All the powerlifting guys in my gym are pretty cool with one notable exception. He's a fairly big guy but not as strong as his size would suggest. He has a ton of tattoos that look like they were done in a kitchen and one really big professionally done tattoo of a college logo. He is very loud and profane. All the guys he works out with are really nice and polite but he's so damn loud and annoying. Every time I see the group of them I think they must have been friends since kindergarten cause there is no way he would have gotten into that group in adulthood

But I will say that I have met those powerlifting types you mentioned above. I did smash one chick that was a powerlifter. She was in great shape, had an A cup but a booty lol. Kinda too muscular for my liking in hindsight. She was a nurse FWIW.

OP you also meet the folks who CALL themselves powerlifters but can't hit a 1000 total too.
A nurse who lifts sounds like a catch right there. Pretty much every single woman I've seen who powerlifts has been in crazy good shape. Even alot of the guys around here (most are powerbuilders anyways).

I rarely see the toxic powerlifting culture that's being described here, unless it's on social media.

Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

This was maybe about 5 years ago and I was "off" with my ex. Saw this girl in the gym every now and then and we'd talk briefly. Kinda shy/nerdy girl and we would see each other. Then we eventually worked out together every now and then.

Now when I "broke up" with my ex for the 23414423 time I saw this girl at the gym and I had some car troubles. She offered to drive me home but first we stopped to have some food. I hit on her, ended up making a move on her lol. So we decided to go on a date the week after and I ended up smashing.

Thing is she got weird after b/c we "rushed" sex but I knew her about 4 months at this point but I didn't pursue b/c my ex and I reconciled again lol. Kinda wish I got to smash her again but she was a bit awkward and painfully shy TBH.

Lol I know quite a few guys who are fat ****s and “power lift” despite not being able to total 1,000

That includes wearing gloves, belts, all that bull**** which you don’t even need at lower weight.

Think they just do it to avoid reality of being fat

let's just say if I were to pick a group of people to surround myself with that would give me a great chance at IRL success, it wouldn't be the powerlifters. I'd go with the crossfitters before them, srs.

I have this same experience. It's a shame that most of the guy's experience in powerlifting was a negative one. I competed in my first powerlifting meet in 2003 so well before the whole era of social media and when it was mostly the equipped lifting you would hear about and not so much the raw powerlifting.

My first experience was great. It was a local meet and it was really chill. I by far was not the strongest (was one of the weakest) but still there was no judgment and everybody was cheering everybody on to do their best. It was a very positive environment with no ego-tripping involved. Everybody was willing to lend a helping hand, give advice, etc. Being my first time I had no idea what to do but I had some people come up to me and walk me through the ropes of what constitutes a meet. People were for the most part friendly as well. This has also been my experience with most subsequent meets.

I think many people have a lot of misconceptions about powerlifting in general like how it's basically all fat fuks or skinny asian twinks. I mean yeah they are but who cares? The objective is to lift the most amount of weight not necessarily to look jacked. Although there are plenty of strong people in the 74/83/93/105 kg divisions that also look pretty jacked. People would mostly be referring to any divisions below or above that which isn't the majority of people. Numbers people put up are irrelevant too, god forbid we are making fun who want to get stronger and progress but happen to like powerlifting.

I do understand what some people mean by certain toxic elements but that's in almost any community and don't get why people attribute this specifically to powerlifting. The gym I go to admittedly has more of an old school vibe but it is a powerlifting gym and everybody there is fairly chill. We have xmas parties as well where everybody lifts and eats food. Good times. Not sure where people get the idea that powerlifting is full of purple haired SJW *******s. I think that's more a product of your location rather than the activity or group itself. In a city sure you'll see more of that but in the suburbs maybe not as much.

I guess that's why the misc has gone downhill, to the point where we berate people for lifting on a lifting forum. It's an activity/hobby just like any other. Some people have fun doing it, it isn't for some other people. If you don't like it why do people care so much lol? I'll agree it can be pretty cringe at times and hogging the one and only squat rack for an hour in a commercial gym without allowing others to work in probably isn't good gym etiquette. But other than that people should probably spend less time hating.

TLDR;

Why not **** off and let proper lifters be done with their squats in 10 minutes flat - including their warm up sets too.

I absolutely destest kitted up powerlifters (plus their fat) who think they are strong.

