cause you're not speaking chit. you're just playing a little app game. get Pimsleur Italian (that may or may not be available to torrent) do it for 3 weeks straight and you'll be hooked and surprised at how much you're speaking. it's vocab building, and listening comprehension from there on out.

Took Japanese in high school, but should've been more serious about it. Went to Japan this past September and was lost. Sparked my interest in it again because I have another trip to Japan come March 2019 and I at least want to become more fluent in it. Planning to take some Japanese classes offered by locals to eventually get my JLPT 3 and then one day get to 2 or 1.

In on this, Spanish is super useful so I'm going to smash through it in 2019. Might take some time to brush up on my Japanese and Turkish too

^^ хорошо

I've studied Russian for awhile. Can read at a fairly advanced level, but my speaking, writing, and listening are comically bad. I've seen a few русские братья in here. Pm me if you guys ever want to practice. I rarely get to speak.

Just made a thread on Rosetta Stone, this might be a better place for it. Copy & pasted:

Rosetta Stone, anyone use it? Contemplating pulling the trigger on 12mo since they are doing a buy one get one free thing. I can gift the second 12mo course or I can pick a new language. 2 years for $95.88.
I get pretty bored at my house (see sig) and I like the immersion principal. I've read reviews that hate on it and say "learning as a child is the lazy-mans way of learning a language." Sounds right up my alley...

depends on what language you are trying to learn?

I can pretty much guarantee that if you are trying to learn an Asian it will be a waste of money. every person I have come across on youtube or forums who has put serious effort in to Japanese has said rosetta stone is a waste

was teaching myself japanese over this year, it's actually pretty easy, i think it's because i love the culture.

i only know english too so it was a surprise to me to how fast i learned. i can pretty much conversate with people in japanese over text but yeah the writing i cant do for **** and i still need a dictionary.

i think if i were to learn a different language like with english characters i would learn so fast. spanish i could probably do in a year easily because i'm filipino and so many words are the same even though i don't know tagalog.

Universally amongst Polyglots that I've seen review products, Rosetta Stone is considered not worth the time or money.
Spanish! Any suggested companies?
I posted a bunch in the first post.

Baselang specializes in unlimited 1 to 1 tuition in Spanish. If you can afford it.

Duolingo is free, and has a big community of people learning the same language (just click discussion). It's considered a good resource for beginners to learn vocabulary, but universally people say you need more than just duolingo to learn a language. (I recommend trying to repeat the sentences that come with audio, to get some speaking/mimicking practice.)

how was learning kanji, and reading / writing for you? Japanese seemed WAY EASIER for me to pick up and speak / listen to compared to when I used to try and learn Korean. Japanese reading and writing is the very difficult part

learning kanji is easier for me than learning katakana. lol. i still am not confident with katakana. but kanji i know most of the basic ones by looking at them.
i mean i don't know a lot but the ones that i know sticks in my head. i think the more i come across though it might get harder.

i basically learn words that go with the kanji. for me it registers with my favorite words like chuu-sei-shin loyalty 忠 誠 心. these three kanji i can never forget because loyalty is one of my favorite words lol.

i can't write for **** though. i'm not sure why. it just doesn't register for me. even with so many writing exercises. i spent like weeks trying to memorize writing, after those weeks i couldn't remember them anymore. but i can read and memorize what it looks like.

i think i do pretty well, though i imagine i'm really slow compared to other people, because i've never known any characters aside from english characters and don't know any language except english

yeah but vocally i'm pretty confident, really easy to understand and pronounce, except for the ****in R sound for me lmao. sometimes i get it right, sometimes it's like wtf. "kore" that ****in word man. i feel awkward saying it all the time. even arigatou gozaimasu, but when i say arigatou gozaimasu slowly it sounds just right. fast i **** it up. but japanese people understand me when i use words that don't have that "r" sound.

my brother self-taught himself japanese playing japanese video games (imported, non-english versions) and i think a few light novels. i think it was a mix of playing and learning at the same time as he went on. he's 100% fluent in conversating with japanese people online or through text. he can also understand vocally fluent. i might try that as a test or something.

he learned really fast, like a year i think. he did take japanese in highschool but just for one year. but that was years before he tried teaching himself.

These people speak multiple languages, and give advice:

Luca Lampriello... (Listening, and Bidirectional translation method.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNScWReYGoo

Benny Lewis... (Speaking based method.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgec7VxZYc0

Steve Kaufman... (Listening and Reading method.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXqFD2bWHxU
Do I need to buy a course?
There are a number of free resources...

Duolingo.com (Basically the listening, reading, and bidirectional method.)

Memrise.com (Spaced repetition for learning vocabulary and phrases.)

30 mins a day minimum is preferable.

i've got genki 1 as well but haven't delved into it yet

the source that helped me most though was

best place to start for a beginner imo. i looked at genki 1 when i first started and imo it was a terrible start lol. they expect you to know kana fluently.

think i might order the same as you for the grammar and kanji

there was this one perfect memory website online that helped me a lot, i can't remember it anymore though damn it. started with an I
