Greenville, SC (and suburbs)

Married with a kid now who will start 1st grade next Fall.

Looking to make a big change, moving from the Northeast to SC. Visited back in college, remember loving the city. Went to school down south, so I know many of the cultural differences already.

I am just tired of the Northeast. People's attitudes, the weather, insane SJW crap infecting schools. I was forced to put my son in catholic school and I am not even religious. Doesn't seem like there are many catholic schools down south, so was looking at public. Will public school down there be just as insane as it is up in N.E?

Anyone familiar with the area and surrounding suburbs? What to avoid? I am just looking at surrounding suburbs and sorting based off school rating.

Greenville came to mind because it's going to be warm, but still have 4 seasons and seems to be up and coming pretty fast in terms of development and economy. Close to mountains, close enough to beach, probably not insanely conservative but certainly not insanely liberal (I hope).

Prisma Health is THE health care provider there. I'd recommend the Premier EPO plan but the Consumer HD plan has its benefits too.

For instance you can only visit Cigna contracted providers if you're under the Consumer High Deductible plan.

Greer and Powdersville are both very nice - although if I had to choose between the two I'd pick Greer. It's a little closer to downtown Greenville, and the downtown area of Greer itself is really nice...

Maybe that doesn't appeal to you though, and you want some "elbow room?" Powdersville is more out in the country and you will be able to get a nice sized house on a couple of acres easily.

I don't have kids, so I can't comment on the schools though...

Areas to avoid would be the Berea area, and the west side of Greenville along the White Horse Rd area..

Taylors and Simpsonville are suburbs of Greenville, and you can't go wrong with either one of those.. Taylors is actually pretty much indistinguishable from the rest of Greenville IMO.. only difference is a zip code.

North of Greenville is Travelers Rest.. Maybe 20 minutes from downtown. It's right at the base of the North Carolina mountains and is most convenient if you like the outdoors.. Hiking, camping, mountain biking, etc.. All right at your fingertips. Plus the downtown area of TR is also really cool.

And downtown Greenville is world class. Tons of fine dining, shopping, cool bars and coffee shops - all up and down main street. In fact there's a waterfall right off main street and they've built an epic park around it!

I've done work all around the country which brings me to some shady areas and I don't think I've ever felt more surrounded by meth heads than when I was in SC.

I can only give a broad general answer as I was just offered a position in Greenville. Its a nice city with low crime and Ive only ever heard good about it from those who live there.

Poinsett Highway is a shiithole... Used car lots, pawn shops, and check cashing places for a couple of miles.

But I've seen people judge the entire area off that one stretch.. like "Man Greenville is depressing AF! I drove down Poinsett Hwy and saw it!"

Thanks but it wouldn't make sense to go to Asheville given what I am fleeing up here. Though I suppose with how things have been trending, there's no real escaping it. Then again, I think "liberal" in the south is different from "liberal" up here in the north.

Asheville is Hipster mecca.

You can't sling a dead cat in Asheville without hitting a healing crystal shop, or two enormous bull dykes making out in broad daylight. Tourism based economy, expensive to live there, and tough place for a career oriented person to make a living.

I live a couple counties north of Greenville. It is a nice area but I'd stay away from Anderson; I always hear about crime there in the news. The entire upstate is pretty conservative but inside the city you will find your usual Karen type liberals who think they know how to run your life better than you. Spartanburg county has some decent places to live and is growing like crazy. They have an awesome Sheriff who puts up with zero nonsense from the BLM and antifa types.

Industry keeps moving in and growing the area. You have large ones like BMW, Michelin, Bosh, Samsung, etc and they keep the school systems flush with cash.

As far as schools go, Greenville county has some really good schools. My wife visited one downtown that was an elementary school that was completely focused on engineering. The lego robotics team had their own 3 d printer that they used to make parts they needed. The Governors school for arts and humanities is also located near Falls Park.

Asheville is chit. I still have property up there but I can't stand the area. Too many militant liberal antifa types and Karens. Back in the day when it was the cool hipppies that just wanted to smoke dope was the best time. Now it's just transplants and feaks.

