Her sweet man does construction work. He has a teaching degree. That's all I really know about his credentials. They treat each other really well.

Perfect opportunity to bring it up. I assume he knows the story of her sister, so a simple, hey baby, remember when we had a short conversation about a pre-nup a long time ago? And you know what my sister is going through. Well, I'm thinking we need to have that conversation too.

I don't know how I would have handled it when I first got married. I don't think I could be driving around in her car though as I like to make my own way.

My business partner makes about 700k, her husband just started at Firestone....yeah - she has a solid prenup lol.

Agree, it depends on what side of the fence you're on. One of our assistants bagged a rich guy and my partner had her lawyer go through the proposed prenup and amend items that were crazy unfavorable to her assistant (but if roles were reversed I doubt she'd have complained about said items). Come to think about it, My wife is at about the same income discrepancy - but no prenup crew (wouldn't have counted anyway because she was with me before I made these duckets - I had only debt pre-marriage)

Survival instincts? lol sloots gonna sloot? IDK what to tell you.
For us it was very simple, assets in our individual names would be individual assets upon a divorce and mutual assets would be split evenly. I don't believe it should be much more complex than this for most individuals and it protects both parties regardless of future happenings and shifts in wealth. It's also just easy as larger value assets such as vehicles and real estate have titles with a name or names on them, so there really isn't much extra action needed throughout our lives.

People assume that prenup means you're not getting anything. But they just have to agree to the set terms.
For example, my gf had offered to pay my daughter's college tuition because she has it, my daughter just started fourth grade. And that's going in the prenup. Splitting any shared assets 50/50, and a moderate payout to me. And we're working on the language for the scenario of getting divorced after I get to "retire" in ten years when her new job begins and a bigger payout for me for interrupting my career path.

In all honesty, we should make prenups mandatory and get rid of the vengeful divorce proceedings.

Like I said, red flag for relationship health. Why wasn’t he the very first person she spoke to about this?

Random people on the internet discussing it, and this guy who she’s supposedly in love and deeply intimate with, has no idea about the conferring behind his back.

I actually agree with this

I think the problem isnt people not protecting their assets, I think the problem is people letting other people become their life partner who they shouldnt have. Maybe people should be smarter at picking who they marry.

As much as a prenuptial agreement of finances makes sense in capitalist America, it really doesnt make sense in believing in the actual virtue of marriage.

I grew up with a divorced mother who got remarried 3 times before I turned 18.
I grew up with a father and step mother who were happily unquestionably married for the whole time and still are.

I learned first hand you pick someone youre ready to spend your whole life, absolutely every single day until death, or dont fukking do it.

Anyway I believe in honoring a marriage, not for moralistic purposes alone but because I think it pays off ultimately getting through huge issues and spending multiple seasons of life with a good person for you. I think people now have not only picked people knowing divorce is a not extremely difficult option, and leave marriages over issues that could have been resolved if people were actually devoted to the marriage concept, and they could have ended up very happy and have a stronger bond. But weak people submit to what society tells them is "unacceptable" and think "okay the whole thing is complete **** now, throw it away".

Going into what people should morally believe is a commitment for LIFE but having a contingency plan already lined up is hypocritical at its essence. Your're not really committed if you're doing that. I would rather get married and have FULL commitment, FULL trust, this person has my back if I kill someone or if I get cancer and lose half my body. If you dont have that then dont get fukking married.

The sex, the conversations, the time you spend together, the longevity of admiring and loving your partner is all enhanced when you fully commit and fully trust someone. The more you keep these little contingencies the more it weakens the actual benefits you get from the relationship, especially after marriage. I didnt realize this until I got engaged but the more you give and let go to the relationship the more you get.

To answer OP, your friend wouldn’t even need to ask if her relationship was stable enough for marriage.

The fact she’s worried this conversation will ruin things tells me she’s really not ready to be married.

what a dumb thread. Men aren't emotionally fragile and low-key greedy succubuses like women are. Just tell him straight out "I was talking to a lawyer about us signing a prenup" and if he cries you know he was a little bitch boy and shouldn't be marrying anyone

have a joined income instead of a single income
have a commitment to work through all problems and not just monkey branch and jet out as any problem arises
build a true 100% trusting committed relationship with another human who thinks your the best human in the world for them
have someone to come home to everyday who makes your life better
have someone who has experienced different periods in your life, like i will enjoy having a wife who was there when i was a cop, who was there when I was a bodybuilder, and who will be there when I go through other stages of life.

Marriage is about setting a standard for you & your spouse; no matter what happens we will stick together. The marriage forces (or should force) the husband & wife to sort out their problems rather than take the easy route and just go their separate ways. There is a social stigma against divorce, more than there is a stigma against two cohabiting couples breaking up. There is a reason for this.

Plus studies have shown children fare much better if their parents are married rather than cohabiting, likely for the reasons I just listed. There is also a sense of family and unity that needs to get passed on to future generations as well. What would a man & woman pass on to their children if the relationship was basically boiled down to sperm donor + surrogate womb donated?

My reaction would be: I would say thanks, I would get my lawyer to go over the agreement, make it as airtight as possible in terms of leave with what you brought in, then casually mention what my asset base is LMAO

Pretty sure you've hit me with the same "life is not a Disney movie" line. I think most of us on here know that, at least to some degree. Most people have been affected by some tragedy/hardship by the time they are 30. I can go along with the idea that really good marriages that last forever, with both partners in love and committed to each other are statistically rare. I would just add that marital risks are not distributed evenly. We've probably all seen people get married where everyone on the outside knew the marriage was doomed from the start. Nothing is guaranteed even under the best circumstances, but I think two high quality people have a good enough chance to make the risks worth it. None of the things listed by Jestbrah are guaranteed by marriage, but I do think marriage greatly improves your chances of achieving them.

As for the OP question. I'm pretty traditional. My wife and I married young and had nothing so the thought of a prenup never crossed our minds. Today, with people marrying older, it's not uncommon for at least one party to have accumulated assets and I think they make sense for a lot of people. If my child was in your friend's position I would definitely advise them to get a prenup. I'm not a nagging parent, I'd mention it once and be done with it.

No idea whether it would hold up this late in the game. If I was her I would just bring it up on a quiet evening with just the two of them, similar to the earlier poster's suggestion of starting with her sister's recent bad divorce.
