As long as you don't bring the misc with you that is lol.. There are these annoying ass car commercials on the radio here that you can't escape from, so I posted a thread once and said "Lets all have a meetup downtown and then go beat the shiit out of Jay Gilstrap!"

And that was followed by 49 posts from a bunch of city-data Karens all calling me a psychopath and threatening to report me to the police. Thread was deleted and I got a week ban lol.

I have never lived in the NE but I spent 10 years in Michigan. My parents live in Myrtle Beach and I have lived in Spartanburg, Greenville and Columbia. I've also spent a bit of time in Charleston and Florence. I'm in Virginia Beach now because I prefer to be closer to the water, even if it means a little further drive to get to the mountains. One of the things I liked about Greenville was its proximity to get to some other places around you. You aren't stuck in Greenville, you can experience other cities without a ton of effort. Asheville is a short drive north, so you can go experience it without having to live there...then retreat back to your safe space. Charlotte is another one that's a decent drive time away. Extending a little further you can get to Tennessee with a little more drive time, and that state is beautiful. Going south you can hit up Georgia and get into Atlanta or somewhere like Augusta if that's more your speed. I loved Augusta when I visited there. If you are really feeling froggy, you can be down in Jacksonville, Florida in about 5 hours. When I lived in Columbia (about an hour east of Greenville) me and my wife made a weekend trip where we hit up Augusta (GA), then Savannah (GA), then circled around to Hilton Head (SC) and then finished with dinner in Charleston (SC) before going back home.

I think you are going to love it. My word of caution kind of relates to what the poster below you said with "Woodruff road is a nightmare!" I used to be in a position where I could leave work early (from Greer) and it would be a 20-25 or so minute ride to Woodruff Road where there was a bar I liked to frequent (Carolina Ale House). If I would have left work at 5 like a normal person, that same trip would take me over an hour. The traffic is absolutely jam packed.

Is there anything you missed about Michigan?

What about Texans though?Also curious because I spent about 5 years in MI.

Charleston will be too hot and also the schools don't look as good from what I see.

Anderson is not that bad. Every city has its bad areas but Anderson is a drop in the bucket compared to the size of Greenville. Personally, not a fan of Greenville traffic and the city life but I enjoy going there every once in a while for dining/entertainment.

How is employment opportunity? Im good but wife will have to quit her job to come.

The economy here has been legit booming for several decades. BMW and Michelin have been really happy here, so over the years tons of other foreign companies and businesses set up shop here as well.. Lots of manufacturing, but several hospitals around with lots of health care jobs too - all just depends on what she does.

Ok it sounds like there would be more access to jobs there for her than here. I'm in a rural/suburb pretty far away from anything.

Did a lot of reading on city-data. Seems like a good choice. I'll have to get down there soon.

SC is a weird place. They act different. I was born in Greenville, near Paris Mtn, and even though we moved when I was 1 years old, people seem to reconize that I'm from there when I've been there. Odd, right? However, they treat outsiders differently, and know when your from outside of there. Just saying, they are a melting pot that melts lumpy.

They were the first state to succeed and the last to rejoin. Get to know them and you'll understand.

Seriously? I was born and raised in NC and didn't move here until ~20 years ago, and I never felt that.. At least in Greenville. I felt at home here since day one.

That said though, I've found the people in Spartanburg to be a little clannish and "cliquey."

And it is odd because from online research I thought that the property taxes were lower, but then I read it is 6% for second homes and 4% for primary residence? Also 7% income tax.

Is it really overcast and rainy a lot of the time? I prefer my rain in short stretches - I like plants, but I get blue when the sun doesn't shine for long spells. The darkness of the MI winter bothered me and the length, more than the cold and snow.

My family lives there, I moved to Denver. about three years ago but wouldn't necessarily mind going back. I spent most of my life in that general area and Columbia for college. Fast growing area, my brother's house went up about 50% in value in the past couple years. Downtown was nice last time I went but that was several years ago and as a family man you probably don't care, though it's a pretty area to walk around. The public education in South Carolina is atrocious, unless things have turned around a lot South Carolina is bottom three in education or so. Didn't run into a ton of leftists/liberals in the area. People are friendly, at least superficially so. Anything in the general Simponsville/Greenville/Greer/Taylors area is probably around the same.

Location-wise, you're in a great area to access Charlotte, Charleston, and Atlanta within a couple hours. Charleston is a pretty GOAT location.

Don't particularly recall it being rainy. Summers are hot af but that's the south for you. Hard to tell though since what I consider normal is based off that area in the first place.

