Of course then every second post would be "Well why did he sucker punch you???" to which he would end up answering that he thought it was racially motivated. Thread would have basically been the same. And the respones ITT have been more about awareness/preparedness than the racial factor.

Your perception is correct. I've spent almost my entire life living in rural areas where the threat of being attacked without provocation was almost nonexistent. I will behave differently going forward. The recommendation to listen to an audio book instead with one earbud is a good one.

I deleted my last post because I didn't want to stir anything up but based on the responses here I think some of you are being willfully ignorant.

The fact is, if you are white, there are situations where you cannot afford to drop your guard. Public transit in urban areas qualifies as one of those situations. To deny this is both stupid and dangerous.
