I dont think it should be legal to own one. Most of the people that cant control them are poor. A $2,000 registration fee with a training course would end some of the issue.

BTW they stopped collecting breed info for dog attacks in the early 2000's due to the amount of work taken to accurately get the info. So any data from that point on is conjecture, which may or may not be accurate.
But here, from the CDC, is a list of dog breeds and crossbreeds involved in dog related fatalities, from '79 to '96
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00047723.htm
Unsurprisingly, the pitbull tops the list almost every single year, and over the nearly 20 year period was responsible for twice as many deaths as the next breed or group of breeds.
also, where's the Labrador?

And somehow people still try to argue the hate against pitbulls is statistical and not emotional. Nevermind the fact that those statistics are all lumped under "pitbull" (quotes even included) and does not acknowledge any of the 4 "pitbull" breeds. SO a breakdown by each actual breed would be nice. And then I'd ask you (or people actually advocating for the murder of all pitbulls) whether you want to destroy all 4 breeds, all pitubll type looking dogs, or just the American Pitbull Terrier, which is the only breed with "pitbull" in it's name. Granted, the lumping could have been a result of the breeds not being specified back then. Though I'm p sure that's not the case.

However, typically both these mentalities stop at purchasing the dog, and no training is given to lend the dog toward one path or the other.I find that this is a big part of the problem with pit owners (I am not accusing you of this train of thought, just saying)
It seems that a large number of them want a pit because it makes a statement on what kind of person they are...THEY can control the most dangerous breed of dog. Pits that have attacked have had owners that were not capable or dominant enough.
The bottom line is, that if your pit wants to attack (for whatever reason in that moment), there ain't sh*t you are going to be able to do about it unless you've got a gun in your hand when it happens.

I personally know I can stop my dog. I've had to before in scuffles where he was defending himself from a smaller dog because other owners refuse to get involved.

I was bit by our family Terrier when I was growing up (6-8 y/o), but it nipped once and walked away. I was also stirring the pot and I'll bet I deserved it.
If you wonder why bites like that don't make the news vs the pits who attack and do not let go then you're just ****ing stupid. The pit line has been ruined by trash humans. Look at the videos where they will sit on a rope shaking it with all 4 legs off of the ground. Yeah, sure, it's part of training, but that's the way they behave when it's a human. They're extremely powerful and do not know when to stop. It's because they frickin love it. The breed loves to bite and tug. I've been around multiple pits and they're all good most of the time. I somewhat agree with some of the guys in here because they truly are sweet dogs... but you can't change some things. All dogs have the potential to bite, but when a chitbull bites they are just insatiable.
My Australian acts like an Aussie... if you run he will nip at legs and try to herd you. He's never been on a farm, but it's in his blood.
Pit owners can say whatever they want, but they lack self discipline that nearly every other breed does. Cope all you want.

I'm also not sure why people seem to think that pitbulls are "insatiable" or refuse to let go. And if we want to use anecdotal evidence, i have been bitten by more aussies, and seen more aussies bite other dogs than pitbulls. Nevermind that pitbulls were bred for dog aggression, not human aggression, so saying "dogs will act like their breed" isn't an argument for why pitbulls would be so human-aggressive.

Even so if you divide it by half they're still about equal. Plus the stats don't account for any other factors that might play into a fatal attack.

man that report is fukin sad bro.
I wouldn't have any powerful dog around a toddler, tbh. But if you do and they attack... you better mandhandle that thing and show it who's the boss.
My friend did that with his Rott and it never attacked his kids again.

Knowing that people that defend pitbulls as harmless sometimes have their babies eaten by them sort of makes the whole thing worth it. What ****ing morons and what a reality check this must be for them.

I found another pretty reputable source that basically states what we're talking about here; pit bulls make up an overwhelming and disproportionate amount of violence from dogs:
A five-year review of dog-bite injuries from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, published in 2009 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, found that almost 51 percent of the attacks were from pit bulls, almost 9 percent were from Rottweilers and 6 percent were from mixes of those two breeds.
In other words, a whopping two-thirds of the hospital's dog-attack injuries involved just two breeds, pit bulls and Rottweilers.
Other studies confirm these statistics: A 15-year study published in 2009 in the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology revealed that pit bulls, Rottweilers and German shepherds were responsible for the majority of fatal dog attacks in the state of Kentucky.
But, they also noted that a contributor to the dog's behavior was on part of the owner:In other words, a whopping two-thirds of the hospital's dog-attack injuries involved just two breeds, pit bulls and Rottweilers.

