-Accounting: got a job as a paper pusher cus i needed a job in that field. Straight up admin work, scanning and making copies of papers. prior to that I went on indeed and applied to any and every company. i got a few calls back but bombed most interviews. so i got lucky with this random call for admin work. eventually interviewed in the company to get promoted. now I've been working with a VP of FInance for 3 companies already - he just poaches me and brings me everywhere he goes and gives me a promo + raise. lulz.

I want to hear stories how you got your job. Maybe it can give me a different idea to approach this

As detailed you can be would be great.

Things I’ve tried:
1. Asking friends for job recommendations where they work for positions I could do
2. Mass applying through job sites
3. Finding recruiters on LinkedIn and messaging
4. Connecting with people who have similar jobs I want on LinkedIn and asking to speak about their responsibilities and the company they work for etc
5. Applying in person to places I see posted online
6. Reaching out to recruiting agencies for help
7. Job fairs (don’t even bother)
8. Stretched my skills on resume variations to as many different fields as I could
Was a part timer and was working another full time job. Hated the full time job, and was looking to get out and take on more responsibility at the other.

Then the layoff came, I went into the part time one and the regional manager was there. Gave me the canned spiel about how my position had been eliminated, but he encouraged me to apply at another location not far away because they had openings. I left somewhat mad, because I had been killing it and was looking to go full time and quit the other one.

So whatever, a couple months go by and the regional calls me, and asked if I applied. I said I hadn’t because I didn’t want it for the same crappy pay I was making part time. He informed me that the department manager was leaving, and that I should apply for the management position and he would interview me within the week. I went in, talked with him for a good hour and a half and he hired me back on at well over twice, almost 3 times the pay. Salary, benefits, the works. I quit the job I hated the next day.

Right place, right time I suppose.

I’m no different than you, every job I’ve ever had came from an online application. Luckily I’ve acquired some skills and time in a specific field, and I’m pretty sure that swayed my boss into hiring me at my current role, even though I had no management experience. You just have to keep trying, put yourself out there, and always, ALWAYS let the big shots know that you’re looking to move up and take on a new challenge.

- Left previous company on good terms, so they let me say I still worked there even though I didn’t
- Put my resume on Indeed and applied to individual companies
- Several recruiters contacted me from my Indeed resume
- I started working closely with one recruiter in particular who seemed to understand what I was looking for
- The recruiter took time off for the birth of her granddaughter
- The “sub” recruiter was only supposed to be checking my references, but noticed my resume fit perfectly with one of her clients
- She hooked me up with that client, and it seemed like a great match
- I literally spent from April until October of that year holding out for that company, with them trying to find a way to shoe horn me into the organization
- Backing the story up a bit, I didn’t receive a formal interview in April, May or much of June. The recruiter suggested forcing the issue.
- In late June I said I would happen to be in the area (bullchit I was 16 hours away) and would stop by
- It ended up being a 3 hour interview
- This eventually led to an early October interview that I was flown in for and was 2 days long
- End of October = Profit

I have a resume of peace, so I was very determined to leverage that into a great fit instead of just jumping in with just any company. It turns out it was worth it, the company I’m with lived up to my expectations and have exceeded it in many ways. It was one of those deals where they didn’t technically have a position open at the time, but I was the perfect candidate if one opened up.
ALL I ASK IS ALL YOU GOT FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES

Trained with the VP of sales for the company I work for...he wanted me to work for him for a while but it took me getting sick of my desk job.

