I don't know op. If I was rich I would do some much for my parents...which would def make me happy.

I think the inability to be content and enjoy what you already have is what makes people unhappy.

I have a lot of "things", but those things don't give me pleasure just by owning them. It's what those things allow me to do that is important.

I believe it's the experiences we have that allows us to live a fulfilled life. Experiences with and without loved ones.

My situation in life has allowed me to buy most of what I have for way less than the average person. And the most important part is that with my ATVs, boats, snowmobiles, jet skis, woodworking tools, gym equipment, vehicles, house, cabin, winter camping gear, fishing equipment, etc....I am totally happy with what I have! I worked to achieve the sufficient amount of stuff that will allow me to do the things I want to do, and what I have is perfect! I have no plans to upgrade anything.

I think people are unhappy when they always strive to attain more,just to have it. Start with purpose and meaning and design your life from there. There are thousands of rich kunts sitting unhappy on zillion dollar yachts.

I could live two lifetimes and not use what I have to the fullest!

At this point time to do what I love, with the people I love is most important. That's what I am trying to attain more of.

Same OP. But I realized freedom is what makes you happy.

Despite a super laid back job that I have now, and I make decent money, and I have a positive net worth with mortgage, I still am working towards freedom of work and career. My main goal now is to work for myself / have a business.

The problem with working for a company is not having time off to meet all your obligations.

I have 7 vacation days left, and I have an engagement party, a bachelor party, a wedding, and a trip to Peru all in the next 3 months, and then I’ll be dry the rest of the year. & then I can’t travel / camp / road trip the way I’d want to.

That’s what sucks ab working for a company.

Pretty happy at 110 with zero debt. Investing and saving while also enjoying life without worrying about money is pretty nice. I'd be much less happy if I made half of what I do. Not worried about making more though SRS

What's annoying about the "money doesn't buy happiness" routine is that it's most commonly used by the rich as a verbal whip to subdue the unruly masses who can't feed their children and pay for medicine. Not too many homeless and hungry folks buy the concept that all you need is a positive attitude to calm hunger pain. The expression comes off as a harmless platitude, but it's one of the nastiest dismissals. Once a billionaire said to me, without a hint of self awareness, that there were no food shortages. I nearly died of starvation. And this jackass says this to me. He said, there are food distribution problems, is all. I don't believe a word of it because I know what I suffered. I don't give a damn about semantics. Hunger is real. No kid should be so miserable. Call it "distribution" call it "shortage" or just call it what it is, PAIN.
I suppose if it's just one first world comfortable person speaking to another first world comfortable person, "Hey I thought I'd be miserable without that new sports car but I somehow made it," then I can see how the expression would feel less like boiling oil dumped on my head. But where are these super comfortable first world people? The majority of folks that get this expression shoved down their throats are debating about buying heart medicine or buying oat meal.

I didn't notice any real difference from 55k up to 95k tbh. Hitting 100k is a milestone so that's nice.

Where it really hit for me is when I could consider my family as comfortable. I don't have fuk you money by anyone's stretch of the imagination but going on a weekend trip on a whim is something we can do without heartburn. If any of us need new clothes or stuff, we go out and get them instead of having to wait till the next payday. When we go on vacation we can afford to go do other things in the area instead of just hanging out with family the entire time because the stay is what's budgeted for.

That kinda stuff does make you more happy

If you are broke in a 1st world western capitalist country you will most likely be miserable because of the values of your surroundings and upbringing. I'm sure if you've grown up in such a place where you have been raised with capitalist ideology, you would be judged for your income and you'd feel bad if you had low income. On the other hand, plenty of people around the world are indeed happy and poor. It's more about perspective and your surroundings rather than an absolute value "broke=unhappy". Go to some tropical beach place like south-east Asia or the carribean and you'll see how a person that doesn't even own shoes can be happy.

A 5% increase prolly won’t change your life. Just enough to keep you on their wheel.

Money may not buy happiness directly (although that is debatable), but it eliminates many of the stressors that make people unhappy.

Someone who is unhappy as a result of not having enough money will ABSOLUTELY be happier with more money.

Yes, I can without a doubt say that the Penthouse, Patek and LaF will not amount to the type of happiness that is long lived.
Id rather than have it than have not.....no doubt. But for me the true happiness comes from love from my family and respect from my peers.

Would you not be happier if you didnt have to work at your job (assuming you dont do it for fun) and can move on to more fulfilling things whatever that may be? For me that would be building a youth center for kids back in the hood i grew up in. Always been a goal of mine. Have contacts I have made through the years help with spreading knowledge on things like: finances, arts, trades, business classes, critical thinking, emotional intelligence training, etc. Would be very fulfilling I suspect to be able to expose kids that dont have much to tools and knowledge that they might not be getting elsewhere. Just an example.

True to an extent. But I'd rather be rich and depressed than broke and depressed.

A lot of times what one does to chase the money becomes part of the depression (not all the time)

Being happy is not the point anyways, it's having meaning.

People that say money cannot buy happiness have never truly suffered.


Having a lot of money may not make you happy. But I really don't believe you'll find any cases of broke people that don't have adequate clothing/shelter/food that are happy. Imagine watching your mother, father, siblings, wife or children be cold, or hungry. Being so impoverished you'd literally do anything to be able to feed/cloth your loved ones.


Your measibly 5% raise may not make you happy. But I'm guessing your a single male. In a 1st world country. With adequate food, clothing and housing. Your comfortable. A 50 cent raise on your hourly rate isn't going to make you break out into a joyous dance.

Yeah like having kids. Studies show childless people are happier, maybe cos less stressors, but that's not the point of your life it to be easy and have the least amount of stress.

Hungry and access to delicious food? No problems, no stress.
Bills covered beyond upcoming? No problems, stress.
Helping loved ones, family and friends? No problems no stress.
Medical issues, dentist, GP visits, scans, surgery all covered? No problems no stress.
Want to take a break for a year to do something else, maybe travel or just rot to regain energy? No problems no stress.
Live in an area where you don't have loud degenerates, high crime, have to worry about walking at night etc? No problems no stress.
Want to treat yourself now and then with a nice new gizmo that you can enjoy? No worries no stress.
Looking into economic trends, politics knowing you are safeguarded? No problems no stress.
