...but do ya'll hear yourselves when you say "i'm reserving judgement" on shooting an autistic 13 year old????just lol. Short of them kicking open the door to see him holding an AR or flamethrower what's the justification? 2 grown ass men with tazers, and a baton... "nah fuk that, let's pull the guns out" u w0t m8?

defunding the police is the last thing we should do. we need to double down on training and raising the psychological bar for entry. some of these dudes are thrice baked potatos.

For example, I've heard many people talk about how lacking martial arts training (and even firearms training) is in most police forces. The argument goes that if the officers don't have the skills to subdue a person "peacefully" (with minimum appropriate force, let's say), they're forced to escalate the situation by reacting with deadly force.

I just watched this Jocko Willink clip earlier today and he talks about this very issue. Also, if you listen to the letter that apparently comes from a cop, the cop says that they were, once upon a time, trained to see themselves as "warriors" in the academy and he goes on to complain that now they've become "guardians". To me, that seems wholly appropriate. The job of police is not to be at war with citizens. Isn't it even unconstitutional to deploy the military (excl. national guard) on American soil? It seems like avoiding chaos is one of the reasons that was deemed unconstitutional. A warrior's job is to go to war and kill if he must; a cop's job should be to serve and protect the citizenry. If your cops see themselves as warriors, who do you think they see as the enemy?

Willink vid:
Spoiler!
The “militarization” of police over the past few decades only propagates this. Policies like automatically using a “SWAT” team to serve warrants, including warrants for non-violent offenses, small departments buying quarter million dollar APCs they will never use, issuing literal military gear to officers, etc.

Modern American police can easily be compared to a military force in many ways.

Of course we need the police force, and they need protection from threats they face. What is the balance?

This is exactly what I was wondering. The cops aren't babysitters, they're there to enforce laws and arrest people, why would she call the cops? What did she expect them to do? Rub his belly and pat his bottom?

It's well known that precincts won't hire folks that score too high on intelligence tests because it means they're less likely to tow the line on bad policing and will i stead have critical thinking skills.

Wash out the dumb and ****ty cops and spend the extra money on training good cops. This isn't infantry war. Better to have 500k highly trained, specialized, and intelligent officers than 800k where half are morons and afraid of their own shadow.

Create more funding for departments and pay them better but only take top candidates that are willing to be held responsible.

No immunity BS.

But, but, he might have a weapon!

One of my buddies owned a smoke shop and had his place robbed twice at gunpoint. Wonder how successful his business would've been if he treated every customer like a potential thief/murderer.

This ^ 100%.

Having Autistic kids as well as being married to a LEO, I have so many thoughts on this, but I can’t even put them into words. But everything mentioned by W1LLW is spot on.

What I can say is, what happened to this boy is a real fear parents in the Autism community have. Especially parents of young men.

It's not just a few bad apples. There's tens of thousands of undertrained and egomaniac LEO's running around making the world a worse place. And that's not to even speak on the massive corruption that one commanding officer can instill to a department. Look up Jon Burge. Basically led an off the books task force in Chicago that tortued and killed people in a secret warehouse no one knew about... that's comic book sh!t.

Policing across the country needs a massive overhaul and a ton of retraining, especially in dealing with the mentally ill.

And this is coming from a conservative that believes in heavy policing and supports good cops and thinks BLM is a white funded Marxist movement.

Because he's insecure, srs

His insecurity probably gets hammered every time he gets proven wrong by those guys. He wants to finally get a one-up and he sees this easy lay up.

I'm 50/50 on this,at best. She called 911 because a loved one was having a mental health crisis that was beyond her abilities. That's not just a reasonable thing to do, it's the thing most people would do once they were legitimately frightened for their loved one.

The thing is, they're calling for help, not euthanasia, and think they're going to get a professional who can assist rather than someone for whom "this is also beyond my abilities, but I have a gun".

It wasn't even a generation ago parents told their kids that if you're in any kind of trouble, you find a police officer. That we're now seamlessly moving to "LOL why'd you call the police for help, they're psycho" and think that's normal or OK is a serious problem. Policing only works if people feel comfortable engaging with the police and sharing information about what's going on and this is some incredible self-sabotage within our own institutions.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

I'm on the side of, it's a 13 year old kid.