Huh, those numbers sound impossible. Every house on Zillow ive seen says like 1000-3000 in property taxes, even the ones up to 700k. Also a 7% income tax? Do you mean sales tax in the city limits or something?

While the state as a whole has sub standard public education, it seems that area I am looking at in particular is just as good as where I am coming from per GreatSchools ratings. (7 to 8 rating)

I'll take superficially friendly over the in your face rudeness here any day. The constant tension around this area is wearing on us.

It's not overcast a lot, it just rains at least a few times a month.

There's also hurricane season, so a few times a year you'll have days in a row of rain/ storm. Pretty sunny most of the time.
Coworker of mine from Boston said it the him off when people were calm in situations he expects them to get riled up in. Seems like people have to have a thick skin up there, and not just for the cold.

Thing is though no place on earth is perfect, and we have our share of scum just like anywhere else. California people won't hesitate to brag about their perfection, but I legit thought Hollywood was the most depressing place I'd ever seen in my entire life..

San Francisco has a fuking app you download to keep you from stepping in shiit, and a "poop patrol" to clean it up. So.... if you're looking for imperfections, you can usually find them.

Mentioned already, but traffic on Woodruff Rd is a nightmare of epic proportions. One road - maybe 4-5 miles or so, and it was not well planned at all. I read once that there are over 80 restaurants in a two mile stretch of it.. Then you add in everything else.. Big box stores, small businesses, schools, convenience stores, etc. Not a good time.

A lot of religion, with churches literally everywhere. I'm not religious, but it doesn't bother me... For some people though it's fingernails on a chalkboard.

And with all the growth, it is starting to get big city problems.. Crime is becoming more noticeable and frequent on the news. And traffic around other parts of town is starting to get bad. Nowhere near as bad as Woodruff Rd, but worse than it used to be...

Dude was right about the state tax, 7% for high income bracket. Well that's a huge bummer. Essentially would be a wash though, because property taxes are higher here.

I had someone tell me something similar when I moved to Columbia. I'm not sure what people are expecting if they don't live in a city with millions of people. I spent 9 years in Louisiana where it was ridiculously "cliquey." It didn't matter how long you lived there, if you weren't born and raised there you would never be considered one of them. I remember having a conversation with someone who made a reference to someone else we knew. She said something like "I like him even though he's not from here." I asked how long the person had lived here, and she said "its probably 20 or so years now." I was like WTF? It was definitely a big reason why I left. They were so cliquey that they parsed up what part of town you were from like it was a different city. If you were from a different city, that was looked at like you were from a different state. I chit you not when I say that our construction laborers wanted per diem to go 45 minutes over to the next city to work. Leaving their little bubble wasn't something they'd ever really done before.If you think Charleston is too hot but you are thinking about moving to Greenville, I've got some bad news for ya! My best piece of advice I give to "yankees" trying to move south is to change your yankee drinking habits. Alot of people in the north drink a ton of coffee, soda and gatorade and not alot of water. That doesn't work in the south. You have to hydrate, and you need to limit things like soda and gatorade that dehydrate you. When I wake up in the morning I immediately drink a few cups of water to pre-hydrate for the day. If you wait until later in the day when the sun is beating down on you, its already too late. If you have trouble drinking enough straight water, you can mix tea into your daily routine.The only things I miss about Michigan are nostalgia type things from having lived there. So a bar I used to hang out at, or a park I've played basketball in...that type of stuff. I have zero desire to ever live there again. The thing I hated the most about Michigan was the dreariness. When you live there you kind of get used to it, but when you live somewhere else it kind of makes you realize how few actual "nice" days there are there. And by "nice" I mean sunny with a decent temperature. If its sunny and hot, that kind of sucks. If its sunny and cold, that definitely doesn't qualify as a nice day. Where I lived it was just naturally gloomy and overcast nearly every day. I also hated what happened when it rained. It would rain and drizzle all frickin day, then you'd have to spend the next few days splashing around in the puddles it created. What I love about the south is how much more often the rain just hits you...gets over with...the sun comes back out...and then you go about your business with the puddles drying up within hours.

The people were also different, and not in a good way. I love how hard people up there worked and how professional you get treated. But other than that, they aren't as friendly and open as in the south. If I was walking down the sidewalk and I was about to pass a white lady in Michigan, she would magically find something else to look at when we passed by eachother (look away, look down at cell phone, etc). I don't mean that to be a race thing towards me, because if you watched her pass by a white guy further up the street she'd do the same thing. I didn't even realize it until I got to the south. Then white ladies would look me dead in my eye and speak to me as we passed by each other. In the right situation, they would even start up full blown conversations that Michigan ladies would avoid even interacting with you.
