Hey selifsh idiot - do NOT buy N95 masks if you are not a healthcare worker or a treatment facility. From the CDC:

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not recommend that the general public wear N95 respirators to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including coronavirus (COVID-19)."

These masks are high grade and are used by healthcare workers because they are exposed to many different kinds of particles in their daily work - they go through these masks like toothpicks so that we can have hospitals remained staffed throughout the year.

Literally anything that covers your mouth/nose will be sufficient for preventing covid-19 from entering your body from airborn particles. You like n95 because it has holes in it? Hey moron - did you know that cloth stiched bandanas are not perfectly solid? They have tons of tiny holes in them too so you can breath fine even if the bandana was sealed air-tight against your fat cheeks!

You are a vulture and the reason that many people are dying - and on top of that you're cheap. If you're going to kill people, at least take out your wallet.

at this point you might be better off assuming you will get exposed to the virus and stay active/healthy/sleep well in order to boost your immune system.
The odds of a COVID-19 particle getting through your bandana are astronomically low. People buying N95 masks are just choosing folk science over real science. Medical professionals and molecular biology PhDs would not be saying this if they didn't believe it was true.

I may be wrong but I think theyre jerry rig tooling facilities to make more

3m was likely making a certain amount a year to keep up with normal demand, the US government just never backed up the reserve it had when it got depleted in the last crisis so when theyre greatly needed 3m just cant pump em out like we want them too. Likely the facilities making them were already running 2 12 hours shifts (i have friends at a 3m plant here and they were manufacturing Swiffer pads 24/6-7 before the covid)

also what the dude above me said

Health care staff are currently cutting up fabric to make masks, or at least being forced to wear the same for a 12 hour shift with covid patients... Just wear a surgical mask to the grocery store and let the people who are most exposed have the best chance at not dying

This whole "save them for the healthcare workers" thing has to be one of the dumbest things to come out of this pandemic.

Are hospitals ordering 10 packs of masks from Amazon? The products from consumer sites are made for consumers. Nurses don't buy their own masks.

Am I missing something?

Not being a selfish idiot is not a decision for consumers to make. I have a really hard time believing I'm competing against a hospital in new York when I'm buying 50 masks from AliExpress.

Yeah it is, and it will help. It won't be as good as the n95, but it will work in a pinch.

Actually I think they are going to Amazon. Hell if hospital nurses are going a whole day with the same mask between patients, I wouldn't be surprised if the procurement department is going through every damn link they can find on Google.

Can you go to a paint shop and buy those paint masks?

Also I feel like people are getting a sense of false security wearing a mask or scarf. I saw a group of kids yesterday all wearing masks but hanging out and not observing the 6ft rule.

Here's the weirdest thing I've seen so far; I was at the grocery store a few days ago and I saw this guy take off his mask, cough and hack into hands, and then he put his mask on :O

WWII

President ask for recycling - entire society starts recycling

President ask for people to buy war bonds - everybody that can afford it buys war bonds

Etc...etc

Today

President ask for people to shelter in place - half the population doesn’t give a single fook

President ask for people not to hoard - Half of society hordes food and toilet paper

President ask for people to conserve N95 masks for healthcare workers - Half the population “where can I get my N95 mask”

This society is split between the “it’s all about me” crowd and the “what can I do to help” crowd..oil and water and it won’t survive for long like this

So look, I'm an actual healthcare worker dealing with a shortage of PPE, and my hospital is certainly not unique. Everyone knew this was going to grow into a global pandemic. Even as you seem to accept N95 masks from miscers, your sticky thread with bodybuilding.com branding still says, "What doesn't help - Face masks" This isn't gloating, this is alarm and concern over your inability to act, take responsibility and walk back your former statements.

Again, the situation changed incredibly rapidly and you as a healthcare worker should know that better than any of us - myself included. It went from a problem in China to a global pandemic in a matter of weeks. My intention in that thread was to help people understand the risksas we knew them at the timeand explain to people not to panic and things like that. I didn't write the thread for my own ego or because I think I'm some super hot sh!t know it all. Most of it is copied and pasted from the CDC, WHO, and other reputable organizations. I created the post with the intent to help people, and I think that's the entire point you're missing. Furthermore, if people are only reading that post for information, that's ludicrous. Every single page I visit online has a huge box at the top of it with info about the coronavirus. So, there is TONS of information out there. A thread on a not highly populated forum is not the end all be all of access to information on Covid-19.

When I try and do something altruistic and people call me out like I'm the devil incarnate for not telling people to wear masks when the CDC didn't tell people to start wearing them until Friday, how does that make me have "an inability to walk back statements" or w/e the f&ck?

If anything, me telling people not to wear masks should havehelped the health care industry by allowing them to get more access to masks by telling the public they were unnecessary. The President himself said he's not going to wear one, so what are people to think?

So, cut me some slack, dude. The text in the first post is full, so I can't add information to it without deleting other info. I might make another post with more information and link to that, but we'll see. Right now, I'm going to leave it as it is. The news should have already let people know that the CDC is recommending everyone wear face masks.

I've got a few people who have generously offered to send me some masks. I'm mainly wanting these for my elderly parents who are at high risk of contracting the virus and as we all know the death rate for the elderly from Covid-19 is especially high.

But thanks for the offer. I'll let you know if the other people don't come through.

People are calling you out like you're the devil incarnate for bringing inaccurate information to your attention? Bro, you cannot be serious. I'm not cutting you any slack at all, there was a perfectly good sticky for any cornoavirus related topics and you chose to lock it and post your own, multiple ones in fact, with the wrong information. Controlling information is your way of dealing with anxiety, I get it.

Let me assist you: Where it says "What doesn't help: Face Masks," you delete "What doesn't help: Face Masks."

That thread was unorganized and full of conspiracy theories and other nonsense. I'm now having to go around and close threads people make where they believe 5G and wifi is the cause of the coronavirus.

Again, do you not understand the meaning of altruism? In an attempt to organize a correct and proper thread from the scientific community with real trustworthy information, you paint me like I'm trying to censor people from discussing that - when I created another completely unmoderated thread for that discussion.

The entire debate about masks boils down to 2 things. First, the CDC initially said the following in their posts about the coronavirus:
CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
Second, this video which includes studies in the description on YT that you can look up and reference yourself explaining my position.

Now, those are the sources I used that hadlegitimate sciencebehind them, and to the best of my knowledge, are what I used to base my judgment on whether or not to wear masks. I included a link to a study someone posted that N95 prevented coronavirus, along with a link to the video which explains a different view point from yours and others. This seemed to cause everyone to get their panties in a serious twist, because any deviation from their way of thinking was tantamount to me telling people to go lick toilet seats.
