Lived there for a number of years. It has its own pitfalls like any other country, but I absolutely love it. Can't wait to go back and visit, again. Thinking about going after the Tokyo Olympics because everything will be cheaper.

Suppose it's easy to idealise dictatorships when you've enjoyed all your democratic rights and know no different.

Incidentally they were both fked by the end of the war - that's why it was so easy to nuke them into submission (J) and for the Russians/Allied Forces to sweep through Germany at the end of the war.

Lived in Japan for 2 yrs and while there are many things I admire; in the area I lived (Tokyo/Greater Tokyo/Saitama) their quality of life was poor, their working hours and (lack of) holidays ridiculously bad, their housing cramped, and environmental pollution bad.

As a nation they've also been polluting the world esp. the Pacific Ocean with nuclear radiation for yrs now; their record is disastrous.

If you don't think so, it's probably because you've never seen pictures of each demographic, let alone spent time with those communities.

In contrast to the relative cohesion in Singapore, there are persistent ethnic tensions in Malaysia with exactly the same 3 groups.

So them all being from the region of Asia doesn't mean homogeneity. Outside of the US ethnicity is important to people, even amongst whites (outside of the US) ethnicity matters eg. Conflicts between Russian and Ukrainian ethno-nationalists, the Bosnian war, etc.

Japan for years has treated Professional Wrestling like a true sport, as well. Not like a gay circus joke like the west views WWE as.

Sumo? It's actually lovely how srsly it's taken and how mainstream it is; esp among older people.

Ironically for this thread though, many of the wrestlers are pacific islanders, not Japanese.

Maat, well that too. But I mean professional wrestling. Andre The Giant, Hulk Hogan, Antonio Inoki, Giant Baba and Rikidozan is the kind of wrestling I am a fan of.

In the 90's the only way we wrestling fans could see it was to trade tapes via snail mail. Or ordered from the back of US wrestling magazines.

I mean Japanese wrestling feds. Those were not on TV here in the states and hardly any of us had internet then (80's and 90's) so we could not track down wrestling matches from Japan without trading VHS tapes originating from the orient. NJPW and AJPW were the feds in Japan but didn't air here in the states.

WWF and WCW were what was on TV and on PPV in the states.

there are actually not that many weebs there. the weebs are actually better than other tourists though. at least they know social etiquette, are considerate, and many of them know how to speak the language. other tourists there like "normal" people are so obnoxious, well in my experience. they're so embarrassing. they don't care for social etiquette or courtesy.

lol its true, a lot of old white dudes go there and its creepy as fuk. the old japanese dudes that go there are kind of understandable. they live in a different world so values and norms are slightly different. its not as weird for them as it is for us. even young girls that go in the adult stores don't care. i see a lot of young girls checking out dildos and watching porn.

The one main thing I think Japan needs to ameliorate is the fact that everyone's overworked and workplace expectations are ridiculous and unreasonable. You couldn't pay me to be a salary man, with all the chit they deal with and the long hours they work. Pretty sure all that contributes to the suicides. Keep in mind, though. The mainland and places like Okinawa? Two completely different vibes. Okinawa is laid back as fuk and nobody really gives a chit about anything LOL but why would you, when there's almost always a beach nearby...

Great country, though. Loved living there, at the time. Went back to visit recently, am going back to visit, again.
