Known a few. Closest one to me died from it. Destroyed entire families. All the others I’ve seen have had their life wrecked by it. No need to go into detail, everyone else covered all the bases I think

Like four people related or close to mom from where she grew up. 3/4 dead, not sure of all the details
-One was a high profile engineer, got hammered everyday. Cousin often times had to bring him home in a wheelbarrow due passing out on the way home (never met him)
-One died few years ago, had a bloated gut and some swollen chit under his neck which was probably alc related.
-One is still alive, is 60-something male that lived and was supported by his mother which recently died. I'm told he's a mess, probably gonna pass out soon.
I'm told the latter two worked and often got paid in hard liqour or cases of beer

My grandfather. Drank a fifth of Jack Daniels every day from ~Age 25- ~Age 45. Fired from his job as an engineer at Westinghouse for being a drunk, failed at several attempts to start his own business because he was a drunk. Doctors told him he'd be dead in a year, so he quit drinking for a few years and didn't die. Then my grandmother died, and he started drinking again, and was quickly up to a case of beer every other day. Then he was hospitalized for about a week with liver failure and learned he developed diabetes. He quit drinking for good then, but died of liver failure a few years later at 59 years old.

My boss, drank himself to death died face down in his bedroom carpet and no one cared enough for him because of his addiction he was there for over 2 months in 110 degree house rotting for 2 months until the neighbour complained of the smell. Worst part is he had a dog that also died since it was in the house and starved to death.

So many feels in this thread. Well **** I have been surrounded by addicts my whole life. My Dad (still alive and still a drunk pretty much NC, used to beat us until I started hitting back), his parents (Grandma dying of cancer in hospital, get a phone call from them saying she is over the top furious that they won't let her order up a case of gin), my older sister (drink and drugs BUT sober for 10 years! Yes there is hope if you want it), several friends from High School super smart but the drink and drugs got them turned into wasters.
But the worst was the Mother of some good friends of mine. She would be passed out drunk most of the time but at least she was not an angry drunk. The worst part was that this was just normal for my friends. She ended up dying before they started college due to liver issues.

Co-worker who is the warehouse manager.

My cousin. Smart, happy, friendly guy. In and out of rehab multiple times. Ended up getting so drunk one night he wandered into the wrong house and took a bat to the skull. He was like 30. Feelsbadman.

My father. He was drunk most of his life. Nice enough man just a chronicle severely depressed alcoholic. He died at 56, organ failure from type 1 diabetes and alcoholism.

Ex's dad. He would drink literally half a handle of Smirnoff mixed with a splash of cranberry juice every day. He was pretty successful in business and made his first million by 30, but basically just hit the bottle ****ing hard over the course of 20+ years. In the hospital multiple times, in and out of rehab, eventually his daughters (all obnoxious) prodded him into going full-on sober. He bought a property in CO so he could smoke pot as an alternative...good for him I guess.

My alcoholic grandfather died in prison after drinking cleaning fluid (hoping for a buzz). He was also in prison for reasons likely related to alcoholism. He apparently used to keep a handle of whiskey under his car seat, and he was fond of the saying "I don't drink water; it rusts my pipes." My alcoholic grandmother died of cirrhosis. My alcoholic uncle died after driving into a lake. I'd say those are all pretty sobering stories. Alcoholism is serious chit.

Myself. Should prob quit going by this thread but it doesnt really effect my life except for it being a pain in the ass getting drunk every day and worrrying about health problems down the line. Have created plenty of alchies from people hanging around and picking up my bad habits. Feels bad man.

All my friends are recovering addicts. I am in recovery as well. I have heard plenty of crazy stories and the people I know in recovery are amazing for having gotten sober.
For myself, I never knew when to stop drinking and would cope with social anxiety by getting incredibly drunk to the point where I would just make a fool out of myself on every occasion. I decided to get sober after everything came to a halt in my life. I had ruined my sister's 21st birthday, gotten a DUI, went and slandered my ex to her coworkers and got kicked out of the store she worked at, got into fights and went to the psych ward.
Now i'm going on 8 months of sobriety and my entire life has changed around, I actually have a life worth living and a future to look forward to, as apposed to last year when I would have just rather died.
I really suggest you brahs do your best to help anyone you know. I know it's up to THEM to want to change, but believe me, support from others is the only thing that will make their recovery ongoing and keep them in check.

