Interesting thread,
I agree with most if not all of what OP is stating.
I grew up and live on a council estate in the top 5% for social deprivation in the country, and 90% of the people i meet day to day have no drive or forward thinking capability.
They blame the government for everything and never on own actions, drink themselves blind and mooch of the state for benefits.
Only people who ever make it are the kids who go to University to get away from the toxic cloud of negativity on the estate.

Yes it’s possible to to “live a good life”.
Some people have more advantages thus increasing the likelihood of said success.
Your choices matter. Your environment matters. Your development from an infant matters. Education matters. People in your life matter. Support systems matter.
It’s possible, but it will take a ton more work for some to get there... Some people are born into great connections, and support systems that will pick them up no matter how much they fall. It isn’t fair, but that’s life.

As a teacher specializing in adaptive behavior, this is the toughest hurdle to get over sometimes.
Even with one of my own kids at home, this was one of the biggest hurdles. Kids inherently understand that if they work really hard at video games, they will get better at them. It doesn’t matter if they need to spend 8, 10, 12 hours a day, they will “work” until they get proficient.
But then they don’t understand why spending an hour in class every day on Algebra work isn’t enough to make them good at it.
Until a person adopts the same mentality towards their algebra that they do towards their video games, they’ll never understand the work ethic that some people put into academics that leads them places others think it’s too difficult to attain.

you can't even talk about homeless issues here because everyone is a ****in sympathizer. but they don't realize that the tax dollars go to them because homeless trash can walk into the hospital and get seen and treated right away and that can be abused because it's covered by the government. i'd like to see the percentage of tax dollars going to homeless people. it's probably way up there. nothing is being done about the homeless issues except more shelters. but there are government programs there to help homeless people find jobs, or get training, or you can literally call up a job agency for warehousing and get a job the next day, homeless people just don't want to do anything.

I don't get how people who are "demoralized" "hopeless" "discouraged" and have "learned helplessness" could possibly know any better. All of those words, by definition, are about people who truly do not have hope since they don't believe in it.
The military talks A LOT about morale and keeping morale up. If it sucks, and people lose hope, the military is in trouble.
I read this military survival guide and it focused almost entirely on psychology and that people can survive anything if they believe.
In one story, a paratrooper was found hanging upside down by a tree and his head was over ants. He took out his gun and shot himself because he figured he was stuck and could not get out and the ants would eat his face.
That's how his body was found.
However, the survival guide noted that he, and all, pilots had a knife they could reach. This guy jumped to the conclusion he was trapped when he could have cut himself down and been okay. But, he jumped to the negative conclusion and shot himself.
All of the stories in this thread are about demoralized poor people.
Poor people are hated by other poor people in our culture and that goes back to Charles Dickens stories. That's what this thread is about.

Interesting thread and I think both sides of the argument have merit. I like the phrase "learned helplessness", it makes a lot of sense. If you've been taught from a child that your choices don't matter, then it's going to be tough to succeed in life. It's true that hard work and good decisions will positively impact your entire life; it's also true that's an overwhelming challenge for most people when they've had a crappy mindset implanted in them and are surrounded by complete losers, thereby lacking role models.
Every time the subject of societies' rejects comes up, there's a dozen posters who say "wellIwould do x, y and z and make it out of there" and that's true, but it's relatively easy for someone with a successful mentality and a bunch of life skills under their belt to bootstrap their way out of a chitty situation. Not so much if you grew up there.

BS. If he had some sort of health condition he wouldn't have been able to join the marines, if he wasn't smart, he wouldn't have gone to yale. For every success story like this there's millions more that ended in failure even if the person worked even harder than the guy in your story. Sure he had a rough childhood, but sometimes having a rough childhood can actually make a person stronger. Let's pretend the guy in the story was some asian/indian american 5'5 manlet with health issues and was below average in brains. He would have been ****ed.

