Better call the IRS and make sure she declared that income on her tax return, just in case. The Wall isn't going to pay for itself.

It's kind of ironic how tipping culture has only expanded to more and more different jobs/services in the U.S. as automation continues to make more and more potential jobs for humans to perform obsolete/reduced the need for them. If anything, this widespread expansion of tipping culture is just one more thing to piss customers off and make them even more willing to embrace self-service/self-checkouts/etc. than ever. I honestly have to believe that somewhere up the chains of command of mega corporations controlling everything, the expansion of tipping culture must have been encouraged from the top down.

Tipping benefits the employers in two major ways:

1. Reduces the out-of-pocket cost of the employer to pay their employees decent wages for their work by guilt tripping society into accepting an ever more widespread tipping culture as a standard norm not to be questioned.

2. Annoys customers by giving them yet another reason to accept, or even prefer self-service methods that outright cut the need for employees down to a minimum. Who wants to feel guilt tripped into tipping someone when they can use self-service methods to avoid the extra cost?

I'd say the workers of so many service jobs that were previously *never* based on tips in any capacity who refuse to see all this for what it is and decide they do "deserve" extra tips on top of their base pay has a lot to do with the ever growing sense of entitlement among society. People want stuff handed to them so easily that they fail to see how such entitled demands will only hurt their chances of having a job in the first place the more and more they push for it.

People who work hard for their money can spend it however they please. People who work hard for their money normally make way more than the entitled, sloot waitresses you’re describing. Let’s be honest, most miscers are in boring 9-5 office jobs where they’re sedentary for hours at s time and misc to make the time go by. Nothing “hard” about that.

$80 for a 6 hour shift was a solid amount of money for a low-skilled job any 18 year old kid can do like waiting tables back in like 2008, maybe. $13.33 /hr was pretty good money when the minimum wage was $6.15 /hr and people working in group homes, factories, many labor intensive type jobs in general, EMT's, crappy call centers, etc. were making significantly less per hour than the table waiting staff.

But anyway, as stated, that was "okay money" for a shift of waiting, not "a ton of money". I briefly worked as a host at a local bar & grill joint when I was in my early 20's. I think minimum wage was $7.00 /hr at the time, and that's exactly what they paid me to do it - not a penny more. Meanwhile, most of the servers were averaging like $15 /hr. Saw some of them take home a couple hundred bucks after one evening of work if the place got super busy with several large groups of people. All due to their tips, and of course they always pocketed cash tips without claiming them on taxes. So at times they were literally making $30+ /hr to wait tables, and this was a decade ago, which was like making over $35 /hr these days in 2018. The waiters/waitresses made WAY more than everyone else, including hosts, dishwashers, bussers, and even the cooks. They never tipped out hosts and some would maybe throw the bussers a couple bucks here and there. It pissed me off too because I was expected to and more than gladly assisted the bussers and dishwashers any chance I got, including getting customers drinks for waiters.

Yeah that kind of turned into a rant about wait staff. But those people have zero reason to complain about their end of the day pay with tips included because they make more than everyone else they work with at the restaurants and other similar level skilled jobs. Waiting tables is by far one of the most financially rewarding no-skill jobs on the planet.

Europe.
Only tip when getting exeptional service and great food. Most tips here get divided between all people, including cooks. If people imply a tip, I will never tip.

say hello to california where wait staff makes mandatory minimum wage per hour + tips. Yea these ****ers are taking home $30/hr at applebees and a lot more at higher end restaurants.

waiters and waitresses only complain that they "need" tips or else they only get $2.xx an hour, in reality these guys are laughing to the bank at your face as they rank in $30+ an hour easily.

Agreed, very well put. Tipping based on percentages is such a nonsensical concept. It always pissed me off how someone who fetches me a plate of steak and lobster and 2 beers that cost ~$40 altogether wants the same 20% as someone who gets me a cheeseburger and soda + 1 refill (2 total drinks) that costed $12. So they literally want an $8+ tip instead of a $2.40 tip all because I had the COOK put different food on the same plate and a BARTENDER poured them 2 beers instead of the waiter pouring 2 sodas. I mean seriously, anyone who thinks this makes any sense whatsoever is just a fool. So I'm with you, I've tipped as much as 50% if I ordered something pretty cheap and the service was great just so I was at least still tipping a few bucks for the excellent service. On the other hand, I'm not giving someone a "standard 20%" tip automatically just because I ordered something more expensive if their service is terrible.

And no offense to females, but the worst servers IMO are stuck up attractive women (key words "stuck up"). I remember this one college aged waitress, who was admittedly pretty attractive, kept touching me and my buddy's elbow's every time she approached our table. This was at a dump Applebee's. She was doing it so much and it was so obvious that she was just trying to sucker us out of extra tip money that it made it uncomfortable to me, so I intentionally made my tip lower. On one occasion, I ate at some local bar and grill place with my wife - the place was empty except for us (we were there at like 5pm before people started hitting the bars) and maybe one other table. Meanwhile, the stuck up waitress provided us with some of the absolute WORST service I've ever gotten. She never stopped back at our table one single time after taking our orders except to briefly drop the food off - never offered us refills on our drinks (and we had alcoholic drinks, she should have been happy to get us more to increase the bill and her potential tip size) one time, including ignoring my empty beer glass I had at the edge of the table when she dropped the food off and ran off before I could request another one. It was like she was expecting a decent tip entirely based off of her looks when I was literally with my wife, lol. This was the only time I can ever recall doing anything like this, but when we got our bill, I wrote "I'm not going to tip you just because you're hot. Your service was terrible, so you get $0 for a tip" and paid with cash in exact change. Sorry, but I'll tip the hard working person who makes a point of doing their job well much better than I'll ever tip someone who thinks they're entitled to special treatment based off their looks or anything else.
