Let's say you look at shares of the MISC, and believe it will tank in the next month. You go to your friend (who owns MISC shares) and say "Listen buddy, let me borrow your 100 MISC shares, and I will sell them immediately. In a month, I will buy them back from the market and return them to you (in other words, you're borrowing his investment to make a gamble/bet). Your friend agrees to this, and allows you to borrow the shares. To make things simple, each MISC share = $1. You sell all shares for $100.
In a month time, now you owe your friend his 100 MISC shares back. As you predicted, you notice the market tanked, and each MISC share =$0.50. So you buy 100 shares back for $50. You hand him back the 100 shares you paid $50, and retain the other $50 that you made off your bet. You made money, and your friend is probably upset he's holding something (MISC shares) worth less.
-----
Going back to this hedge fund example, the Hedge Fund decided to game the market by entering into this short for GME (borrow GME shares from someone, sell them, and buy them back later) at a low price, let's say $4/share for GME (an example). Redditors interfered when they heard this, and bought up the GME shares ASAP, driving up its value/price to $80/share (also an example). When the Hedge Fund has to return all the shares, they are now going to have to pay $76/share for GME.
Hedge Funds are huge, so they aren't buying 100 shares, they are buying in the thousands/millions. So essentially, they will be paying millions/billions just to return the shares to whoever they made this agreement with.
Let me know if I can make it any clearer.

I got in around $39. Really happy so far, keeping my eye on it hard as apparently the big squeeze hasn’t even happened yet? Makes me wish I had bought more shares
WSB is so entertaining.

The price cranks up. Look at VW back in 08, they did something similar to this.
Can the hedgefund make a comeback if reddit runs out of steam or are they fukked?

From the incremental large sells, looks like the short sellers are continuing to try and drive prices down. Its a battle of will, folks holding the stocks vs billionaire hedge funds shorting it. If the hedge funds outmuscle the retails with more shorting, they could drive out the scared longs.
HOLD YOUR GROUND LONGS!!! A lot of the price drops in GME and other stocks in this short squeeze are short sellers entering into new positions.
I have shorted stocks before. It basically makes your balances go negative, like you own -50 shares. Then later you have to buy to replace those (that you "sold" at whatever short sell position you entered into). You hope the price is lower so your cost is less than the initial sell

Just hold. No need for a stop loss that’s ridiculous. Ultimately, it’s which side runs out of capital first.
My bet is that the buyers will win, ultimately. More hedge funds may well get involved and get annihilated, depending on the contract dates, fun times.

GME was an awesome play - will not deny that. But also just a first strike, a Pearl Harbor type move. But got news for you boyo, Reddit is Japan in this situation. They may have capitol but they don’t have nearly the organization one would think, especially with every individual wanting to get out when the money is good.
Holding GME or buying it now is an idiot play. Just look at all the dolts who lost a fortune yesterday

Can someone with some knowledge on the topic answer a few questions for me for reps?
1) is there any benefit of having done this to the hedge fund other than simply sticking it to the man? What I mean is there any extra financial gain? Couldn’t they have ran up the value on any stock even one without the short positions?
If so this was more of a “stick it to the man, while also making a bunch of money by driving the price up”?
2) wouldn’t this level of collusion be illegal?
Thanks

the key thing here is they ran up the stock of which was heavily shorted by Melvin Capital. Melvin essentially borrowed the shares, sold them, and then when the price went up, they needed to buy back the shares to cover the short position with their share lenders. But the redditors refused to sell, causing the price to skyrocket, and forcing Melvin to urgently need to buy EVEN more shares (it just snowballs from there). Also likely they were naked short selling which means never owned or intended to own the underlining share in the first place (which is actually illegal now but hard to prove/regulate). If you can identify a short squeeze candidate, its actually a great investment because the price will increase exponentially when the short sellers rush to cover the position.
2) wouldn’t this level of collusion be illegal?
its a grey area but hard to regulate since its all publicly shared by anonymous users
Thanks

I called it to sell an hour before it plummeted 50% yesterday, now I’d buy in with what I could afford to lose and smile about it whatever happens. No one ‘knows’ where this ends up but I think redditors will win

Unless you are literally betting your house on something, stop losses are just a psychological ploy to get you to throw money away. Who profits? Wall Street, the guys you’re trying to take down

Since the March crash, WSB has gained an insane amount of new members (at least doubled), and it became more and more common for "meme" stocks to get a pump from hype and people would make some decent money. As this continued through the summer, articles started to surface about hedge funds combing WSB for tips on hot/meme stocks. ded.fukn.srs...
I believe that groups saw the power potential of 2million retards with access to money, and made coordinated efforts to infiltrate the sub and get pumps going on their desired positions.
Think about it, if on the low end you have 2 million people with a willingness to drop $1k, that's a 2 billion dollar pump. You can make damn near any stock move significantly.
Now GME has been talked about for a while, more so as a joke, but when michael burry went balls deep in them in the summer, it started to make a lot of sense. This is the guy that is a focal point of The Big Short. He wasn't investing because he thinks they're legit. No. He invested because they were so insanely shorted, and it was only a matter of time until shorts have to cover, and thus drive the price up.
This was a signal to people to get in on this, basically following him, but how can you make the most of this aside from just sitting and waiting? You enlist the assistance of 2.4 million autist cucks. This wasn't about "sticking it to the man" this was about going past the moon and colonizing mars (sorry black brahs). Continued support is achieved by adding the "fukk the man" aspect to it.
"It won't get better, just different."

Low market cap DEFI projects might be the big money makers.
Some people are shilling to dump, some people are shilling after grabbing a bag. You need to come to your own conclusion, and not just blindly trust...
^^^ Funny brah with miscer energy on Twitter, who talks about crypto.
Note: Low market cap investing is high risk investing. Proceed with caution.