Now I get to travel and I answer to myself for most of what I do...

getting into this. advice? i'm interested in a big 1 year program with several subjects to a college I previously went to. runs about $3k with everything. would fit in since it's a night class 4 days a week. they say I can take the NIM certification test there, but not too familiar with IHK.
the other one is in a different county during the day, also 4 days, but doesn't seem to stretch as much a the one above (from what I understand. just seems like a lot of CNC)
HOWEVER, this one trains me for NIM & IHK. if you want I can give you the names of these colleges in PM

-Struck up a good relationship with a guy I met at a bar. (He was head of sales at a company)
-Got offered a 1 month internship for a QA Tester (I was still at university studying Information Systems. They didn't actually have a formal internship program in place, which is why they only offered 1 month to trial it. Unfortunately, i didn't make a good enough impression. On my CV it said I was 'proficient' in SQL. You could say I bent the truth with that one. But my supervisor realized I was quick and eager to learn, so he advised me to go back and work on my SQL and maybe reapply again after I graduate.
-After I graduated, I reapplied for another internship at the same company (this time it was a 1 month in sales support, which turned into 3)
-Did all the small work that no one else wanted (reports, data cleansing on excel, training customers etc..) and constantly pestered everyone for more work.
-3 turned into 6 (there were no permanent openings so it just kept getting extended monthly
-Finally got offered a permanent position as a data analyst
-Currently working on building a database for a sister company that we have.

I used to think "it's who you know" seemed a bit unfair, but if you can create and nurture relationships, (and obviously put in the work to prove you belong, and didn't just get lucky), there's no reason you shouldn't take every opportunity to build a strong network of people who can eventually make getting a job a lot easier

Handed out my resume to basically everyone I knew and said I was looking for a job. My realtor's husband gave my resume to my (now) client, who gave it to my now boss. He called me out of nowhere and asked if I wanted to interview for the job

Moved out to SF about 3 years ago with no job. Was just doing some olympic weightlifting coaching, some recruiter called me up via linkedIn so I interviewed and took the job.

Hard to help without knowing your educational background.

Diversify your networking.

Join meetup groups, join local language groups, join local sports. Expanding your network is the first step, especially if you've been at it for 10 months.

This will be the thing that you likely have not tried.

I've worked a lot of different jobs and every single one I got hired or asked to work for. Everything from business owner, property maintenance to embalming dead bodies. It's not what you know, but who you know. Plus good first impressions.

Find out what companies employ people like you and write letters to the Director of R&D. You can find out who they are via Linkedin. If you have good fundamentals, your main assets at this point are your energy and ability to work hard and the fact that you are cheap.

Every job I've ever gotten, I knew at least one person who already worked for the company. This was from high school 25 years ago, all the way up until now. If I saw that a local company was hiring and I don't know anyone in the company, I would not waste my time applying to that company. I learned that lesson when I was in my 20's, done with college, and looking for any job.

If you don't have anyone close to the company to rep you, you're not getting the job. It's that simple.

No degree krew here

Started at a telecommunications company in customer service, moved to a few departments including Quality Assurance, left to a different company to get more experience in Account management, that workplace (same industry) went under. Left for a Service Management company, scheduling install jobs to technicians, moved up to team leader and gained heaps of experience. Left to go back to original company but as a Business Sales Executive selling high end comms products to corporations. Won a trip to Bali with CEO, GM, Gm of sales ect, wasn't happy with the Boys Club attitude and left to study Criminal justice (get into Police or government). Applied for local government agency (wont name) as parents kept pushing, got the job and deferred Uni, as they have a program that pays for your studies. Worked in Call Center or 2 years, then based off my previous 8 years in telco got recommended for a project job to do with the telco infrastructure. Once this project ends i will have experience in project management, QA, testing, dealing with outside companies and will be able to move to other agencies with same project or different.

With this position i get to travel, work from home, hours are flexible and great conditions, and i get to test all the new cool stuff before anyone else, oh and overtime is great too

Sometimes the small ****ty jobs can lead to bigger and better things, just gotta have the time and patience (sometime the patience gets to you).

Now im the happiest iv been in a long time, a career i love and will be getting paid to study and work soon.

Went to apply at one place. Brought my resume in and apparently, that impressed the manager. They told me about the things I'd be doing. At the end, one of the workers there actually grabbed a piece a paper and referred me to another similar place with the same job requirements. Said that place needed workers. A few days later, I submitted my application for the second place and got an interview pretty soon afterward.

The second place was a MUCH better job than the initial place I was applying for.

Networking is key. In fact, my previous jobs were all from people I knew who worked there.
