But you can't tell an American to stfu and just lock down for a month to help get things under control so that less people are affected and/or die. They don't give a crap.

A lady I work with has a BIL who had 8 friends go on a trip. They all were supposed to take the Covid test when they came back, but none of them waited the 3 hours to be tested, they all went home. They all got a letter later saying they had tested positive.
A policeman was talking to a guy I know and his daughter was in a wreck caused by a drunk driver, and was ejected. She was laying on hot pavement when EMS showed up and took her temp, it was 102. She later died from injuries and they attributed the death to Covid, which the family is fighting. Americans with some sense can smell a rat. Others like some of my relatives who think they're 'educated' and good citizens, suck in everything they're told and judge others.

Well if we quit talking about Covid and quit testing people who aren't sick and are without symptoms a large portion of our Covid numbers would simply disappear. . 80% Corona cases do not require medical treatment. Frankly, it worked. I know people who have been brainwashed and taken into the Trump cult. They refuse to admit anything he says or has done is wrong. Americans are in a mode of collective denial and fervent anti-intellectualism is the norm. No experts are trusted. False information is spread like wildfire. Socialists have used propaganda to radicalize the left, and the right has fallen under Trump's spell.
The nation is being torn apart by the influence of these two groups. And there is some evidence that China and Russia are behind this disruption. The end result will be a weakened US geopolitically. What that means for the world, I don't know. Perhaps it is better off. But it is certainly infuriating to see the US slide into darkness.
The strategy is exceptionally effective for China and Russia since they control and censor their media. The free information and disinformation hurts us but not them. I don’t think a lot of people think the virus is necessarily a hoax, but they don’t believe the numbers. Per the CDC website, positive antibody testing could result from exposure to a virus in the same family such as then common cold. Many states include the antibody test numbers in their total case numbers. Brb including possible common cold exposures to overall numbers
