I wonder what the math would be if they didn't pay $60k cash for the truck and financed/invested.

Either way you can come up with shocking #s of what anything will be worth 40 years down the road but not everyone wants to live their life thinking like that. I feel like your average person also doesn't think of the stock market as a guaranteed 10% every year forever and are scared when the time comes it will come crashing down. I didn't read all the replies but he gave 0 information on his friend in the OP other than he was salty about him buying the truck. Most people driving $60K trucks are usually doing more than fine in life and aren't worried about stashing everything for retirement.

Not everyone is trying to live a FIRE lifestyle and get enjoyment out of things like that

You need a balance though, you can't go through life imagining the potential future investment value of every single non-necessary thing you spend money on. I spent $20k on a car in my mid twenties, lost over half of the value within a few years. It wasn't a smart financial decision, but I really got a lot of enjoyment out of it and have zero regrets.

But way over priced. I was looking at the new Raptor when they came out, but with options and before tax it was around $100k CAD, hard no to that so I got a Super Duty instead. They are nice trucks though, just missing the V8 sound even though the EcoBoost engine is a beast.

Nothing feels better than driving out of the dealer showroom in a brand new car. If you have money then why not?

That being said, I'd rather own a brand new mid line car than a 15 years old high end car.

Probably a diesel at that price point and in that case buying new is just about the only way to go with the price of used diesel trucks in the current market. A low mileage, newer used diesel truck is going to run you very close to what a brand new truck will cost and it's probably out of warrant or very close.

And also to OP, I looked at "lightly used" trucks. They don't depreciate that much to make a substantial difference. I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing I did all the maintenance on it and no one else has done stupid things to it.

lol at people who are jelly of others that can afford brand new cars. i just bought a brand new truck for 68k, i priced out used trucks and by he time i would have been done with interest i would have been spending like 5k less for a car that already had 35000 kms on it. no thanks jeff, ill take a full warranty and 0% interest for 8 years. just lol at you for not doing math you plebe.

I just hit 100k in retirement this year (including gains and dividends). Ready to stop investing into my 401k and roth and start living a little. Kind of want that new $500 xbox but I like to nitpick every transaction i make. Did buy a $5200 bike last year though.

This. The truck market is insane at the moment. comparing new to used, after dealer rebates and the lower APR in new trucks, it's almost a wash.
There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning as the correctly performed full squat.

For the record. I make about 20k more a year than bro who bought the truck. Money is not an issue. I bought a two year old truck for less than half the price (couple years ago) and currently make no payments on it.

Idgaf about having the newest and best truck. I rather not be making payments for years on a brand new truck that goes way down in resale value the second you drive it off the lot. I rather buy a 1-2 year old truck. Pay it off quick, have money for other things. I currently own two vehicles and have 0 vehicle payments. Both of my vehicles run with no issues. Now how long will it take someone to pay off a 60k truck?

I mean I guess it's free money so why not, but im not sure i'd still want to be making payments on an 8 year old truck.

Also, you're insane if you think the stock market is a guaranteed reliable way to make 10% returns every year for the next 35 years, but I see the point he's making.

This topic will never end because non car guys dont view cars the same way as car guys do. Yea its a depreciating asset but the memories from owning and driving something you like last forever, especially if you get a sports car that'll be talked about for years. If I get another car itll be something thats is a classic or somewhat used that can hold its value very well.

can confirm i am car guy.

I've owned two duramax diesel that I bought used, first one I sold for 1k higher than i bought it for after I drove it for two years. yes i tow chit with it, usually around 10k lbs. bought and tuned an e90 335i, sold it for $500 less than I bought it for a year later, sold all parts for 70% of their purchase price on forums. it's a fun hobby. it is also changing from millennial-onward generations that are phasing out "tradie" style things in high school and JCs as tech and multitudes of other careers are being integrated to schools. for better or worse, who knows.

BRB buying a car someone leased for 1 to 3 years, knowing they would give it back, so they drove it like a moron. Car called for premium so they filled it with regular, etc. Forget the mechanical aspect, cars are really a personal space. BRB previous owner picked their nose, touched steering wheel, JOed in back seat, etc. Just LOL at buying a used car. Might as well buy used underwear.

I have a few friends buying trucks like this...i just lol and drive away in my paid for low mileage 2005 duramax diesel. As long as they are happy, i dont give a chit. I have tried teaching them about money management when they ask me, but people will inevitably do what they want regardless. It's kind of like beating your head against a brick wall at a certain point. Just have to try to be happy for people, even if the decisions they make are stupid.
