It still sucks to have to front money for an emergency that wasn't your fault, but at least they get back pay.

The problem with this is that even if somebody had savings they would be forced to use them through no fault of their own.
I have a decent amount of money saved up.
I would be very upset if my job told me "Hey man, how about you fuk off for an undisclosed amount of time while our upper management debates whether or not we add a wall to the building."
I mean, what about people with kids/families they have to take care of? Then what?
"Hurr durr. Find another job!"
But that's real easy for you to say when you're not the one dealing with it. Easier still when you don't consider what exactly that would be asking them to do considering that jobs don't exactly fall off the job tree when EVERYONE is looking for a job. Some of these people ARE working a second job as it is.
Jeez guys.
Our government fails us when it plays with it's people's livelihood in order to settle policy.

Then we split up the family nucleus and have strangers raise our children, and I don't want to go down that rabbit hole.No. I'm for people learning how to manage their finances and spending habits. This is not a phenomenon unique to people making only minimum wage, or even low wages; many people making over $100k still can't figure out how to stop buying toys and winding up in debt instead of saving. People aren't supposed to expect to be able to raise a family on a single income minimum wage earner. These are the types of positions usually held by people still in school or living with their parents still, maybe making it by with a few roommates who are helping with bills, etc.
If one is making $100k/year... it's likely that they can float a month or two, or three. When one is living paycheck to paycheck in a combined family income of <$50k/year... they most likely can float a single month, but after that, it's anyone's guess. Fees/fines don't stop. Sure, they won't get stuff cut-off, but it's likely they will have racked up some fees.

I don't think you're grasping the concept - whether you make $50k or $100k, you should still have at least 3 months worth of cash saved for such a circumstance, and still be saving/investing more each month. If you are living paycheck to paycheck then you aren't living within your means.

I have sympathy for people that are now really stuck trying to pay bills, but it really is their fault (for the most part) and hopefully they'll learn a lesson.
When you take a govt job, you know there may be periods where you go without pay. This isn't a sudden revelation. You need to plan for this.I work in a private company; I know I might go into work tomorrow and told I have no job. I plan for this with emergency savings (3-6 months).

The government workers I've known live in an alternate reality to the rest of us.
Brb Why worry about living paycheck to paycheck when you know your job and hence your next paycheck is safe ?
Brb Why put away money for retirement when the taxpayer's got you covered with a defined pension plan?
Brb Why worry about the rising cost of living when you can just go on strike and DEMAND pay increases?

Lol so much anger from these private sector trump cucks. The jealousy is just oozing off the screen.
Shouldn't you losers be kissing your bosses ass or thinking up ways how you can improve your productivity? Better get off the misc before your ass gets canned.

We pay into a retirement plan. That's doesn't mean we can't have multiple retirement plans. Smart ones do if they can afford it.

A few BS stats coming from the misc in here, let's clear a couple up:
-A lot of federal jobs do NOT pay well
-A lot of federal jobs are in locations (San Francisco for example) where COL (cost of living) adjustments do not match the actual cost of living and therefore people can't save money. There's a reason there are so many shortages in major cities for federal work. Why work for 55k a year starting at a federal job in the bay area when rent is going to cost you 40k a year? No one wants to do it.
-Many federal jobs require a college degree so this idea of uneducated idiots is probably coming from people looking at the TSA and some other organizations
That being said, this should be a good lesson to everyone in the US that half these jobs that aren't being paid aren't actually needed. Having worked in the government in one capacity or another since I was 18, you will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER find anyone lazier and more worthless and inefficient than you will in the federal government. I've seen people who show up to work for 10-20 years and do absolutely nothing and get paid their 75k a year and have no accountability to anyone. All one needs to do is look at the VA for the perfect example of waste, corruption, laziness and an entire organization that needs to be shut down.

However, to work for the government, this takes characteristics that are more left leaning, specifically in the modern day massive governments that exist.
That is to say that Trump should keep it up because not only does it help his cause, but it also hurts people who are against him.

Still doesn't make sense not to have even 1 month of living expenses.
I don't direct my discontent towards those who can't help but struggle even in the best of times. For everyone else, this isn't a recession when I remember people HOPED for furloughs or pay cuts just to stay employed.

It's like fitness and eating right. Yeah... eat less. move more.. so why is the world's obesity rate off the charts? Simple right?
Those living on necessities isn't low at all. I know a lot of co-workers who are working past retirement simply because they can't afford to retire. They aren't living a lavish lifestyle. When you barely make rent and feed your kids, you aren't out buying iPhones to heat your home with candles.

I have a friend on ******** that husband is an Air traffic controller. She doesnt work and post pics ever day of her shopping and vacationing. She was complaining BEFORE they actually stopped getting paychecks that the shut down was causing them financial ruin.
In reality they were simply forced to cut back and stop spending 100% of their money in preparation and it was the end of her world.

When you barely make rent and feed your kids, you aren't out buying iPhones to heat your home with candles.

i agree. i'm sick of paying their salaries with my tax dollars. only low IQ and lazy people that can't hack it in the private sector go for these jobs. their jobs aren't even important. i can't believe how these people can't save up for situations like this even though they're making like 40k a year. with that kind of money, they should be saving instead of living beyond their means. they should have at least 6 months saved up with that kind of money. don't get me started about the 30% or so of them that are veterans. they definitely should know better. talk about being irresponsible. i don't see why it's so difficult especially when i could do it. it's time they went and got a real job and stop freeloading off of us real americans

All government money originated from the private sector but they seem oblivious to this.I could be wrong, but federal workers, and most local/state gov't workers cannot strike.
We pay into a retirement plan. That's doesn't mean we can't have multiple retirement plans. Smart ones do if they can afford it.
