Working class/poor mentality and the beliefs you have about choice
We all know that most of the Misc is 10k CEO’s, so if that’s you, this post isn’t for you. It’s for the nihilistic incel types who blame everybody else for their troubles.
I'm just finishing this book I got for Christmas called Hillbilly Elegy, which I understand has a Netflix movie associated with it. I guess I should mention spoilers ahead in case you plan to read/watch and don’t want to know about it. The man who wrote the book grew up essentially as “poor white trash” as people in the suburbs would probably call them. His mom was a drug addict alcoholic who abused and neglected the kids. They hopped around from stepfather to stepfather and were essentially raised by hillbilly (his words, not mine) grandparents. But the author persevered, joined the Marines, and eventually went to Yale and graduated from Yale Law School.
The reason I’m bringing this to you Misc is because (not to insult anyone here dead srs) the author connects the failures of 99% of the people he grew up around with learned helplessness, something I tried to educate the Misc about many times (with varying success). As the author puts it, learned helplessness is when a person “believes that the choices you make have no effect on the outcomes of your life.” He associates this mentality closely with the “white working class” (code for poor people who buy lottery tickets) and says that if he could teach people from that culture one thing it would be that your choices do matter and they have a lasting impact.
I’m kind of excited to watch the movie now but I already heard it’s not as good as the book, so I’m not holding my breath.

-You control how you respond to the events in your life
-Your choices matter
-Start making positive choices and getting some wins under your belt. That will build your confidence until you become competent.
-Stop blaming others. The deck is not stacked against you. You can make your life significantly better if it’s not good now.

It is better to imagine Sisyphus as happy.
If you believe you have no control over your own life, your existence is pointless. Better to believe everything is under your control, and struggle to make things happen, and even if they don't, be content that you struggled.

The deal is that if you LEARNED helplessness----that's what you LEARNED.
I learned English and I had no goddamn choice, lol.
No one has DECIDED helplessness.
Morons like the author don't see that something made him learn something different and he DID NOT have LEARNED Helplessness. He had LEARNED HOPEFULNESS for some reason or another.
I will never forget this one 30 year old study I read from the UK. It focused on populations likely to become criminals and they followed people from childhood into adulthood to see what would happen.
Nearly all of the people who didn't become criminals said they had some role model that made them not want to commit crimes. It could be someone they didn't even really know like neighbor they thought was nice. Also, many people had fictional heroes and they could see themselves committing crimes because of that hero. So, the result was that positive role models can help stop criminal behavior.
A person does not choose to do negative things, they think they are positive. A person who does positive does them because they learn the difference between positive and negative at some point in their life, and believed it.
So, this author and his ideas lack INSIGHT and he doesn't even know what makes him tick or others.
Another issue I have with this type of thinking it----not everyone can go to Harvard. Not everyone can have a professional job, etc. This is a constant, and moronic, "Republican" idea in the US. We have a pyramid society and there MUST be people on the bottom and they ARE GOING TO BE BLOCKED FROM MOVING because the structure of society cannot be inverted.
It is moronic to the extreme to think everyone can be you.
This dude should have learned "arguments" at Yale law School because he is promoting ideas Argumentum Ad Absurdum covers. That is, what if everyone does something you propose and how will it turn out. If it does not turn out well, your point is stupid.

You could look into forgetting about tinder and other vacuous means of seeking a relationship through internet and focus on other things instead. You could look into educating yourself by reading books, being smart with your finances, working out mindfully(counting calories, following Schoenfelds and Israetels advice on hypertrophy) and improving your life to live more meaningfully. You feel like you're stuck but self pity or being in an echo chamber of chads are the only people whose life is worth living won't do you any good.
Learned helplessness is repetitive thoughts of only chads get girls. Improve yourself in other ways and you might surprise yourself.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I think a lot of people just get beaten down and only experience failure again and again.
They start believing that failure is the norm for them.
It happens so much that they start to think "What's the point? It's just going to end like it always does."

As a teacher for a lot of students who live in poverty you bring up some important issues. Obviously most can’t go from drop out to Yale or something like that, but getting them to understand that they CAN make it better, even if it’s not some insane jump is very tough. Part of the issue with children and especially children living in poverty is that they do not think about the future as something that is important, they live in the now and create major issues for themselves in the future.

I've seen this type a lot in the Dirty South, both black and white.
They are always addicted to nicotine and alcohol as well as pot and ***** sometimes and are making payments on everything and never save a dime.
Slutty daughters from a young age is always an indicator, too. White trash people I know are putting their 13 year old daughter on birth control.
They live for the moment and never consider the past or future.

The only true way to grow is to genuinely realize you aint chit and any one 9including you) can be dropped with one bullet at anytime...
Knowing that suddenly makes everything appear very clear, the playing field very even, and all your choices and words carry weight. If you can't come to peace with the above... you'll never grow, go anywhere, or be successful (whatever you definition of success is).

At best, most work hard and live hand to mouth as literal slaves for a corporation. At worst, they wind up dead or in prison. Either way no one gives a fukk. A few make it out, largely due to innate profitable talent, luck, and work ethic. Most don't. And hey, if you want to make it in this world, you have to go to our schools, wagecel for our companies, hope everything pans out perfectly, and MAYBE you get a seat at the table before you die.
Even the way we talk about them - "these people are helpless because they learned it from all the other deadbeat helpless people around them." How quick are you going to be to leave your comfort zone and sign up for a life of (more) hardship? Or are you going to disengage and try to enjoy whatever small pleasures are still available to you?

well what are your barriers to employment. assuming ur on this side of the world, or even if ur in the UK.. i can't take any homeless person in the western world seriously when jobs are plentiful available. it's not like countries where there are literally no jobs. some countries literally do not have warehousing or retail/fast food jobs available. they would kill to have a warehousing or factory job. i have post-concussion syndrome and I can find a ****ing job. i can barely ****in see properly. i worked with people with developmental disabilities. deaf, blind, people with severe ADHD, are ****in working.I've been homeless for four years. You can't tell me chit about "life".
what the **** are homeless people in the west excuses for not being able to make an income to afford rent. homeless people on this side of the world are pathetic, with all the jobs available. can't work at mcdonalds or amazon or factories or construction labour or something? thousands of warehouse jobs available.
i seen this homeless guy AMA on reddit in my city. he answered all the questions except "what are your barriers to employment" which had like 20 upvotes. there's no excuse to being homeless other than being a lazy ****er. i literally can't think of any excuse to not being able to make a living on this side of the world, when there are so many jobs available, even among disabilities, people with serious disabilities still work.
i worked with this guy in the summer, who was born deaf, small in size, probably 3'5 feet tall, his leg grew backwards and his spine grew abnormal, he takes massive painkiller pills, worked with him in a production facility in the summer, he works hard as ****. and there's like grown adult men with no health conditions holdin a ****in cup on the street, sleeping on pavements, so pathetic. and it's all white people, over here at least.
There is only one Hell: the one we live in now.
