you can live comfortably on about 3500 per month after taxes if you have a modest house and control your spending but you better have a nestegg set aside before you settle into that situation because there won't be much left over for savings.

Actual statistics show that poverty was higher back then, and cost of living to average income was lower. Interest rates were higher and you had to have a real down payment.Minimum down now is like 3-4% and interest rates are 2-3%. Back then it was like 20% down and 7-10% interest. Also, average home was smaller. Of course they did more younger because they were brought up to be adults by 18. This hyper emotional bullchit and victim mentality wasn't tollerated. Their parents nipped that in the bud real quick.

It's more like the buildings aren't chit:

SD housing:

We only have a few 20-story building for apartments:

Democrats don't like building higher than 2 story structures.

Edit:
I remember I hear back in the day how democrats built public housing buildings, nowadays they only build these tiny 2-story structures:

You can live pretty well in most of the country on $100k and decently in the major cities but you are definitely not going to feel "rich" even at 200k of salary alone.

People focus too much on salary numbers. Salary should be thought of as the capital to make real money through investing that will lead to financial independence and improving your standard of living.

Most people I know making six figures are doctors or they're self employed (affiliate marketing/flipping houses etc). They "gross" 6 figures but never factor in the tax rapings and various other expenses so they only take home a little more than half of that per year.

I make 55k a year plus bonus which I don't really include because they vary so wildly.

But other than being a rentcel I manage fine on that.

Rent in a decent house in a decent area

Decent quality food

Clothes when I need them

Car all paid off

Go out for dinner or do something with friends maybe once a week

But something I want like a video game or something every couple weeks.

After all that I can put away not a huge amount but maybe 250 bucks a week or something. When I get my monthly bonus which can be anywhere between $0-1000 it all goes into savings.

Dont get me wrong I'm not living like a king, and the amount I'm able to save isn't much, but I have a pretty decent lifestyle, I'm hardly living in the ghetto subsisting on top ramen.

I make like 100,000

26 year old male with a mortgage. To be honest, If I just had a normal apartment in a cool part of town to pay for like 1500, and no car, I would be taking exotic vacations all the time.

In reality, I spend a lot on mortgage, and a lot on food and drugs.

Such is life.

Understood and thats a great mindset. IM curious however, are you maxing out all your tax deferred investment accounts? If you did, would you be in the same predicament/mindset if you couldnt have what you have and can do right now? Thats the true mindset of the millionaire next door.

i've survived fine on minimum wage before. was it enjoyable? no. did i have nice things and eat well? no, well I did eat well but that's cause I cooked everything. did I have 3+ roommates? yes

surviving != buying nice clothes, monthly payments for a car you can't afford, living by yourself in a nice area, drinks out every weekend or eating out.

surviving = food, fridge, stove, water, bed, shower, internet, transportation (not necessarily good transportation), phone, low rent

you can survive fine on a low salary/wage... saving on the other hand is quite difficult

Your car is worth more than your salary because you live with your parents. Most of the people live on their own.

I would like to see you try to live on $26k yr if you were a rentcel.

It actually used to be worse. My Father moved out there as a petrochem engineer and made 3x as much while working for the same company and had a house paid for.

US economy just seems to be GOAT so salaries are also GOAT, especially when they don't get taxed to high heaven. Just thank God we are not on the continent paying 60% tax to fund a half a nation of public sector job for life *******s.

$100k = $75k after maxing out tax deferred accounts.
$75k = $56k after federal taxes
If you live in a state with income tax take out more.

Its livable yes.....you just arent balling out of control like a lot of people think when you start to making into the six figures.
I didn't realize how few people actually utilize their 401k till a bunch of dudes at the gym were talking about trying to calculate net worth and savings n shyt and they were all saying they are worth more dead than alive by a long shot (their company gives free life insurance equal to 2x yearly wages or something). I was kinda surprised so I asked if they were factoring in their 401k/retirement accounts and they all kinda laughed and one dude was legit like "yeah I don't contribute much to that one I want to live now not 50 years from now".

I do well, but I would definitely do much better if I was better at budgeting for food and stuff. I have significantly cut back on eating out though because a meal at a fast food spot used to be like 7 or 8 bucks last year and now suddenly its $10 no matter where you go. Like wtf I'll go by a rotisserie chicken for $8 and eat it for 2-3 days

It is mindblowing though the difference between saving $15k+ in 401k and $7k in HSA vs not doing it at all. Obviously $20k is a fair bit of income to just move into an account not touched for 30+ years. Kinda interesting when you think about it that average company will match your 401k savings up to 5%. Then as an American you will hopefully have Social Security to draw from as well. So a lot of us are saving 10% in yearly income in 401k, have SS to draw from, and some people add to additional roth plans.

I max out my 401k and roth so I don't feel guilty spending whatever's left. But I do wish I made a little more so I could save more in a taxable brokerage that's not locked up for 25-30 more years.