To the copper saying about the 12 year old with a knife, the police here tackle grown men with knives all the time, without using guns. It's risky as fuk and they put their lives at risk but that is the job they get paid for. I'm not trying to start any "our police are better than yours" bollocks but people with knives can be disarmed without the use of deadly force and that is what they should be doing in certain situations (obviously not all) such as 12/13 year old kids with mental health issues.

Here's one video, there are many. Personally i think the police put themselves in serious risk in this video but it's just an example:

I'm saying when it comes to kids, like the copper itt that mentioned about a 12 year old with a knife, deadly force should not be used (unless there is zero other choice of course). I then posted the video as an example of deadly force not being used against a grown man with a knife.

Edit - And also just to clarify, in situations like the video i posted, i'm not saying deadly force should never be used, in fact i'd say deadly force was justifiable in that specific video.

First of all, this is an off-topic issue but can we stop making GoFundMe's after every fuarkin tragedy? I swear to God this chit is getting annoying. It beats the whole purpose of the tragedy in my eyes.

I've been through the process of being a LEO which is kinda why I'm chipping in. Unfortunately I didn't become one because it's not for me and I'd rather hold an unarmed position as transit security or as a court constable. The process to become a LEO with the RCMP here in Canada is quite simple. If you got two brain cells you can get past the process very quickly. The initial exam is a stupid IQ exam test which in my honest opinion could be changed for something more worth while such as making people write 2-3 paragraphs of 150 words each. You'd basically write why you are applying for this job and why you're a good candidate. It's a better judge of character then a long IQ test with psychological questions. The rest of the process is your average American process. Get email, do this, give said this to recruiter, wait for answer, etc. Get a few folks to talk about you in a positive light and you're in.

Now while I was in the training process, I was mainly observing the folks there. I'm an observant person so I'm always looking and the quality of the cadets was abysmal. It was mainly PTSD riddled soldiers and correctional folks who either had a power-trip going on or they had a desire to be the perfect loyal solder. I'm talking zero free-thinking skills and I got bullied a bit for being the exact opposite. Instructors were also PTSD riddled and took satisfaction in being named by their rank instead of their name. Is this the Army or the Police? Am I going to fight the taliban after this or am I supposed to protect and serve? Training was centered on dealing with the extreme cases and we had our usual liberal training about community policing but that was overshadowed by the self-defense classes and the talks of folks being armed. Every morning we got up at 6-7 am stood guard at a flag and stood in rows like in the army. Basically got trained as if we were in the army. Had inspections from PTSD and power-tripping drill officers who were seriously unapproachable and we ran in orderly fashion or marched to each building.

Now I don't have anything against this training if I was in the fuarkin army. Also while I respect the troops and correctional folks for the job they do, make sure these people aren't riddled with PTSD and power-tripping egos.

What do you get in the end? You get folks who wear a uniform who are not supposed to wear them. A lot of these folks do great things but when faced with extreme cases these dudes resort to extreme solutions. Theres a reason the RCMP is hated in Canada by so many folks. Theres also a reason the turnover is so high. It's treated like a paramilitary organization instead of being a police organization. Police officers are meant to be social workers as well. I never understood why people treat it like it isn't. Hiring brain dead tough guys is the reason we get these events. Instead of taking your knee off of someones upper back you get a dude who sits there like an idiot looking around when the right thing to do is taking your knee off and offering First Aid and arresting the dude later. You get cases where an autistic kids is shot. You get a situation where a RCMP officer punched a native american leader in Canada.

I respect LEO's but seriously the boot licking has to stop. Let's start hiring folks with an actual desire to do good and shift from training soldiers to training social workers with a gun. That's just my two cents. Ill probably catch a few negs but so be it.

People in our country, ostensibly founded on limited government and individual liberty, are so cucked that they'd rather donate their hard-earned money to help people victimized by the government before they'll force their politicians to reform Qualified Immunity so that the public sector leeches who did it are the ones who pay.
