Heres a little life lesson I've learned:

All of the high paying jobs - suck in some way or another.

Being a nurse might suck in a different wary than how being an engineer sucks but both jobs have reasons why they pay well.

Here in Australia they make around 65kish average, going off people I know in nursing. I make more than that doing security spinning cameras around in circles and watching movies. Respect to them, they should be paid a lot more.

In America they are payed ok. $28 start up here in WA. 15 year cap at our hospital is $52/hour due to Union, not including options, extended vacation, etc. Not a bad profession.

they deserve it

especially the ones that work on the, i forget what it's called, there's a floor that's usually the highest chance of death, when my mom was dying of cancer i saw other patients dying every day. a patient would be in that room, next day, mourning, and the patient is gone. imagine watching all your patients pass away one after another.

ER RN's don't get paid enough. 50k for the risk of Contact diseases, always getting bothered and harassed by patients, visitors, admin and basically not knowing what's coming through the doors til its too late. That homeless guy who's drunk? Yeah btw he has MRSA and has no history because he never went to a hospital and took care of it. Now you're going hands-on with him cuz he's drunk and spitting every where, open sores etc lol.

Saw that chit all the time.

Once had PD do a wellness check on some homeless guy who lived on an abandoned property with a garden shed in the back. They opened the shed and found him just sleeping there. Surrounded by roaches and smelled like days old human waste. They brought him in and told me he did a self-done amputation of his leg (everyone presumed diabetes). It was fuking horrible. The guy came in with open sores, unbelievably filthy and dried blood on his leg. I mean he lived but nobody knew anything about his amputated leg, so we all assumed it was self-done.

Imagine being the RN for that guy lol. They were lucky he wasn't combative and had basically given up on life.

Do you even know how hard it is to contract TB?

You pretty much have to live with the person or have constant contact with them for extended periods of time

besides the ER screens people before they get here, if they show signs/symptoms of active tb, they'd probably never make it to the bh unit

Not really, I work at the VA, most of my patients/veterans come in for Depression/PTSD

In the 3 years that I've been in psych, I have not been hit/bit...etc. lol

Sometimes it happens, yes but they are usually brought in under an Emergency Detention Warrant. Been of their meds for who knows how long. The ones who are usually the most violent are the people tripping on LSD.

Over all it's a pretty decent gig. You only have to work half a year, less than that, if you include vacation time. That is providing you don't have a 2nd gig or work OT. That feeling when you turn your 3 day's of vacation in to almost 2 weeks.

As someone who lacks a single compassionate bone in his body, I have no issue with it. Nurse is in my top 5 careers I'd rather jump of a building than do for 20 years.


They probably deserve the money. Seems unbareable

Yeah.. definitely not a career for someone that needs to stay busy and moving all the time. However,
I'd rather be a CRNA than work for 12 hours a day taking orders from dick head doctors and poopy patients.

They clean up poo/vomit, deal with sick people in a depressing atmosphere, physically can be exhausting, the shifts aren’t the best.. they deserve it lol. Not to mention they usually start at 45-50k. Rarely do they make 85+ without OT or being in mgmt etc

I don't think people realize how many types of nurses there are.

CRNAs (Graduate Level education, possibly doctoral, lots of clinical hours) are at the top in income... around $130-145k
NPs (Graduate Level education, clinical hours) are making around or just over $100k
RNs (Bachelor's Level education) around $65-70k

^These are loose averages that I've gotten second hand, with variance based on your location and experience.

Also, there's a way higher ratio of men doing CRNA compared to NP.

My first month in psych I was punched by three different people and had two bed pans thrown at me. But I had violent, schizophrenic people who threatened to kill people constantly, not depressed vets.

See #77. You may be talking about CNAs or RNs. There's a ton of specialties and also types of nurses.

And actually I just saw updated figures, some CRNAs can make around 160k. Pretty nice.

I've also heard of NPs and PAs making more than physicians in rare cases. Most likely family care physicians.

Depends on where they live. I'm the lone provider in the house and the wife stays home with the kids. Both vehicles are 3 yrs old.

It doesn't take much OT to break 100K.

Edit...my base yearly pay w/o OT and shift diff and charge pay is 83K.

All of you not in the nursing field fantasizing over the salary - do you really know the full job description of what a nurse does is?

There are a lot of things they manage to do on a daily basis that I couldn't manage to do

Most underpaid and and under appreciated folks in the medical field are EMT's and Paramedics--- nurses have it made compared to the medical front-line responders. Sure, give me $11.00 an hour to show up to a birthday party with a DOA and frantic parents/guests.

My wife is an critical care RN and she makes more than what's listed, but she never only works her contracted hours. She averages 55 hours a week.

LOL no. Most are morons. They are hard working and it is a demanding job but I've yet to meet a genuinely intelligent nurse. In fact, the more intelligent nurses tend to be the male nurses..
