, maybe not decapitated, but would have snapped back and probably killed me.

Never thought about the head on hydrant thing until last year (crashed 5 years ago). Still remember it like it was yesterday, was grinding my helmet face first on the pavement.




Don't care, love my motorcycle too much to quit.

Crashed dirt bikes twice in my youth. Got a 4x4 and never got hurt.
Thought about a bike for commuting. Gave my head a shake.
Would be fun for autobahn. Don't wanna die yet tho.

Ive wanted a bike for years. But hearing all the scary stories and watching my brother pretty much breaking all his bones have steered me away.

Do it if you are single and dont care. But if you have a wife and kid I wouldnt ride

Just ride super defensive, I have been riding about 10 years, I assume EVERYONE is going to hit me, pull out in front of me, rear end me, etc.

Ride a ZX10R now, no accidents to date.

Weird this thread came up, my aunt (who's a nurse) texted me out of the blue yesterday and said "FYI: Just passed an accident on the highway, doing CPR on a motorcycle rider...

We love you!!! Get rid of the damn motorcycle!!"

Not entirely true.

I ride in So Cal and have never been in an accident I think you're trying to describe.
My only accident was in the garage where I was getting off the bike and it fell over on me because my jeans caught on the peg as I was getting off.

Close calls? Sure, comes with the territory.
Paying attention when riding (vs driving) is critical. Can't stress that enufff.
For me, the reward out weighs the risk.

My bike is a toy though not a daily rider. Have had my license for 12/13 years.

For the most part if you do the speed limit and don't drive aggressively your not likely to crash or get hurt. Of course nobody wants to do 35-45mph on a sport bike.
Lmao tons of people are killed on mopeds and cruisers, middle age harley riders get knocked off like flies. Brb twice (or more) as heavy, half (or less) the braking power, brb feel safe and secure because "I'm cruising bro". All it takes is 30mph to kill you in an accident, drop the bike and slide under some car wheels or into a guardrail or pancake into a car that pulled in front of you=life changing injuries or death.

No question that motorcycles are a primary avenue for the young to kill themselves, also car accidents actually. #1 killer of young people other then suicide.


I've been riding dirtbikes since I was a kid but roadbikes for the last few years, 20k miles so far. Gunna sell one of my bikes and keep the other for very occasional rides in low traffic areas, too many close calls with idiot drivers who give zero fuks if they kill a motorcyclist.

When I'm riding I pay close attention to other drivers and the amount that are on their cell phone and/or not paying attention is horrifying. I've had people pull right out in front of me and only my big avoidance maneuver saved me from death, people pull over into me for absolutely no reason and force me off the road to avoid dying.

You're generalizing brah. The type of bike has absolute zilch to do with it. It has 100% to do with the rider.

In my area, it is the cruiser riders who have more at-fault accidents than any other type of rider, and it has to do with the rider, not the type of bike. It isn't uncommon to hear about some inexperienced dentist/broker/lawyer that killed himself on his brand new cruiser.

There is a small exception, and that's the supermoto riders. Holy chit they get in a lot of accidents.

Been riding on the street for 12 years (Rode dirt bikes for over 20 years). I laid down my dual sport on the street once. I was wearing an armored jacket, boots, full face helmet, and gloves. All I got out of the deal was a few bruises. I still ride once in a while. Don't ride like an idiot, and wear protective gear, and you'll probably be OK. I don't ride in areas with heavy traffic.

My dad is a trauma surgeon. Said he'd disown me if I ever bought a motorcycle. He's seen everything that can happen on a motorcycle. Not worth it.

Gonna give you some tips OP:

1. Think of motorcycle riding as the ultimate defensive driving game. Always expect the worst situation every second you're on the bike. Yes, that coksucker is going to pull out right in front of you, yes that lady on the freeway is going to pull into your lane and run you off the road, yes that corner might have gravel on it. Learn to accept these things as absolutes and adjust accordingly.

2. GetLOUDexhaust. This will drastically cut down on idiots cutting you off or doing anything else stupid becaus they aren't paying attention.

3. If you get a crotch rocket expect to be chit on by everyone except other crotch rockets especially cops. You will absolutely get pulled over and ticketed more riding a crotch rocket.

Sure someone has said it but there are a few sayings.

Its not if you're going to go down, its when.
There are two types of riders. Those that have been down, and those that are going down.
Riding is like starting off with two bags. A full bag of luck, and an empty bag of skill. You are basically trying to fill the bag of skill before the bag of luck runs out.

I haven't really done street riding and moved mostly to straight track/race for the last 7/8 years but our local track closed a few years ago so I started cruising with my supermoto from time to time. Gear up every-time, ride defensively like others have stated. Can't control everything, might as well control what you can.

I know a few bikers as well, only 1 has not had an accident.

That is the main reason I will never own a bike, because my dumbass would end up doing a wheelie at 180 and turn into a stain on the highway.

My level of moronic driving requires a metal safety cage called a car.

Rode for two years accident free.

Many near misses though which led me to giving it up. Most significant was a car pulling out in front of me and almost hitting a deer.

One was an act of God, the other was an inattentive driver.
