So now it gets good - yesterday, one of the girls comes over to my house. She is visibly in distress (crying etc). We've spent the last ten years straight travelling the world competing together. Despite our differences, yes, we are strong friends. I question a lot of the things he does in life, but genuinely want the best for him - although the hypocrisy of my underlying actions signals the opposite.

My thread is more of a "hey, I fk'd up, what should I do at this point now" question.

I think you like her. Correct me if wrong. Or at the least like her more than your friend because I believe you took her side more than you stuck up for him.

Don't think it's something that could be mended. But apologize and tell him your feelings for her. Give him an explanation why you betrayed his confidence. Recognize your feelings towards her and tell him.

No what you did was bad and it just sounds like you've already decided it was the "right" thing to do regardless of what anyone else says. There are many open-ended answers you could have acted out without exposing your friend, you chose not to use them or you were not intelligent enough in the moment. All you've done is made one person feel worse and severed trust in a friendship. Though people use "friendship" loosely these days so maybe it doesn't matter, but if it was actually a legitimate friend then you goofed.
