Chit, I even have a policy whereby if I feel I am about to make a rash decision or do something I might regret, I tell myself to delay the decision for 24 hours (and get a night’s sleep under my belt) and if I still feel the same way in 24 hours then I’m allowed to go ahead and do it. As you can probably guess I often ‘cool off’ and don’t think it’s such a good idea 24 hours later.

Having said all of that, I have made one or two spur of the moment emotionally charged decisions that were definitely the right fukin’ thing to do, and had I not acted on the emotion, in that moment, I probably wouldn’t have made the decision.

And more broadly I think the point I am trying to make is that emotion exists to get you to take action. Like, that’s what it’s there for. It drives you. I think the idea of not acting on it is something of a delusional stoic male fantasy.

My .02 cents.
oh I have absolutely acted on emotion inappropriately before and can’t say for sure I never will again. My personal inability to perfectly adhere to the ideas I subscribe to does not devalue those ideas at all. Just tells me I need more practice and need to pay attention closer, so I work on it.

I agree we can let it out at times as it can be a strategic tool. That is what I was getting at with the caged ego idea in my first post. Keep it inside, but if it can be the best tool for the job, let that chit out.

The main point is the the behavior is consistently aligned with the intended goal you are trying to achieve.

That is what I always try to keep in mind.

1. Where am I?
2. Where do I want to be?
3. How do I get from where I am to where I want to be?

and the most important….

what am I doing right now, and is it helping me achieve my goals, preventing me from achieving them, neither helping nor hurting? Is the lack of progress a necessary sacrifice for another purpose?

For example, there are situations that could exist where a possible consequence of my behavior would be me going to jail and having a record forever, and that still be the best course of action based on the situation. In that moment we may not feel like doing it for whatever reason, but if it aligns with our intended end state, it is rational behavior.

And at other times, trying to communicate an important message to a loved one who has checked out, the need to stress the **** out the most important thing you have tried to talk about in a long time, well then….show them you care. Let go. Be as open and honest as you ****ing can. Every word you have ever thought up until that point, lay it the **** out. Ensure they know they are not under attack and ask they please consider the possibility there could be some legitimacy to your perspective but beyond that, unleash. Make that **** hurt. Handle your business.

I didn't say they were. I said one is 'more' valuable than the other one. As mentioned, it's subjective when we use terms like "poor". That means different things to different people.

Take for example a guy making $300K/year. By most standards he is in the top 1% of income earners. But after his range rover payment, 5k sq ft house mortgage, pool/jacuzzi maintenance, quarterly international trips, $5K bespoke suits, etc... he actually burns more than he makes each year and is in debt.

That's not high value. He's a fragile man and is one stroke of bad luck away from living on the street.