A 2006 study from the Journal of Interpersonal Violence revealed that owners of vicious dogs were significantly more likely to have criminal convictions for aggressive crimes, drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, crimes involving children and firearms.
These findings were confirmed in a 2009 report published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. The authors of that report wrote, "Vicious dog owners reported significantly more criminal behaviors than other dog owners," and they were ranked "higher in sensation seeking and primary psychopathy."
And a 2011 study, also in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, found that "vicious dog owners reported significantly higher criminal thinking, entitlement, sentimentality and super-optimism tendencies. Vicious dog owners were arrested, engaged in physical fights, and used marijuana significantly more than other dog owners."
To me it seems this argument can be analogized to the banning of illicit drugs and certain firearms. And a 2011 study, also in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, found that "vicious dog owners reported significantly higher criminal thinking, entitlement, sentimentality and super-optimism tendencies. There is nothing wrong with the breed itself, it is just more capable of violence than most. But those that gravitate towards pit bulls for pets are MUCH more likely to raise the dog in a way that promotes it being aggressive or violent.
Similarly, there is nothing wrong with a fully automatic weapon, it is just more capable of violence than semi-automatics. But those that desire to own a fully automatic are MUCH more likely to want it for illegal reasons.
My point is that, don't you think it is wise to regulate and restrict the ownership of a breed of dog that we know is much more typically owned by unfit owners, even if it's not the dog's fault? For the same reasoning that we regulate and restrict the sale of automatic firearms?

It's probably the owner's fault most of the time for not being educated enough to handle such a dangerous breed
I think they should probably be phased out because too many people don't know how to control them. A perfect example is the video above. The guy was easily big enough to control his dog but somehow let it almost kill that little beagle

I'd be all for more restrictions/thorough vetting of an owner for any dog breed over say, 40lbs. But phasing them out IE destroying their breed IE extinction of a subspecies is ridiculous IMO. You ever hear the saying "nature abhors a vacuum"?

The top 3 breeds are Pitbulls (which actually consists of 4 breeds, which i raised in my last post which you glossed over, whether intentionally or not idk), GSD's, and Rottweilers. So if we're being fair, we should start with all 3 of those breeds, since they're all very popular family dogs. And growing on that, your source takes info from a pediatric hospital, meaning these were all children cases. From which you can likely deduce either 1) the dog fell over to instinct and saw the child as prey, 2) the child antagonized the dog and earned an attack, 3) the child was left alone with the dog, or a combination of those 3 factors. None of which are breed specific factorshttps://www.livescience.com/27145-ar...dangerous.html

Like I said, I'm not arguing they're not dangerous. But this witch hunt so many miscers seem to want to be a part of is absolutely stupid if you take a second and think about it.
Brb black males commit crimes on a much more frequent basis than any other demographic, lets just ban them from our country altogether yeah?
^obviously i don't mean that statement seriously, that's just a tongue-in-cheek way to show how so many miscers ITT sound. Although the sad part is that I wouldn't doubt many miscers would agree with both statements.
Regardless, always glad to debate with you brah

When people try to argue that pits aren't more dangerous than other dogs its literally ignorance as every single reputable metric shows that pitbulls are involved in more fatal dog attacks than any other breed. And I think that's part of the problem too, some people want to blissfully believe that pitbulls are like every other dog and genetically predisposed to this type of behavior so they let their guard down and then **** like this happens. It's sad really. If I wasn't about to have a child I would still consider adopting a Pit, but now I would never risk having a dog like that around my baby.

In my mind almost any animal can snap. And if you got little kids its smart to get a pet that can't kill them easily with one bite. Especially one with locking jaws you can't get off.
Friend of mine went up to their sleeping dachshund and scared it and got bit them in the face. Normally it was a great dog. If a dachsund will do something like that... who knows what a pitt, even a good pitt might do.
