I'm of mixed opinion on this. Yes college prices have gone crazy, even to state schools. So starting people off with 50k in debt or more does suck. House prices are also inflated and that is against them too. My parents moved out here to Colorado when my dad retired. They bought a house for 232k and have a contract right now to sell it for 335k four years later. I bought mine for 196k back in 2010 and could sell it now for 300k. So it's not all their fault.

But as others have said, it's also on them to not rack up an additional 30k on credit cards, pay 1k for the latest greatest phone/computer/gadgets, need to drive a new car, drink a $5 Starbucks coffee every morning, and to not major in decorative basket weaving. They have to be more disciplined to get out from under that debt, not spend outside their means using a credit card, etc.

I have just under 5k in credit card debt and that's too much. I don't carry my current credit card and switch cards every 18 months to a new zero interest card to pay it off. We have 3 cars, an 03 f150, a 98 Cadillac, and my wife's 2011 GMC Acadia. Nothing fancy. I just got a new cell phone after having one for 3.5 years and only did it because it was free when my wife bought one.

My sister in law lives in a trailer with her loser husband and they just bought a new car. Could have bought a 3 or 4 year old car for much less and saved the difference for a down payment on a house, but she had to have new.

Work for an academic/athletic scholarship
Work full time and pay as you go
Get loans, coast by and complain about debt

If you don't like home prices in your town, move. The reason this hypothetical house would go from 150k-->610k is location and population density.

But there's a difference between going to school out of state and paying 30k a year vs doing 2 years at a community college paying like 4k a year then going to an instate school getting pretty much the same education. Problem is millenials want to get as far away from their parents as possible so they can party. Their own faults. Ex used to complain about her student loan debt all the time. Went to school in michigan then transferred to iowa. For an English degree. Could've got the same education at ISU for half the cost. Or commuted at UIC for 1/8 of the cost.

Poor choices. Only ones that have excuses are super smart people who get into great schools that specialize in certain fields so they can be at the top of the career world.

I knew a girl who went to school at Mercer pharmacy school for $50k a year when she had a full ride scholarship to UGA pharmacy school because she said she was tired of living in Athens lmao.

This. A lot of people pay big bucks for the lower div GEs thinking they will get something of value out of it 10 years down the road career wise. Since millennials in this article don't own homes and the focus is student loan debt, a lot could benefit from career advancement by having employer paid graduate school and taking a lower end job/internship during that time frame. Brother in law did that and is easily 150k+/yr (poverty on misc) now.

Never so much as seen a student loan application form, and haven't received a dime in money from my family. If you want something (like a college education without debt) get out there and get it done.

It's difficult, and I work a lot of 12-14 hour days, but I'll never be beholden to a student loan. You're an adult, you always have choices and options, some are harder than others, but usually have a worthwhile reward.

Isn‘t the problem more that student loans are simply not payed back and instead, minimal payments are made until you die? I‘m not familiar with the concept, it doesn‘t exist where I live.

To be fair, who planted that idea in our youth in our first place? The idea that you have to go to collegue, get a chit ton of debt, get a BS job to pay for said debt and have some spare cash to live and to CONSUME useless crap. This status quo of live to consume and consume to live is the biggest scam of modernity, it forces or youth to chase a pipe dream thinking buying and consuming is the only way to live and the only way to achieve happiness and well being.
