We talking natty? Phucking LOL most guys aren’t even pressing 135, because the OHP is just hard. Only kind of gyms I can think of are powerlifting gyms, where maybe it isn’t impressive.

Yeah probably like 5 years

Maybe I just have different standards of what impresses me I dunno. I've seen dudes hit 5-6 plates in 1-2 years of lifting

I’m with you OP. Fock OHP. No matter what I get light headed, high reps, low reps doesn’t matter. Went full sack of potatoes and twitching on the ground after one particular bad episode. I stick with seated DB press now.

Dumbbells aren't gonna fall on your face, you have them out to the side, you're gonna drop them to your shoulders and then your legs if you fail

Better yet, use a machine, even better

On mobile but I know why. It is because you are locking your knees through the duration. Try bending your knees just slightly and it will help.

I'm with you on they aren't impressive but they are above average lifts. Majority of people at a gym can't OHP 220+ seated let alone standing.

I've pulled 660 and I don't consider that impressive either but to 99% of gym goers that is impressive as fuk

Yeah I'm with you I can see it I guess

Either way, if I could start all over I would have never spent time doing standing press and would have gone with seated from the start and put more emphasis on side/rear delts

"Impressive" is relative to you

Lifts around what you can do will never seem impressive, "if I can do it its not good enough"

Someone that can strict press 315 would say anything over 365 is impressive
Best lifts:
Bench press: 315x5
Squat: 465x1
Strict press: 205x5
Deadlift: 405x13 (conv tap'n'go with straps)

I won't do more than 135 on OHP. I'm too old to be going to snap city on ANY lifts. I've noticed more and more I need to be careful about the amount of weight I put on and how hard I push myself after 4 days in a row at the gym

I don't know why guys convince themseves they have to do any particular lift, if your body doesn't like it, drop it and find an alternative.

I don't OHP anymore, but I get some strange reactions when stretching my neck or doing other overhead work sometimes. Might be an impingement or imbalance cutting of blood supply or something?

Yeah really can be applied to any lift. If your body hates it and it's more trouble than it's worth, just drop it, we aren't pro BBers here we're just doing this for health/fun

I love standing OHP with limited ROM to target delts. Its a nice full body/shoulder pump. Idk if you were standing OP but if so, maybe you were locking out your knees? I know that can make people pass out.

The seated OHP at my gym is sketchy as **** and has the barbell racked behind your head, otherwise I'd do that.

One shoulder exercise im sworn off is dumbell shoulder presses (especially trying to go heavy). Totally ****ed up my rotator cuffs

Yeah not sure why the one guy said with my arm in my avi I would be frauding about my overhead press. My arm in my avi is 17.25 inches which I feel like is pretty decent sized for a natty and my shoulders and traps have always been strong points for me.

At the time I hit 225 for a single in overhead press I was prioritizing the movement, once I switched back to prioritizing bench press my one rep max was 315 for a single. I’ve always been shoulder dominant in my pressing. So it’s fair to say my overhead press was slightly disproportionately stronger than my bench. I haven’t overhead pressed with a barbell in years, haven’t focused on strength in years and I could still walk into my garage and put up 185 for a single rep overhead press.

Im weak AF and only rep 135 to 155 on standing OHP. I can probably do 175 for 1 rep but have never actually tried it. Whoever says 225 standing OHP is not impressive is straight up lying. My buddy can rep 405 on BP and only does 1 rep of 225 OHP standing. I have never seen anyone rep 225 OHP standing, and granted I don’t go to a powerlifting gym, I have seen enough strong guys to know that it ain’t easy, and is sure as heck impressive.

I can sympathize with OP but in a totally different direction

I can't seem to ever bent over row any amount of appreciable weight without feeling like A: I'm gonna launch my L1 thru L5 discs into orbit or B: Passing out from being unable to breathe because of my belt
Maybe just weak core but beltless squats and pulls do not replicate the feeling in any way either

I have just replaced em with chest supported versions

We 225 SOHP aint impressive now??!?

Even taking into consideration that many or even most do not ever attempt a max overhead press, I can only recall a handful of times I've witnessed dudes put more than 225 over their head
Hell I can't say I've seen it that many times on IG or YT and even when I have it's been strongman giants

And you obviously value your deadlift PR as impressive or you wouldn't have included it, and as well you should because it's an impressive lift (unless it was sumo)

I've completely changed my line of thinking recently and think lifting for strength if kind of pointless, just thought it would be a cool pic for an avi, doubt I ever lift that heavy again lol

Hmmmm. It pains me to say that these two points are super valid for me. OHP done with hands as wide as your shoulder (not a wide grip) and elbows out in front - is recommended for shoulder stability by most Physical Therapists.
And also dumbell presses hurt the fcuk out of my rotators.

Cant believe Im agreeing with a GayCumLord....lol

Good reason for it too. Standing OHP is great for power and strength, but as far as deltoid stimulation it's very poor. Mind muscle connection with the three heads of the delts, IMO, is probably the hardest one to perfect. It's easy to let your triceps take over during pressing, or traps taking over for lateral raises, ect.

For me - volume is king for shoulder development. Different angles, different rep schemes.

I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night unless I put this out there.

OHP is fantastic for shoulder development.

There, I said it. This is backed up by studies and personal experience. Not going to try to convince you guys any more than that, because I have nothing to gain by going the extra mile. Believe me or don’t - it makes no difference to me.

If you want to neglect OHP and stick to seated presses and laterals, fine by me. But IMO you’re missing out if you don’t do standing barbell presses. It’s also one of the best trap builders out there and also contributes to lat, ab, upper chest, and tricep long head development.

Btw - you need to do the full range of motion. Please don’t do partial OHP. You’re only shortchanging yourself

OHP with a bar is too much of a pain in the ass for me. I feel like I'm locked into a set plane of motion and it feels unnatural to me. Whereas when I do it with dumbbells it feels way easier and normal.

tightening your trap/neck in that way can restrict bloodflow to your brain, and cause problems.

similar to the effect of tension headaches that women complain about all the time.