Was a tradie who was a severe alcoholic. Was also a certified genius (IQ 165+ brah) and a bad MFer. He volunteered for two tours in the USMC and served as a radioman in his LRRP platoon in Vietnam. Won the boxing tournament on his ship going to Vietnam. I could go on for days but trust me, every single man who knew him has told me he was the most dangerous person they ever met.
Would get really drunk and beat me and my mom in ways you don’t want to hear about.
Worked later in a max security prison where prisoners went at him with shanks and they would end up within an inch of their death in the infirmary. He never had a scratch. He would then come home and get phuked up.
One Saturday he bought a case and only had a few. The next day, drank a chit ton, shot or blew up damn near everything of value in the house, then killed himself in front of me when I was 10.
I didn’t even drink at all in my 20s and have never been drunk to this day. I limit myself to no more than two drinks in 24 hours and I’ve never slipped up. Mom and sisters, however, different story.
Chit runs in families andruinsfamilies all the time. The minute you feel like you are losing control of alcohol you need to step away from it forever...forever. Srs, don’t let social pressure force you to make bad decisions. All those people telling you to drink more won’t be by your side when it phuks up your life and you need help.

I truly believe that more highly intelligent people see the world a different way and it drives them to alter reality by any means possible. I'm pretty sure there are studies that prove higher IQ people are more predisposed to substance abuse problems.
IMO it's a lot more fun to be drunk playing video games and not worrying about anything, than sober and hearing about how fuked up the world is, how fake people are, and the grim world that is reality. I am always inside my head unless I'm drinking and doing something else. That has already changed even just two weeks after quitting though.
/rant hope someone gets what i mean.

i enjoy the feeling of being drunk way too much. it takes a lot of self control to not give in to the urges. have 2-3 beers maybe twice a week, and I need to curb that even more.

This one guy used to be at this bar I used to come every once and a while 7 days a week, he'd camp outside till it opened. I'm good friends with most of the bartenders and they used to tell me stuff. He'd drink 5 bottles of jagermeister a week and a few crates of beer. Then he'd go to the doner kebab store right next to it and get takeout every day.
He got cancer a while back (not too odd considering his lifestyle) and recovered from it. Didn't learn from it though, I remember him getting chemo at the hospital and being at the bar 2 hours later, coughing his brains out. He proudly told me how he skipped 2 days total in 3/4 years. (the bar never closed except for 2 times on the 1st of january)
He wore the same clothes constantly, white joggers that were brown/yellowish from his nicotine/jagermeister stained fingers and sandals with his yellow toenails curling over the front. He shaked so much he needed to slurp the jagermeister out of the shotglas of the table. Had a pretty good job in IT, it's how he afforded his drinking habits and how he could go to work phucked up.
Bar closed a few months back, he still had his 7k tab open. I used to drink a lot too but damn, he just went too far, the drinking whilst being on chemo really scared me. He felt like chit but couldn't be without his drink.

Almost died a couple times. Parents found me and sent me to the hospital. Had a .34 BAC.
Went to rehab and detox endless times.
Started seeing a therapist and taking Zoloft. It helps. I'm sober now but it's a struggle every day but it gets easier every day.
Realized I can't have just 1 or 2 drinks, so I gave drinking up altogether.

havent had a drink for all of 2017, it started getting pretty bad the last few years. i think i had some sort of psychic change
but im worried that since it was so easy to quit, i can start up again just as easy

Between the ages of 18 and 28 I couldn't think of a single day that I didn't have a drink. I was mostly a weekend warrior but would have a few drinks every night after work. I still drink but usually only on the weekends. I haven't had a drink on a weekday in a couple years. I need to just quit 100%.
I know someone who drank themselves to death by their early 50s. I also have a grandfather in his mid 80s that has drank Canadian club pretty much every day most of his life and he is still kicking it. Everyone takes it differently.
