To be completely honest:

The Conjuring
The Exorcist
The Fourth Kind

Take away social media, take away YouTube, take away the comfort of watching with your friends, take away any preconceived notions, watch them by yourself knowing nothing about any of them, and you would see. Most of us are too desensitized to be able to do all this, but that's how you make a scary movie scary.

"Powerlifters shout at bodybuilders because bodybuilding produces mountains of muscle tissue with no functional purpose. Strongman competitors look down on powerlifters because there's more to strength than a one-rep max in three lifts performed with a minuscule range of motion. Olympic lifters, if you can find them, get to feel smug because every 4 years, you can turn on the TV at 3 AM and see them compete for gold. And everyone hates on CrossFit."

Believe it or not, the first "Scary Movie" kind of freaked me out as a kid. I was only 8 when it came out, and I remember watching it with my older brothers. Didn't understand most of the humor but got scared lmfao

Depends on what sub-genre or type of horror that gets to you. I can watch gore, slasher, supernatural style horror with jump scares galore and not be bothered by them beyond the initial shock of the jump scare itself.

What I prefer are the lingering psychological thriller-esque horror, which is why Hereditary is my style of horror and why I hold it up as an amazing film despite not being "scared" by it. People who say films like that are bad or that they laughed throughout either go into them expecting something entirely different or don't care enough for the smaller nuances of what the film maker is attempting to do. Thats not a negative on the viewer, it's just not your thing I guess.

I'd prefer to be strung along, tense for 80% of a film with effective or zero cheap jump scares then anything else. If the mood is set and I get lost in the atmosphere of the film I'll be hooked.

Here is a post form the thread I made.

Hand down, #1 scariest movie... Insidious (The first one).

James Wan's direction, set design, and the psychological techniques and avenues he employs and explores in Insidious are spot on. Nothing is cheap minus a few jump scares, the over all story, the dread and depths the movie will get into your head is beyond anything I've seen.

These pictures out of context seem innocent and even kind of funny... but when you encounter them in the movie with Wan's film subtle touches... its a f*cking epic horror movie (i am only speaking of the first).

Even though he looks like DarthMaulBrah... the way he appears, and is obscured is legit creepy.

This is a lulzy picture out of context... but in the movie, hearing the store behind this person and why they look they way they do... bad arse chit brahs and freaky s hell.

This children bedroom sequence is the most subtle scary and unnerving of the whole movie... brilliantly executed.

The sheer lack of CGI, and coupled with ACTUAL set pieces and make up art made this sequence organic and legit unnerving. Everything felt human...

Same thing in this seen... the symmetry and psychology of why humans find "disproportioned" things scary makes this not only intelligent but again.. these are real people and set pieces, not CGI.... its organic and feels like things can pop off at anytime. Genuinely unnerving.
