Aside from co-workers, I have no idea how much my friends make. They could be millionaires (I'm sure some are) or they could be living paycheck to paycheck (I'm sure some are).

This.

SO much this, especially if you live in areas where people have to show off their status. Binging netflix, eating at ridiculous overpriced restaurants, instagramming themselves at hot spots all in the name of spending significant amounts of money to impress people who they don't even like.

No, I don’t judge people by their salary. If they’re ambitious and down to earth, it’s much better than being around rich pricks.

I started my career as a temp making 15 dollars an hour. Took about 10 years of busting my ass to finally break 100k. Would have been much easier if I wasn’t a dumb **** in college.

Not sure what your definition of wealth is but I’ve been at risk of losing my membership of the law society (equivalent of US bar association) if I am involved in even the slightest unethical, fraudulent, dishonest or criminal conduct, and probably even more restrictions as a result of security clearances since I was in my early 20s.

So plenty of people acquire “wealth” while still abiding by stringent professional and ethical standards

I mean business people.

There are a lot of lawyers and accountants on the take too, bro.

I don't go out of my way to only hang out with folks who make X amount, but being that most of the people I hang out with on a regular basis are also in the local super/exotic car groups, it's pretty obvious that they all do. But that pool of friends and acquaintance net worth ranges anywhere from $300k to $300m+. Another subset are all physicians, so their income ranges from $200k-$900k. Outside of that, I have friends with income ranges >100k, but those are mostly long time/family friends.

The only issue I have when hanging out with my buddies who make a lot less than we do, is that you have to be more careful in conversation. You can't talk about acquiring this or that, about the cost of things, about planning trips, etc. People who make less tend to think that if you talk about hobbies/tech/etc, that are far outside of their economic reach, that you are being condescending or a braggart. An example of this is that I have 2 or 3 friends who are into cars, but don't make much. If we are all talking about our latest car shopping endeavors, recent car mods, or what we've been eyeing recently, they wouldn't be able to relate if I said that I thought car XYZ that I'm considering is a bargain at $250k, because my alternative choice is car ZYX at $400k. So I just have to refrain from really being a part of that conversation. On the other hand, I have buddies who know that if we are all hanging out, it's not at all uncouth to offhandedly mention how we/they should upgrade from this car to that car, because it's only another $80k.

All that said, I don't ask or even care about someone's income level when it comes to making new friends.

It's not about how much you make, it's about what you can show for it. It takes a poverty $100kcel like 10 years to amass $250k. Pathetic, srs.

I just hang out with people I like. Most of them do not make six figures.

The lifestyle I enjoy is more relatable to people making lower incomes. I rent a room in a large house for $450/mo, only wear plain t-shirts and jeans, and generally cheap out on stuff in favor of early retirement.

That's a good mix, and similar to mine. I think in my circle everyone is 'doing well enough' that money 'never comes up'. I don't know about other people, but my parents always taught me that it was crass to bring up numbers:

The best is the rich chicks rocking ferregamo loafers and Pravda glasses making $40k/yr doing more blow than anyone in the washroom of the fanciest clubs on a Saturday night Sucks to suck
And it's crass because the numbers 'say a lot'. Dude I thought we had been over this: relax. Like you said, some people are born with more money than you'll ever have (unless you really dedicate your life to chasing it) so chill. I'm a bespoke suit and vintage Hermes tie crew also but most people (thankfully) can't recognize it. It is normally women, lol, who come up and say 'nice tie' and it'll be a gorgeous lilac gecko Hermes with a white shirt and a custom blue suit from Ozwald Boateng. My point being: I say the names here but most in real life have no idea about what I'm wearing. Get back to your training and you'll already fill your suit better, and stop hanging around the 'blow in the bathroom' types breh. You already developed that rep, remember?

This is why I tend to 'hang out' with friends, where we are in that sort of 'mentor, sharing, happy for each other' group. It's a tightly knit group, and normally when we are in some wider circles like you mention a simple comment like "Well yeah Ari but you own X and Y and bought at a good time" can lead to lame comments or moments. Honestly the topic of money never really comes up in my group: if someone says "buying a new property here" we might discuss expected ROI, but we spend more time discussing the 'fruits'. The happy marriages, adventures in life, sometimes how hard our parents worked and how they 'enjoyed less' and we are so fortunate to be the hedonists we are now. It's not like we sit around doing mutual audits, lol.

Is that an active decision on your part, or perhaps a function of where you live? Not that as we get older we form so many 'close friendships' with random people we meet, but I think meeting up with good friends for dinner parties and some fun games after - some laughs, some drinks, catching up - is 'good for the soul', if you see what I mean. I'm not sure I could achieve that through my 'hobby groups'. I was guilty for a while of being that 'terrible at keeping in touch' guy but I sort of switched by: deleting all social media; and then switching to WhatsApp calls instead of just messages (for friends living a continent away).

Haven't really thought about it. Some of my friends make less and I've been there. Others make 2-3x more than me and I ask them for advice, we can talk about watches and expensive hobbies. I don't judge folks on their income and frankly being in technology I don't have context into other fields that much.

I made a 100k/year up until the Rona (for about 5 years). Friends never changed, in fact my true friends told me I was becoming too money motivated and it was all I talked about. I must have been insufferable.

You have already lost if you think you will benefit from the company of someone else based solely on status or salary.

That will never be a working friendship.

For that reason, I choose/have chosen my friends based on how well we get along. The only boundary there is weeding out those you find super annoying... and they come in all forms.

Only problem with friends who are not in your salary range is arranging certain activities or eating out at certain places that may stretch them out money wise. You have to adjust that accordingly.