Das it sword. I dated a super shy & introverted girl my freshman year in college. She was cool but not sexy at all. She'd do this weird guilty hesitation thing sometimes whenever I got physical and it used to annoy the hell out of me.

There's a couple girls like that at my gym but the boyfriends always materialize when I try talking to them.

And it wouldn't be the clinically obese bodybuilders. I remember that one time when Rich Piana was sucker punched by Mac Trucc (or however you spell it), his 5% crew gathered to back him up and both sides clashed for 5 seconds. There was some huge bodybuilder "MMA guy" (that's what they called him) in the 5% crew who quickly blew out his knee. JFL

As much as people chit on crossfitters, that chit requires a certain level of fitness, endurance and dedication and there's a group "go go go can't back down" mentality.

Rich was the "PMMA guy" who blew out his knee

I just got done my old man dadbod workout of SLDL followed by high rep pendlay rows and every stereotype from this thread was in the "olympic area" that 24 hour chitness has with the crossfit racks and oly plates.

Fat chicks, check, fat dudes, check, Asian tryhards in gear lifting girl weights, check. Holy fukking cringe, I wish I had a heater in my garage so I could go back to my home gym. The indian dude with 40% bodyfat strutting around after lifting 185 was the absolute icing on the cake

i know a lot of elite powerlifters and have a pretty decent total myself just below elite level but i only did 1 meet.

Theres a very small percentage even among "elite" powerlifters who are actually training with a program year round, a mapped out diet with meal prepping, and fending off stress, drugs, and alcohol in the offseason. Most powerlifters I know are fit into 2 categories : fat ****s who cant stick to a diet or a program and thinkg lifting big numbers for 1 rep makes them a badass and they only follow a program 8 weeks out from a meet and are only strong because they are fat mother****ers who eat like ****, OR skinny AF guys who rely on wilks numbers and pull 1/2 of national record weight for higher weight classes but think they are strong as **** i.e. "im 140lb but i pull 500lbs so bow down to my strength", also, loosely follows a meal plan and constantly makes posts of how they did their "345 squats x2x3 at an RPE of 6.4736"

meanwhile most pro and veteran bodybuilders who follow strict progressive overload can probably total more than 80% of elite level powerlifters without even being on powerlifting programs or having the same 35% bodyfat.

Rich blew out his knee on a South American TV show. Some other dude blew out his knee in the Mac Trucc incident.

But yeah brown/Indian currycels at the gym are some of the worst I've seen. They're usually in groups, smell, leave a mess and never rerack, act hard curling 10-pound dumbbells and benching 85 pounds, and they're all fat or skinny fat.

*******s
you sound pretty upset

no offense but if you can complete squats in 10 minutes flat including warmup sets you either don't squat very much weight or aren't pushing the weights and effort heavy enough. I take around 5-10 minutes of warming up/mobility stretching to reach my working sets (usually around high 300s to low 400s) and do 5-6 sets with 3 minutes rest. so about 25 minutes on average. Plus maybe another compound lift somewhere else which is 15-20 minutes, then just finish up with 3-4 accessory movements in about 15-20 minutes again. I'm usually out the gym in 60 minutes.

other than that there isn't really much to respond to since you didn't read my post

Lmao

To much real life man.

It's bad at my commercial gym.

Was benching other day and these 2 kids changed into their $200 powerlifting shoes to bench. Seems that most people these days want the perception they are big into lifting for social media purposes.

It’s called warming up away from the rack.

Also, powerlifters are the biggest wastes of rack time in the gym. Of course I’m not training for maximum weights because this means nothing. And any fat guy will always be able to squat more and dead lift more with some training simply due to being heavier.

Lifting in general attracts incel, socially awkward potatoes. Especially when they're trying to do it "at a high level." Nothing new here.

Is that all you got?

Sounds like someone benches with back arch and lifts with a lot of kit. Let me guess you also carry chalk?

Just lmao at not being sponsored and being so serious. Just lmao

And I know it hurts because of your paltry negs. As if it would hurt me as an 08 miscer. *******. Just shows how right the OP is at calling out wannabe pro athletes who take themselves so seriously. Lol

Yeah gym culture in general became pretty ****gy. I go to a commercial gym and I'm almost never in the weight room, I'm usually in the corner of the studio doing my calisthenics/mobility twink stuff.

That being said I genuinely enjoy this stuff compared to just pushing weights though. **** got repetitive af after a while with no progress as a natty
There and back again twice, a deep red's tale.