No idea on Greenville but I wish people would stop moving out of the Northeast. We need as many sensible people as we can get, otherwise our fate is California. Truthfully, we’re not far from declining as far as they have.

But honestly, the Northeast is such a special place. There’s nothing like it in the U.S. We have the best world class cities, incredible architecture, historic, walkable downtowns with beautiful suburbs and breathtaking natural scenery, everything is interconnected by trains, our culture is deep and unique, people proudly express their heritage, we have the best food, the most respected museums, the most authentic attitudes. Frankly, our public schools are far better as well. I love to travel, but I have never felt more at home than when I’m in the northeast. NE cities feel like the major leagues. The south is like AA.

Come on, man. I completely understand why you feel this way. The snow kinda sucks, the taxes are high and there are SJWs in the schools, but there are SJWs everywhere. There are probably more of them out west and a growing number in southern cities. Demographic shifts are just going to follow you down south because that’s where everyone and their mother is also moving to. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

I like downtown Greenville, a lot of nice places to eat and drink. Not a bad place to be.

But yeah I agree with above poster about Anderson. Greenville beats Anderson in every way.

Yeah when I was looking on Zillow in Anderson area, I noticed the home prices differed drastically just based on a few miles. That's usually not a good sign, so I stopped looking there.

We will checkout Spartanburg area when we visit too, great to know about the Sheriff.

I can't stress enough to stay the phuck away from Anderson. Also, you mentioned Catholic schools. There are at least three that I know of in the area.

I'd take Charlotte or Ashville over Greenville just for stuff to do.

Rock Hill or York County is still South Carolina if you are worried about taxes, but you are in the right area. Goldilocks climate, beach, mountains....das it mane.

The Sheriff is legit GOAT, no joke.

Spartanburg itself though, is.... meh. For a long time Sburg has resisted change of any kind because they didn't want to be like Greenville. They thought they were holding on to their "old south" charm by not changing, but unfortunately after several decades it became run down and depressing IMO.

They are just now starting to gentrify, and it's beginning to come around, but it still has a ways to go. That said though there are some very nice areas around it. Inman and Landrum are out in the country - as in horse pastures, and are very nice.

And somebody told me recently that Byrnes High School in Duncan was world class, so maybe give that some thought.

Yeah I know the grass isn't always greener and I am welcoming opposing viewpoints for sure. Moving is a big deal, especially this far. I am in Bucks County, PA which is a beautiful area. We generally like it here. The nice part of the county is all preserved farmland and parks. I love open space and I have it here already. Half the house is paid off and I could be unemployed for like 4 years before it became an issue, my overhead/bills/etc are that cheap. I've put myself in a really good position to retire early if I don't do anything.

With that being said, we've been talking about upgrading the home for a couple years now. Just lacking space. Yeah we can renovate and create the office we need, fix the backyard, etc but that's 100k. Upgrading to a different home here to what we need in the same nice area = 700-800k.

The other issue is the public schools are already teaching 7 year olds BLM and how whites are inherently racist. This is a cancer that is spreading. It may be unavoidable though like you say. We do like our Catholic school so far and it seems great, but I know Catholic schools are generally behind public schools in pure academics like Math/Science, so it's like you can't win.

Charlotte and Asheville are shut down.....nothing to do there now. Charlotte is fun when it's open. Asheville is just dirty and circling the drain. York has some nice schools. My son ran some cross country meets out there last year.

Step one is realizing that even if you personally don't have faith, there is a larger social good served in fostering the institution of organized religion. Also Greenville is a great area, but don't send your kid to public school.

Just to give you an example; our house is ten years old. It is 2800 square feet, brick, 1 acre and an in ground pool. Cost was $249K and my taxes are $1k a year and that includes trash pick up

I personally know our school superintendent and while he isn't as conservative as me, he shuts down teaching the race crap. He does a good job of actually educating the kids.

Now that house would be 450-550k down there though. Housing pricing definitely inflated, but you still get way more down there than up here. Even my little 2000 sq/ft dated home would sell for almost 500k here.
