But looking at today’s vehicles, one has to wonder if the regulation is still in effect. Although SUVs represent over 50% of vehicles purchased, they are still exempt from the standard, and a quick look at 2021 model SUVs shows many expensive head and tail lamps in unprotected bumpers. Many passenger cars too, while still technically meeting the standard, have grilles that extend from the hood edge to the underside of the car, with no bumper protection; dramatic styling that offers little protection and leads to some expensive parking lot accidents.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in its bumper tests over the years has documented the increasing costs of low-speed bumper impacts, but vehicle manufacturers don’t seem compelled to change. The average new vehicle buyer, who rarely believes they will ever have an accident, doesn’t take notice either until they have a low-speed collision and are shocked at the repair costs, and potential rate increase after filing a claim.

Is there a need for a revised bumper regulation that would offer vehicle owners a lower cost of ownership because of increased protection in low-speed collisions? Carmakers may point to ADAS equipment as the answer, but I look at so many cars and SUVs with large unprotected grilles and wonder if a revised regulation could be the right thing.

Most contracts have clauses to protect the team in the event of legal troubles. Sometimes guarantees are voided if someone gets arrested, fails multiple drug tests, ect. If a player is an elite star they can say "fuk you" and refuse to sign a contract like that, but someone like Ruggs who is young and a middle of the pack player doesn't have that kind of pull.

I imagine he's going to forfeit a lot of that money.

My mate was driving home late one night, fell asleep hit a tree, burst into flames, unfortunately his parents were the fire brigade of the town and first on scene. I still pray for them 15yrs later.

IMO - he wasn't trying to save money on an Uber. he wanted to show off and enjoy his new car. the mentality is - what's the point of having a fancy car if you don't drive it? think about if you owned a Ferrari or Lambo. you'd want to drive it. plus you want to be in "control" - ie not have to wait for a ride and have someone else drive you. i don't condone his decisions - just trying to possibly explain his thought process. this was a terrible mistake that will haunt him for life. if i know i might be drinking - i always Uber. i don't even bring my car keys out with me - i don't want them!

Calling it now, Ruggs will serve a mandatory 2 year prison sentence and jump right back into the league. The Cowboys had a player who fell to the 7th round because of drinking problems, who killed his teammate in a DUI rollover, and still continued to play snaps. Aldon Smith has like 5 felonies related to being a drunk (though they got reduced because pro athlete), and he's still in the league.

DUIs and even murder just aren't a showstopper in the league... the only thing I can think of that is is documented racism.

And even if he gets two years he will be out in time for next season. Typically you serve about 40% of the sentence.

I'd be willing to bet the girls family sues him civilly as well.