I know what the issue is here!
There are many of us that help other people and try to lift spirits to boost morale and help others succeed. That TAKES WORK and the people who deny that others are sad and lack motivation because they are beat down do not want to do the work to help others. Also, in order to get rid of guilt, they put down sad people as inferior and not worth helping.
So, this is a debate between selfish and selfless people.
It has always been an issue with "peasant" people, which most of us are, that there's a lot of backstabbing and selfishness. Meanwhile, rich people will make their retarded cousin king if necessary.
That's a huge difference between historically poor and rich people. Rich people will hook up perverted, stupid, crazy, lazy, etc relatives and friends but poor people will cut everyone off that doesn't benefit them and live self-centered lives.

I learned English and I had no goddamn choice, lol.
No one has DECIDED helplessness.
Morons like the author don't see that something made him learn something different and he DID NOT have LEARNED Helplessness. He had LEARNED HOPEFULNESS for some reason or another.
I will never forget this one 30 year old study I read from the UK. It focused on populations likely to become criminals and they followed people from childhood into adulthood to see what would happen.
Nearly all of the people who didn't become criminals said they had some role model that made them not want to commit crimes. It could be someone they didn't even really know like neighbor they thought was nice. Also, many people had fictional heroes and they could see themselves committing crimes because of that hero. So, the result was that positive role models can help stop criminal behavior.
A person does not choose to do negative things, they think they are positive. A person who does positive does them because they learn the difference between positive and negative at some point in their life, and believed it.
So, this author and his ideas lack INSIGHT and he doesn't even know what makes him tick or others.
Another issue I have with this type of thinking it----not everyone can go to Harvard. Not everyone can have a professional job, etc. This is a constant, and moronic, "Republican" idea in the US. We have a pyramid society and there MUST be people on the bottom and they ARE GOING TO BE BLOCKED FROM MOVING because the structure of society cannot be inverted.
It is moronic to the extreme to think everyone can be you.
This dude should have learned "arguments" at Yale law School because he is promoting ideas Argumentum Ad Absurdum covers. That is, what if everyone does something you propose and how will it turn out. If it does not turn out well, your point is stupid.

In my case if i knew that earlier I would make it years ago.
So **** you.
Struggling is part of grind.

this is weird boomer handwaving of legitiamte issues. without god, you get nihilism. incel theory is not wrong, when it comes to looks. you need to acknowledge the conditions before you participate or youre being a naive fool

I’m not reading all of that. If you have the sense to know what you want, and the stones to get it, you don’t need to sit around listening to thesis after thesis of what you should have started yesterday. There’s no epiphany, or magic formula that some grandstanding prick can offer you which will turn things around in your direction. Do what you have to do, start now, and have the guts to follow through with it.

I grew up pretty poor, came from a third world country, moved to the ghetto once in the US and grew up in said ghetto. One day I just decided enough was enough, I was tired of being broke, of having a shytty studio, a shytty car, etc. The opportunities are there for anyone who wants them.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I give point by point explanations and they are logical, so they actually are intellectual.
Please look up words, and stuff.
Also, what I'm saying isn't THAT amazing. I am literally reporting that words for having no believe exist because some people have no belief left. As I noted, the military is extremely concerned about "troop morale" in bad situations and they aren't "lying" about it.
If warriors can suffer low morale (look the word up!) then average people in crap situations from birth certainly can.

also being a former warehouse supervisor for two huge companies in charge of many different teams of temporary workers from agencies of all backgrounds... my mind was blown on how many people refuse to do a simple warehouse job correctly. they won't do it lol. like if you tell someone, put the cases on the back of the skid, so many people are so lazy they won't even follow that simple task. which is why it was so easy for me to become a supervisor, all i had to do was do things correctly 100% of the time, try my best, and be good with people. anyone can do it cause there's a lack of people skills in the manual labour industries.
There is only one Hell: the one we live in now.

I don't think it's as easy as some people make it out to be, but this is just my opinion. When you grow up in an environment where education isn't valued (both at home and at school) with your siblings/peers selling drugs, working low wage jobs, finding ways to take shortcuts in life, etc., it's very hard to crawl out of that mentality because you have no positive influences in your life. Without any good influences, how does someone from age 0-18 (being extremely impressionable as kids) find the resources and motivation to make something of themselves? I think it really takes a lot of grit and dedication to be dealt a bad hand in life but still find success in the end. Not impossible, but very hard.
