When i was younger I went from really enjoying weed to it giving me 'The Fear' over the course of a couple of years (probably due to personal circs, not weed itself), so i just stopped.

Thank you for this thread.

My son is a heavy marijuana user and it has wreaked havoc on his life. He barely passed high school, bombed out of community college and has gone from job to job. He's had other issues of booze and blow that he kicked but won't put the weed down. His whole world is marijuana.

It actually makes him aggressive, argumentative and temperamental. Lost all his real friends, sitting upstairs in my office with a broken femur from a motorcycle accident (probably baked), I've thrown him out multiple times.

The good news is he's not taking painkillers, the bad news is the weed. He's 250 lb, look like chit, bathes every other day and will be 23 next month. Just lives in this world of weed and video games and can't work for 4 more months.

Currently he's on food stamps and welfare because I don't have him as a dependent. It's sad when you see how his other classmates are doing. This kid had EVRYTHING and now I can't even look at him. The last 6 years have been brutal and sad.

As a weed head myself I will say its tough to quit. Especially as with ur son, all of my friends smoke weed.

But things that help me when I take extended breaks
- Hang out less with friends who smoke(This doesnt mean lose friends. This means be selective on the time you guys hang. If its to sit around and smoke/drink I'll not join those types of events for the months I'm sober.
- Replacement activities are A MUST. Weed fits into a routine. At my worst im smoking in the AM with my coffee > Work > Gym > Home >Smoke+video games> Bang GF > sleep > repeat. I fix this by replacing all my free time where I would normally be smoking. IE: Instead of getting home and playing video games i'll ussually add some outdoor activies. Golf driving range, Outside cardio at a park, Chores in the house, etc....
- NOT BUYING WEEDI know this sounds dumb. But as a pot head I've failed so many attempts to "SLOW DOWN" when there's weed available. When I want to slow down/ not do it I'll not buy and If I do it'll be enough for 1 session.

It's very similar to a fat person who wants to lose weight. It has to be on ur mind most of the day for months at a time and something you are working hard towards. Because before you hit that first "goal" its nothing but hard work to avoid smoking when its part of ur daily life/routine. Just like it is for a fat person to not over eat.
Are you not entertained?

Ok. Right off the bat I can see you are blaming marijuana heavily for this.

You are saying your kid had everything.

You comparing him to his peers.

My parents said the same, but they literally had no clue.

Your son has much deeper issues than weed. Weed may not be helping, but it surely isn't the cause of his downfall.

It is. But in the same sense that anxiety or depression are. DP/DR can be overcome, personally I no longer struggle with it, but it is something that has impacted the lives of many people and is becoming more well documented.

Until 10-15 years ago most of the medical community had no clue what it even was. Patients would get prescribed psychiatric drugs which only worsened symptoms. Jeff Abugel has some tremendous work in bringing awareness to the condition. Additionally, the rates of self-reported depersonalization have skyrocketed in the same time frame. My suspicion is that MJ has become so potent it now mimics hallucinogenics. Not a good trend for society.

Believe me I know. Marijuana has completely exacerbated the situation. He's coping with something, won't do therapy.

Was in sorta OP's sons place at one point, sorta.

Basically been smoking since 15, many breaks in there but on average smoked a ton. I kept it to an "after responsibilities" activity from 15 to 25, kept up my grades, got into a good major at a good school, graduated, found a good career, ect. All while smoking a ton of weed. At first, the only way I knew my parents would be cool with it was if I had good grades and a job and what not. They gave me chit for it but at the very least I was a functioning person. As I got older and became more successful than them, they really stopped caring and realized that they may not have liked it but I'm making it work. I did it mostly because I can be a pretty high strung/always thinking kinda person and the weed just knocks me back to let me relax for a bit. My smoking buds and normal friends weren't always the same group either so I had a variety of "experiences" and never fell into the "stoner culture". Even at 18, I realized that a "quick hit" turned into a 3 year long smokefest. It opened my eyes up to see how much of an addictive personality I had, I avoided coke and pain pills like the plague, I knew what was in store for me if I ever did that.

25 to 30 is when I started to seriously smoke a ton of weed. Went from 1/8oz or 1/4oz a week to 1/8 minimum a day, more like 1/4 a day. Covid really ramped it up, drastically. I straight up stopped getting high, like I could face a blunt and I would be "high" but the urge to wanting to smoke never really went away. These were bad/wasteful years, I would smoke at all hours, I was a smoking machine (so was my wife and all my friends). To be honest I took a good look at myself at one point and decided that the path I was on was extremely destructive, something had to change. There was(is) more to life than smoking weed and I felt dumb that I was wasting time now and potentially robbing myself of future time (health).

A big source of my issue is the way I was smoking, which was almost exclusively throughblunts. I found myself not wanting to smoke weed but rather smoke a blunt. My life became all about how I can smoke a blunt. The nicotine has been ahold of me for 15 years now, it was a hard one to break but I am a month free and my weed usage is wayyyy down. I find myself able to control my urges better and even go without smoking some nights. For the first 2 weeks, I was fiending blunts. Now, I am fine and realize that nicotine + routine is a pretty nasty combo. For now, I will taper to see where my weed usage is at and go from there. I enjoy edibles these days and "cleaner" ways of smoking. However at the end of the day, you are still inhaling burning plant matter, it isnt good for you. Next step is to take a much needed tolerance break.

I know multiple people that smoked weed daily for many years that has quit, some has gone cold turkey others still do it a few times a year.

They say it's not addictive, but when you do it daily for over 10 years then it's clear that there is addictive elements to the behavior. However quitting is not a huge thing like opioids, alcohol or benzos.

Perhaps some melatonin to help with the sleep the first week. A hobby and a job will help...
Yeah the nicotine+routine is what really fuc'ed up my feedback loop.

Just so you know, if he actually has severe ADHD, the weed can actually be the only thing that is calming him down.

I'm glad you mentioned the coping. That right there is the other reason young folk get hooked on weed, besides just a social circle, or being bored.

Maybe he feels like he will never amount to anything, in a state of hopelessness? That's pretty common now days, unfortunately.

Without a good supportive environment, (you?), he might never get better and just worse.

Communication with the intent to learn and help is key.

Just be grateful he's not doing other drugs. There are families visiting hospitals hoping their son's ok from ODing on heroin.
