I also recall speaking to a transwoman, who I was considering dating, who said that she believes she's come across a number of people she suspects are gay men who transitioned so they could date men who weren't attracted to their previous masculine appearence.

Basically, I think it's a complicated subject. I'm not blindly pro messing with gender identity, like SJWs are (I think more research needs to be done into the effect that media promotion has on the rising number of people claiming gender dysphoria, and nor do I agree with people under the age of 18 transitioning). However, nor do I think that transsexuality (and non-heterosexuality) can simply be dismissed as being created by an evil force.

(Also, being pro LGBT acceptance =/= being against conservative sexual ethics. Christian ethicist David Gushee for example supports same sex marriage, but is firmly against premarital sex, regardless of one's sexuality.)

you can always conduct an experiment. go around sniffing women, hypothesize whether or not they're trans based on smell, and then ask them to confirm. not sure how long you'll legally be able to do this for so unfortunately sample size may be quite small. report back with results.

This could work, although I will have to be very careful not to assume their gender in 2018. And I'll have to watch out for attack helicopters/fairies n other genders
