No idea why they didn't just drop as many smoke bombs as they had and gtfo, although I know it's easy to say this when you weren't there.

I suppose they are soldiers and they are there to engage the enemy and not run away from them, but still I don't understand why they didn't try to get as far away as possible from the situation... didn't the other half of the convoy do just that?

Is that what your talking fr this?

Terrible planning by the US military, followed by lies about what happened, followed by a phone call from Trump where he says "they knew what they signed up for", and yet this is used as an attack on Hillary?

To others questioning whether or not those persons were 'welcome' - they clearly were, and were meant to and/or did meet Niger Government officials. It is par for the course these days for Governments in some places to appeal to other Governments for assistance of this kind. Anyone who works in this sector knows that.
The guys had no idea what situation they were in; neither did their chain of command - therefore the force generation was completely inadequate, as the risk they were facing was not understood. Hope this clarifies some of the bewilderment in this thread.

RIP to the soldier bros.

Did the rest of their convoy drive off or something? The article I am reading says there were 11 American soldiers and 30 Nigerian soldiers present, 8 vehicles in their convoy.

Kind of mad about the bungled air support as well as the scrapped helicopter assault team that was supposed to undertake the mission in the first place, who the hell is leading them out there cause he's got to go.

Just seen the video on YouTube. RIP to those American soldiers, I know in a conflict both sides have losses, but it always feels bad to see the good guys die.

Anyway, for those who want to see it on YouTube, the video is still up. Type in 'Niger ambush', and then click search. Scroll down through the list of results, and about the 20th video down, 5 minutes and 30 seconds, with no sound, it's there.

Read your article, now enraged.
Officials say it now appears the team went after Chefou from the onset, without outlining that intent to higher-level commanders. As a result, commanders couldn’t accurately assess the mission’s risk, according to the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the results of the investigation before they’re publicly released.

so we should all just stay home and only die for our families. lol, I'm sure all the other world powers would love that too. gtfo with your research.

I agree with some of what you're saying especially when it comes to economics of war, however, all Americans benefit in many ways from our soldiers not just the rich elite. The world is like a chess board. We are making moves. And this world is much better with America in it.

You do realize that the SF mission is to integrate with locals and help train them right? You do realize this is Niger where groups of ISIS are operating against local military, civilians and government right? You do realize that the SF guys work in small teams and fight alongside the locals against ISIS right?

Of course you don't realize that. You're a pseudo-intellectual.

Should we be involved in all these countries? Absolutely not. But it always cracks me up to see idiots like yourself with zero understanding of modern warfare spouting off when guys are in a ****-storm of trouble defending the locals against ISIS.

The amount of hate some people have for the US is so high now that supporting what ISIS does is a better option. Crazy times.

But oh well, as I understood it, American soldiers were killed in a country that isn't USA? Gruesome, but they do the same chit and worse to other countries and it's their problem invading a country that isn't theirs, again. They have no place being there and of course their opponents will retaliate, what else are they supposed to do. I thought some civilians were massacred at first which would be much harder to swallow
