I dont think it makes any difference to me whether its glorified or not (not 100% sure, I havent really put much thought into it)
They way I look at it, as long as that mentality is not in my children's thoughts, my wife's thoughts, my immediate family, friends, etc.....what do I care if someone else wants to just coast in life?

Sure I get that my tax dollars would be better served improving infrastructure, etc....but I chose to live in an un annexed portion of a very large city so I can ensure a lot of my taxes do go towards that infrastructure, high quality police force, fire department, waste services, schools etc.

Understood. And since you wouldnt likely ever cross paths, its fascinating to me to understand how OP goes about his day, why he chooses to do what he does, how he survives and what makes him "tick".

Thats the thing, my father taught me very early on. Time is the resource you will never get back. Its funny how people put things like money in such high regard but are ok with pissing away time like its nothing.

Agreed but this is a forum and OP chose to create a thread glamouring certain behavior and he met some critique.

I would go as far as saying that IF we want our loved ones to be protected from such a mindset, then we cant just rely on telling them whats wrong and what isnt. Society as a whole must change if we truly want to protect our loved ones as people are influenced by not only their families but by the society they live in.

My kids are 5 and 7. The lessons about mindset start i believe as early as 2 or maybe even earlier.
We live in a very comfortable part of town. So that they can get a broader view of how people live, i often venture out of our "bubble" and take them across various parts of the city (we live in a very large and diverse city)

The other day my kids were slacking off in BJJ. not focused. Jacking around. Not applying the teachings from the professor.
Right after this, i drove them straight to the roughest part of town. We had lunch in that neighborhood. They got to see how other people live. I told them their decisions to work hard, focus, apply themselves, etc (or not) will typically be reflective on the living conditions you get. Sure society will influence my kids, but I am doing everything I can to ensure I influence them more and they use the influence from society as additional perspective. Not THE perspective. And even then, they are in top rated schools, are surrounded by super positive influencers (business partners, BJJ black belts, ex professional soccer and football players). They already manage their own spending money, are learning what interest and credit is, etc.

Im thinking about having them start their own business soon. A vending machine they can put in my buddy's gym. Ill start by giving them a "loan" on the vending machine and some inventory. We can work to decide what to put in the machine. What sells. What doesnt. They will then need to use their earnings to get more inventory if they want to keep the vending machine alive, etc. Just an idea but I think it will teach the right things to an 8 year old.

Hard work to them is the norm. There are no ribbons handed out for working hard in my house.

Ask your kids about the drive to the hood from last week and when they say they remember with a big smile on their face then you'll know all you did was pat them on the back for being lazy in BJJ cause all they experienced was another loving ride with pops. Next time kick them out of the car and force them to wipe down some windows at the stoplight if you really wanna teach them hard work

Bro trust me....there is a modality of teaching for every circumstance. Im still learning "how to be an effective parent". It definitely was not a "loving ride". Kids are smarter than you think. They understand demeanor, tone of voice, etc. I spank my kids. They have their chores. They put in physical work. But sometimes "getting to them" from my experience is not always about the physical aspect.

Do you think its just "luck" that some kids are high achievers and some are not? I am in the camp to that believes that your parent's involvement is a major factor in your future. (of course there are outliers)

Addictions mostly but for those that aren't, it's not very hard to live the life. Most mail go through electronically, gyms provide shower, and storage can be put in your trunk.

Growing up was fine but at 18 **** hit the fan, dads out of the game. I look up to my mom. My dad used to cheat on my mom with dudes. One of his butt-buddies grabbed his ass as a joke one time and I think it was the first time I ever heard his real laugh
