Promotions at this place are based on time in seat up till about year 10, and then they get very, very political afterwards. There is only one promotion track, and everyone wants to find their way up it. But in year 3, I'm not sweating that yet.

Missing a chance to skillmax jump ship is absolutely a fair point, and one I've been thinking more about as my org hired a sister shadow team in Bangalore, to "provide around the clock debug support." EZ to see where that will end up in a year or two.

All of it honestly feels very Soviet. If I show up and do the bare minimum, I get food on the table and a Khruschkyova to live in. If I go and bust my ass, I get the same thing. In fukkin Cuba, Castro and Che started handing out "good job!" letters to hard workers in lieu of extra pay, and they wondered why everyone was so fukkin lazy.

What prompted this thread... I did a brief interview at a prestigious firm today. Not sure if I'm gonna make it in brahs, but we shall see

Thank you.. JFC. Self care is the most important thing in the world by far. Obviously you need to make money for essentials but past that if it cuts into self care and you're always coming home exhausted and stressed, what's even the point of living?

The rise and grind mentality is cringe. Nobody cares about your achievements now and they won't care when you're dead. And when you're dying, neither will you.

Best path i think is to have a decent paying career that you might not love, while using some of that money to build a sustainable side hustle on the side debt free. Use the slave drivers money to build your freedom. That's what ive done. People who start a business from the ground up using debt are gamblers. I don't like gambling, although sometimes it pays off. I prefer the slow and steady approach. Everyones needs are different. I want enough FU money and a side business incase i do tell the boss to fuk off. Some would rather just wage slave which is fine too. I hate the feeling of being owned, so i've always stayed away from chit like car payments, credit card debt, etc. If you stay out of debt you can get away with alot more job wise (i.e. lower paying gigs) than your average dude with a nagging wife, 4 kids, and a mcmansion in "settlers trace" subdivision.

My thoughts are career matters but it is not everything. It does impact your income and can impact your emotions and feelings of fulfillment but there is more to life. Having people you care about and that care about you matters, no matter your career. The career may impact how much you have to do thing, or to what level of 'doing things' you are not defined by it.

Career is not everything, but being financially stable is. But the most important thing is having balance in your life.

I'm in the top 1% income on the misc, but I probably also work the most here and so pretty miserable
